Chapter 4 — Secrets in the Dark
The safe house was quiet, almost eerily so. Ariana sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers tracing the lines of her notebook, trying to write down anything that could keep her mind from racing. But no matter how hard she focused, her thoughts kept returning to Luca Moretti—the way he had appeared out of nowhere, his calm control, the fire in his eyes that both terrified and fascinated her.
The sound of a key turning in the door made her heart leap.
“Stay where you are,” Luca said, stepping inside. His eyes scanned the room before finally resting on her. “It’s secure. For now.”
Ariana exhaled, relieved. “I—thank you,” she said quietly.
He moved closer, the warmth of his presence filling the room. “You need to understand the world you’ve been pulled into. The people who want to harm you—they aren’t ordinary criminals. They are organized, patient, and deadly.”
“I don’t understand,” Ariana whispered. “Why me? I’ve done nothing.”
“You’re connected to me,” Luca said, his voice low but steady. “And anyone connected to me becomes a target. I’ve tried to shield you, but some dangers are relentless. They follow, they wait, and they test.”
Ariana felt a chill run down her spine. She had never imagined that someone could be so powerful, so dangerous, yet so deeply focused on protecting her.
“Tell me,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “Tell me everything. I need to know what I’m facing.”
Luca nodded, moving to a chair across from her. “The Moretti family is one of the oldest in the city. We’ve been involved in many things—business, politics, certain… operations that others can’t touch. Our enemies are numerous, and they’re clever. They’ll use anyone close to me to send a message. That includes you.”
Ariana’s hands tightened in her lap. “So I’m… a pawn?”
“No,” Luca corrected immediately. “You’re not a pawn. You’re someone I need to keep alive. But yes, they want to use you against me. They think they can manipulate me by threatening you.”
The weight of his words pressed on her chest. She realized, with a mix of fear and awe, that the danger surrounding her was far bigger than she could have imagined.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” she whispered.
“You don’t have to do it alone,” Luca said, standing and moving closer. “I will not let them touch you. Not now, not ever. You have my word.”
Ariana looked up, meeting his eyes. There was a fierce determination in them that made her heart beat faster. She couldn’t explain why, but she felt a strange, almost overwhelming need to trust him.
“I… trust you,” she said softly.
Luca’s jaw tightened slightly, and for a moment, his usually controlled demeanor faltered. He didn’t smile, but the faint softening of his eyes was enough for her to notice. “Good. Because trusting me is the first step in surviving this world.”
There was a brief pause, the only sound the soft hum of the safe house’s heater. Then Luca pulled a small folder from his jacket. “I want you to see something. These are… incidents. People who underestimated the Morettis or crossed us in some way. It’s important that you understand what’s at stake.”
Ariana opened the folder carefully. Photographs, reports, and messages detailed the intricate network of threats and rivals. She realized how deep Luca’s world ran, and how carefully he navigated it.
“Everything here…” she murmured. “It’s so much more than I imagined.”
“It’s a dangerous life,” Luca said. “And it’s not a life you chose. But you’re now part of it. And I will not let you be harmed.”
Ariana looked at him, feeling a mixture of fear and admiration. She didn’t know how to reconcile her feelings for him—the attraction, the trust, the deepening connection—with the reality of the danger she faced.
Suddenly, Luca’s phone buzzed. He glanced at it, eyes narrowing. “Movement near your apartment,” he said. “They’re testing you. Seeing how I respond.”
Ariana’s chest tightened. “They followed me here?”
“No,” Luca replied. “But they’re clever. They’ve probably been watching for days, studying patterns. That’s why I needed to move you. That’s why you’re here now. Safe… for now.”
The words “for now” made Ariana shiver. She realized that even with Luca’s protection, the world she had entered was unpredictable and dangerous.
Luca stepped closer. “You need to rest,” he said. “You can’t be on edge all the time. Fatigue makes mistakes. Mistakes make danger inevitable.”
“I can’t rest,” Ariana admitted. “Not with all of this happening.”
“I know,” Luca said softly. His eyes held hers, unwavering. “But I’ll stay until you can. Until you feel secure.”
A moment of silence passed, heavy and charged. Ariana felt her heart race at the proximity, at the intensity of his gaze. She wanted to say something, but the words stuck in her throat.
Then Luca broke the tension. “I need to go check the perimeter. Stay here. Lock every door. Don’t answer if someone comes. Understood?”
Ariana nodded, though a small part of her panicked at the thought of being alone again.
He gave her a brief, reassuring nod before leaving, and she was left in the quiet apartment, alone but protected. She realized with a jolt that she didn’t want to be alone, not really. She wanted him there, always, even though she barely understood the intensity of her feelings.
Hours passed slowly. Ariana paced the room, the fear of the unknown gnawing at her. And then, as if sensing her thoughts, Luca returned. He moved silently, checking the locks, the windows, and finally sitting across from her.
“You’re safe,” he said simply. “For now.”
The words should have comforted her, but instead, they made her heart ache. Safe… but only because he was here. And the thought of losing that protection was unbearable.
Ariana swallowed. “Luca… I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he reached over and adjusted a loose strand of hair from her face, his fingers brushing her cheek lightly. It was a fleeting, almost imperceptible touch—but it sent a shiver down her spine.
“You won’t have to find out,” he said finally, voice low and steady. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”
The intensity in his gaze, the certainty in his words, made her chest tighten. She felt something stirring—something she couldn’t name, but it wasn’t fear. It was… something else. Something dangerous and thrilling.
And for the first time, Ariana realized that being close to Luca Moretti wasn’t just about survival. It was about trust, about connection, about feeling something she had never felt before.
The night stretched on. Outside, the city was dark, quiet, and full of hidden threats. But inside the safe house, Ariana felt a fragile sense of security. She knew the danger was far from over, but she also knew one undeniable truth: she wasn’t facing it alone.
Luca Moretti was there. And for reasons she didn’t yet fully understand, she was beginning to hope that he always would be.
