Chapter One: The New Boy

320 Words
The morning sun cast a golden glow over the gates of Marcecue High School. Students streamed into the compound in clusters — chatting, laughing, and dreading the morning assembly. But all heads turned when a new face walked through the gate. Max. He wore his confidence like a badge. With messy hair, earphones hanging from his collar, and a half-buttoned shirt that broke school dress code rules, he didn’t care — and somehow, that made him stand out even more. “Who’s that?” Hazel asked, peeking over her sunglasses as she leaned against the wall beside Isabella. “I heard he transferred from Lakeside High,” Isabella replied, adjusting her books. “He got into some trouble there.” Hazel’s lips curled into a playful smirk. “Trouble’s my favorite subject.” The principal’s voice boomed through the speakers, calling for the morning assembly. Max barely flinched. Instead, he made his way toward a quiet corner of the school, where five boys were gathered under a tree — laughing, cracking jokes, and tossing a football between them. They noticed him first. The leader, tall and lanky with dreadlocks, stepped forward. “You new?” “Yeah,” Max replied coolly. “Max.” “Nice. I’m Dele. This is Sam, Victor, Kingsley, and Jay. You play ball?” “Every day,” Max said with a grin. “And I don’t lose.” That was all it took. Within minutes, Max was part of their crew — joking like they’d been friends for years. But beneath the easy smiles and playful jabs, something stirred in him. He’d changed schools, left behind mistakes, and now he wanted more than just fun. He wanted respect. He wanted a fresh start. But as fate would have it, that fresh start would involve more than school and sports. It would include Hazel’s curiosity, Isabella’s quiet interest… and a bet that could change everything.
