The day at the hairdresser with Gabrielle was surprisingly enjoyable. For a few hours, the chatter and laughter provided a welcome distraction from the pain gnawing at Sophia’s heart. She glanced at her phone countless times, hoping for a message that never came. Not that she truly expected one, but she’d grown accustomed to his presence, and the silence felt louder than expected.
By the time they got home after lunchtime, Gabrielle was ravenous… she hadn't eaten for hours, and the hunger was evident in her cranky demeanor.
