Axels POV
I was trying to concentrate on the work before me, we were working on a contract to buy out multiple large chain hotels, but my phone kept going off and I had the feeling of someone trying to push through a mind link. I hit the button on my phone to silence all notifications and and continued I was about 3 minutes from being done and submitting the information I was working on to the lawyers, just give me ten minutes guys I kept thinking. As I hit the send button my mom came bursting in the the door. "Jules called Daphne, Bexleigh got hurt at work, she is in surgery we have to go now!"
My stomach instantly got sick I wanted to vomit. I couldn't even figure out what to do with my limbs, what the hell happened? "Axel baby, I can't carry you out of here, we have to go, MOVE," mom yelled. I guess the Luna voice made me listen because I was able to move my legs again. I followed mom to the front door where Jack met us with a car. She was almost done with work only had two hours left she messaged me an hour ago telling me she couldn't wait to see me tonight and tell me about her phone interview she had on her lunch. "What happened to her Jack," my mom asked.
"I don't really know Jules was vague with mom all she said was a patient assaulted her."
It felt like it took a month to get to the hospital when we got there Jack dropped me and mom off at the door where I seen Bexleighs Dad, Jules and Hannah sitting. Jules had her legs crossed holding Andrew close to her and rubbing his back. Hannah had her knees pulled to her chest staring into space. Everyone looked like they had been crying. I walked up to Hannah and grabbed her hand she gave a solemn nod and put her head back on her knees. Everyone was feeling the hurt of not knowing if Bex was okay, my wolf was whining, my mom was crying but trying to hide it from everyone else, as a Luna would she hadn't sat down offering to get everyone snacks and drinks and holding hands. I just sat there wondering what will happen if I lose this girl.
The minutes turned in to hours and we all sat there with no update from the doctors. Hannah had fallen asleep with her head in Jules lap and her feet on my moms. Andrew sat there with head between his hands rocking his dirty work boots back and forth on the ground. My wolf was pacing in my head whining, it was staring to give me a head ache, so I decided I would go for a walk. I linked Jack to let me know if there was any update or if the doctor shows up and stood up, I walked over to Andrew and grabbed his shoulder, "You want to walk?" He nodded his head yes and we headed toward the doors. We walked around the hospital with our hands in our pockets in silence, we didn't need to say anything we were feeling the same things.
When we got half way around the building Anderson started talking. "When she was born she was so small, Braxtyn had two pounds and some odd ounces on her. She was like 4 pounds. The doctors were concerned but she kept ripping all the wires off she wasn't interested. So stubborn. Her mom, Lindsey kept saying hold her she needs her daddy. I didn't until like the third or fourth day home Linds was fighting with Braxtyn trying to get him fed and she was fussing and crying I picked her up and she was fine. I remember, I just kept looking at her wondering how someone like me made this perfect beautiful little girl."
We continued on our walk. Silence again, I couldn't help but wonder if I would get the opportunity to have a little tiny girl of my own. "I'm going to marry her, sir."
"I expect you will."
"Maybe not soon but with your permission I would like to make her mine. I love her."
"I know that son. And I know she's going to be okay and you should as soon as she agrees you deserve each other."
When we finally walked back in the waiting room a surgeon was walking through the doors also. "Mr and Mrs. Armstrong would you please come with me?"
Andrew stood up and walked over but Jules hadn't moved, "sir this is her soon to be husband, I think he should go in my place."
"Very well, Mr..." He said waiting for me to day my name.
"Ross, Axel Ross," I answered. And we followed him back a hall and into a room with Bexleigh in it I ran up to her to make sure she was still breathing. Her head was wrapped in a bandage and the whole right side of her face was bruised. Bexleighs dad made a face and his eyes for the first time all night welled up with tears enough that they started falling down his cheek. She had about 15 different lines coming from her body. "What happened," I said my voice cracking.
