The First Threat

Chapter 2 — The First Threat Ariana couldn’t sleep. The city lights outside her small apartment painted long streaks across the room, but the shadows felt too alive tonight. Her encounter with Luca Moretti the night before had left her restless, her mind replaying his sharp eyes, his calm, commanding voice, and the overwhelming feeling of being both protected and exposed at the same time. The thought of stepping into the Moretti world terrified her—and thrilled her in ways she didn’t understand. She tried to focus on her schoolwork, the piles of notes on her desk, but her heart wasn’t in it. Every sound outside made her jump. A sharp knock at the door made her freeze. “Who is it?” she whispered, heart pounding. “Delivery,” came a voice she didn’t recognize. Ariana hesitated, the envelope in her hands already forming in her imagination as danger. She opened the door slowly, but the delivery man was gone. On the floor was a single black envelope, sealed with red wax. No return address. No indication of who had left it. Her hands trembled as she broke the seal. Inside was a single card with elegant, sharp handwriting: “Stay away from the Morettis… or the consequences will find you.” A shiver ran down her spine. Her instincts screamed at her to run, to hide, to ignore it. But she knew better. This was no ordinary threat. The first knock at her door had been too precise. The envelope too deliberate. Someone was watching her. She called Luca’s number immediately, hands shaking. It rang twice before he picked up. “Ariana,” he said, voice low, calm—but the edge in it made her pulse quicken. “Are you alone?” “Yes,” she said, forcing her voice to stay steady. “Someone… left a note. It says—” She didn’t even finish reading. He was already moving. She could hear the swift, controlled rhythm of his footsteps in the background. “I’m coming. Stay inside. Lock the door. Don’t answer anyone.” Within minutes, there was a soft, practiced knock on her window. She jumped, but before she could react, the window slid open silently. Luca stepped inside, the rain from outside still clinging to his dark hair. “You didn’t wait,” she said, a mix of relief and exasperation in her voice. “Neither did danger,” he replied, eyes scanning the room. She handed him the envelope. He read it carefully, the calmness in his face hiding the storm of calculation behind his eyes. “They know you’re connected to me,” he said quietly. “This is a warning.” Ariana’s heart raced. “A warning? They could actually—” “They could,” Luca interrupted, stepping closer. His presence made her both nervous and oddly safe. “But I won’t let them.” The words were simple, but the weight behind them made her chest tighten. She wanted to protest, to argue, but she could feel the absolute certainty in his tone. It wasn’t a suggestion. It was a promise. He took out his phone and called someone, speaking in low, deliberate words that made Ariana’s stomach twist. She didn’t understand most of it, but she could tell the people on the other end knew him—and feared him. After a few minutes, he ended the call and turned back to her. “I need you to come with me. Now.” “Where?” she asked, heart thundering. “Somewhere safe. Somewhere they won’t find you.” Her instincts screamed to resist, but the fear in her chest overpowered hesitation. She grabbed her bag, shoving in essentials, and followed him to the door. Outside, the city seemed quiet, almost too quiet. Luca led her to a sleek black car, the kind she’d only ever seen in movies. He opened the passenger door for her with a firm but gentle hand. Inside, the warmth of the car felt like a shield from the night. Luca started the engine without another word and drove through the city with precision, taking alleys and backstreets Ariana didn’t even know existed. “Who are you?” she asked, trying to keep her voice calm despite the panic rising in her chest. “My name is Luca Moretti,” he said. “And you’re about to enter a world you weren’t meant to see.” She swallowed hard. “Why me? Why now?” He didn’t answer immediately. The silence was heavy, charged with meaning. Then he said, “Because you’re alive. And some people want to see you… not be alive.” The words hit her like a physical blow. She clutched her bag tighter. “I don’t even know what I’ve done,” she said, panic creeping in. “You’ve been seen,” Luca replied. “Seen by the wrong people. And now, you’ve become a target.” Ariana’s mind raced. She had been careful. She had kept her life quiet. She had no enemies. But the way Luca spoke… she realized she had walked into a world far larger—and more dangerous—than she had ever imagined. The car stopped at a nondescript building. There were no signs. No lights. But the security was immediate and invisible. Luca stepped out first, scanning the surroundings before gesturing for her to follow. Inside, the air was warm and smelled faintly of leather and cologne. Men in sharp suits nodded respectfully as Luca passed. Ariana felt small, out of place, yet strangely shielded by the aura that followed him. “Where are we?” she asked softly. “Safe for now,” Luca said. “But not for long. I have to make some arrangements. You need to stay here until I know the threat is gone.” Her stomach twisted. Stay here? Alone? “You won’t be alone,” he corrected, his voice softening ever so slightly. “I’ll check on you regularly. And if anything happens…” He didn’t finish, but she knew what he meant. The weight of his gaze made her heart thud. He wasn’t just talking about protection. He was promising it. She nodded, unable to speak. Luca handed her a phone. “Keep this with you. Call me if anything happens. And Ariana… trust me.” She took it, fingers brushing against his hand. The warmth lingered longer than it should have, making her chest tighten. “Why do I trust you?” she whispered, almost to herself. “Because I won’t fail you,” he replied. The words left no room for doubt. Ariana didn’t argue. She only hoped he was right. Hours passed slowly. Ariana paced the small room, her mind in overdrive. Every creak of the floorboards, every shadow along the wall made her heart race. And then, just as she was starting to calm, the phone rang. It was Luca. “Stay calm,” his voice said, low and urgent. “There’s been movement outside. Do not open the door. Do not make a sound.” Her chest tightened. “What do I do?” “Lock the door. Hide if you can. I’m coming.” Within minutes, the soft click of the door signaled his arrival. He moved with perfect silence, positioning himself between her and the entrance. “You’re safe,” he said, voice low. “For now. But we have to find who sent the message.” Ariana nodded, unable to speak. Her trust in him—though terrifying—was absolute. Luca glanced at her, a rare softness in his eyes. “I’ll make sure you’re never harmed. You’re important. More than you know.” She didn’t respond immediately, but her heart spoke anyway. And in that moment, Ariana realized something she hadn’t admitted before: she had begun to care… perhaps dangerously so. The night stretched on. Outside, the city was dark, dangerous, and unpredictable. But inside, Luca kept watch, a silent guardian against shadows that threatened to consume her. And Ariana, though terrified, felt a strange sense of security. For the first time, she didn’t feel completely alone. But danger was waiting. And she knew it was only a matter of time before it would strike again.
