The Fate of an Unborn Child Once I took a look at the gym, the communal showers, the piles of white towels, and the banged-up lockers, I knew I wasn’t going to go anywhere near it. We were given the option of taking a musical instrument in lieu of P.E., except St. Sebastian’s only offered instruction in the accordion. What the hell! I signed up. And so did two guys named O’Riley and Carlin. I liked O’Riley almost immediately. We were in the same homeroom and he seemed to be a polite and cheerful fellow, a little older than I was, maybe by six months. He was overweight but wore his clothes well. Not sure how he hid the fat, but he said his mother bought him special clothes, called huskies. In any case, his black corduroy pants, white shirt, and black sweater concealed most of his chubbine