"Well Bexleigh was attacked by a patient on drugs, who wanted more drugs, according to peers he slammed her head off the wall quite a few times and punched her in the side of the head quite a few times, she had a brain bleed and had to undergo quite a few hours of surgery, as of now there is no brain swelling but she is at risk. High risk. As far as our tests go her pupils are equal and reactive, meaning they are showing no signs of obvious trauma, and her reflexes are still in tact which is a risk for any head, brain or neck surgery, her blood work came back she was a little anemic, which isn't a huge issue, but we do have her hooked up to iron," he said pointing to a bag full of brown/orange looking junk. "She needs rest, but feel free to visit until visiting hours are over."
"The patient who did this," I said stumbling over my words, "He is where?"
"He will be in police custody, until he is well enough to go to jail, assaulting a nurse in this state is a felony. If proper legal measures are taken he can spend quite a few years in jail. Might I add I know Bexleigh quite well, she has been a substitute in my OR and I have worked beside her since she came on, she is a wonderful young lady. We will take the best care we can of her. Every staff memeber here loves her, she is in wonderful hands."
I gave her a kiss on her mostly unscathed, side of the face, my poor girl. Her dad waked over and grabbed her hand and stroked it lightly. "I will go bring Jules back," I said. and walked out the door. I went the long way around though I continued walking to the end of the hall where there were two police officers standing, I smelled it about halfway there, rogue. It wasn't unusual for rogues to run around with humans and maintain jobs, or benefit from the things humans offered that weren't common in a pack. A weird fact also is that very rarely do werewolves get addicted or effected by drugs of any sort it takes a certain kind of manufactured by werewolves medicine to even knock one out for medical procedures, we metabolized it so quickly it didn't have the desired human effect.
I linked Jack the room number and asked nurse nearby to direct me toward the waiting room so I didn't look suspicious. When I got back I told Hannah and Jules the room number so they could go see Bex and sat with Jack, I explained my theory that this wasn't merely a freak accident and told him to do whatever he needed to do to figure out who that person was who attacked my Luna. I wouldn't rest until we got the information I needed.
After a little while Andrew, Jules, and Hannah went home and me and mom and Jack went back to Bexleighs room, Jack however diverted down the hall to the attackers room. Mom went to one side of Bexleigh and I went to the other. Mom gently fluffed igloos untangled leads and brushed a few pieces of hair out of her face. I wasn't sure what to do so I just sat down and held her hand. Mom talked to her telling her not to worry she still looks beautiful, how lucky she is to have a daughter in law as beautiful and sweet as she is and that she needed to come back as soon as possible because she wanted to know everything about her. Then we got kicked out and had to go home until visitation at 9 tomorrow the doctor said he couldn't call me but he would update Andrew or Jules as they were her emergency contacts.
When me and mom got home I headed into my office and started doing research of drugs and werewolves that would at least keep me busy until Jack got back and hopefully he would have more info on what we were dealing with. Bex didn't know about this world until I brought her into it so everything that happened was in direct correlation to me, I'd take the time to feel guilty about that later. This pack currently had no enemies, honestly the last meeting me and the 5 other Alphas had no one was having issues, and that meeting didn't take place too long ago.
I heard a small knock on the door and it cracked open as Annsley walked in. "Mom told me what's going on with Bex, how are you holding up?"
"Fine, just trying to figure out a few things about Wolves and drugs."
"There is no way."
"What?"
"We just went over this, me and a few other girls from school, the humans can all get drunk and high and we would be fine, there are sedatives that would work, but nothing we could get at a human hospital. That's relatively common knowledge too, like even if there was a wolf who was an avid drug user they couldn't even get held over by a human drug. Also mom said she heard the patient was shot in the leg, not from a super reliable source but if that's true the wound would heal in about a day or two depending the severity, either way it wouldn't take that long to heal."
If what Annsley heard was true this patient would be transfered by this time tomorrow. We could post his bail and question him and have the DA throw out the case and take care if it our way, that wouldn't legally take care of Bexleigh, but it would longterm make the problem disappear. She didn't need taken care of monetarily by anyone me and my family had more than enough to take care of her. I linked Jack Just keep an eye on his status until he goes to jail, we can figure the rest out.
Jack linked back, I have a name and his cell phone boss, we will have more info by morning. He always had my back. I could always count on this man.
"What did Jack say?"
"He said he got the phone and name of the guy who did this to Bex."
"Who is he?"
"Me and Jack will talk about it when he gets back."
I headed back to my room I was going to shower and change into something more comfortable then the formal work attire I had on. My mind kept going back to Bexleigh, I don't know what I am going to do if she is not okay, the outcome seemed positive but I had a hard time not thinking the worst. I was going to marry her as soon as possible and I don't care about the animals and her house we will figure it out, I need her close to me. I would build a barn in the backyard if that would keep her close to me.
I opened the door and I seen Trina sprawled out across my bed a black lingerie set and a pair of high heels. "I was wondering when you would come home baby, I missed you," she said presumably trying to be seductive.
"You need to leave Trina, I don't have time for this," I said with an eye roll
She stood up and sashayed over to me and placed her hands on my chest and placed her body flush against mine. "I won't take no for an answer, I am MEANT to be this packs Luna and I am going to make that happen. This pack deserves more than a human for a Luna," I was getting more irritated by the second, she would not be a Luna in anyone's pack her families social and genetic stature ended with her. "Come on Axel how easy would it be to wipe the human off the planet, an accident or something."
She immediately struck a nerve, this girl had no idea what she was messing with tonight, the state I was in. "Need to know information but she won't be a human long, we will be turning her into a werewolf as soon as possible."
Trina scoffed, "What about your heirs bloodlines? You would mess up your families purebred reputation, for her?"
"I would and so would anyone else. Trina I was nice, but I have no need for you Bexleigh is it for me. You need to stop with me and go find your own mate. If he'll have you once he realizes how crazy and power hungry you are."
"I ALREADY REJECTED HIM! He was too weak for me ranked too low, and I will get you. You will see you want me Axel. You're mine, you will be mine and you will never be with her, or anyone else."
"Trina you need to leave," my wolf was starting to bubble to the surface my hands were starting to shake. "You need to leave before you leave in a body bag, you WILL NOT ever be my mate. Bexleigh is it and I will kill for her. I will kill you for her," my Alpha voice was making her submit, but only slowly she was fighting it the best she could. But she slowly turned around grabbed her robe and walked out. I was still on the verge of shifting and Blaze was bouncing around in my head, if I had worse control she would be dead.
I didn't even want to shower at this point so I just changed into sweats and cracked a window so Trinas arousal smell seeped out. She was a monster.
After about a half hour Jack met me in my office with a bunch if papers a phone and a few random pictures. He displayed all the information on my desk and started explaining this Derek Davis to me. He was hired by someone with a disposable phone, him and 4 other rogues were hired to beat Bexleigh hopefully to death. I shuttered at that thought. Not my girl, the more in detail he got about this guy the more I wanted to vomit. In the text messages they were sending back and forth they talked about how once they beat her unconscious they could sneak her out and use her as a weak little human toy. I wanted to kill him. The papers Jack brought in explained he was in his mid-thirties and him and these four other men got banned from the pack around the same time, we assumed for the same reason but we would have to find this animals old pack. I would get justice for Bexleigh.
The 4 in the morning vibes hit us fast and our answers to things started making less sense. We decided it would be a good idea to stop looking at the papers Jack brought and crash out Jack would keep looking into it and hopefully by this time tomorrow Bexleigh would atleast be awake, I just needed to hear her voice. I also made my decision the moment Bexleigh was well enough we would change her. She was right a hard enough bop on the head might just kill her. If she was a werewolf she would have been strong enough to stand a chance and not just be an unsuspecting punching bag. Somewhere in the midst of my thoughts I dosed off because when my phone started vibrating I about threw it out the window my defenses in full swing. It was about 7am and Jules was calling me.
"Hello?"
"Alpha she is awake and according to the nurse spitting fire. The nurse says please respect visitation hours but come on in I am headed over to her house to take care of the horses and bring them back to the farm the other person who is boarding there agreed it would be best to get hers a month early Bexleigh said she was done training them. anyway just keeping them tuned and maybe pick up a few outfits for the poor girl. But me and Brax will be at the hospital today too. Do you need a ride or anything?"
"I'm okay, I can bring Rosie here, Bexleigh will not be staying at her house by herself when she gets released anyway I won't leave her vulnerable again."
"I was hoping you said that because she was either coming with us or staying with you, but it is kind of quick so I wasn't sure if you were going to be so quick to move her in."
"I'd move quicker if she gave me that choice," I joked.
"She's a pretty spectacular girl, not just a biased opinion I knew from the moment I first met her that there is something special about her, then she has an amazing personality on top of that. And from what I've seen you deserve each other. Don't make me change my mind Alpha Axel."
"Just call me Axel, you are family. I will head out shortly and get Rosie I might need help convincing her to come with me so if you tell me what time your going to be there I would love assistance with that."
"Give me about an hour to get the trailer hooked up and get there, I think Braxtyn is almost changed."
"How is Andrew doing?"
"Better but he won't be okay until he lays his eyes on her to ensure she's okay, you made quite an impression on him yesterday might I add."
"Hopefully a good one."
"Yes Alpha."
We said our goodbyes and I linked a pack member who has a dog and asked them to go buy everything an old spoiled rotten princess dog may need. I guess if I was going to be a dog dad I was going to make the sassy girl be as comfortable as possible.
***
When I went to Bexleighs house Braxtyn already had the trailer half loaded with all the horses and some stuff from Bexleighs barn. Jules came out toting a large duffle bag on her side and Rosie hot on her tail. She gave me the duffle and grabbed my face in a motherly embrace, "you didn't sleep." She stated it so bluntly it didn't leave room for an answer so I didn't even try to lie just shook my head. "We should all be able to sleep a little better tonight once we see our girl." I went over to Rosie who showed no sign of interest or distaste in my existence, so this was off to a good start.
"Just tell her she's a good girl and scratch behind her ears, that'll get you further with her than anything else. She never had a sweet spot for anyone but Bexleigh. Those girls needed each other since they met each other," Braxtyn said, and I wasn't about to question it. So instead I did it. She looked a little less annoyed then she did before I scratched her ears but still indifferent. Jules helped me load her and her dog food into the back of the SUV and me and Rosie took of down the road. The quicker we got her settled in the quicker I'd get to go see Bexleigh.
When I walked into the hospital it was after 10 I was a little disappointed I wasn't there the second I was allowed but I think she would understand. When I walked in her room Jess and a grouo of other women in scrubs were sitting around her bed talking she looked tired and her face was really swollen and bruised but she had a small smile on her face. When she laid eyes on me her face lit up a bit more and made me insanely grateful I got to see her face light up again. The women all turned to look at me and the room got quite. Bexleigh introduced us all 4 girls in scrubs all worked with her and the one nurse was actually there yesterday and sported a black eye of her own. They left after about 10 minutes and went back to their posts, 2 of them were working the floor Bexleigh was on.
Jess stayed a bit longer then went to leave but I linked her quickly telling her what we knew and to just keep an eye out this was not an accident. I just wanted to be sure whoever this was didn't have an opportunity to hurt Jess because that would kill Bexleigh.
"Finally I have you alone," she said reaching her arms out I went over and gently hugged her and gave her a small kiss on the unaffected cheek.
"I am so glad your okay," her scent through the surgical soaps and medical grade cleaning supplies, her wild flower smell, was still there.
"Your not getting rid of me that easily," she smiled and I pulled up a seat beside her and grabbed her hand. We talked a little about the animals and how Annsely was watching Rosie until I got back to her. I told her Jules and Braxtyn were there getting all the horses today and all their grain sorted out she was a little disappointed that she couldn't fulfill her duties with the horses, but understood this wasn't her fault.
When her family started filtering in I moved back to the couch area and ended up falling asleep, in a restful sleep for the first time since I stayed with Bexleigh. I had hopes that she would never make me sleep alone again after this stint in the hospital. I also hoped we could get to the bottom of her attack before the person who called the attack called another. I was more than willing to protect this girl but at this point we don't even know the origin of her biggest threat.
