But McInnis only chuckled. “You’re like him, I suppose. Don’t fret, I know there’s some secret, and I’m not like to pry or to tell. Me, he saved me dad’s life in the War, and then when I sneaked off underage to fight in Korea, he tracked me down and made sure I got home in one piece. Not entirely successful, though.” He slapped his wooden appendage, making Kim jump. “Never seen anything of this earth move like that man can. The rest of the lads thought he was a space alien, but I reserve judgment.” He shot a sideways glance at Kim, either sizing her up or waiting for a reaction. She did her best not to give him one. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she said gently, but probably succeeded only in reinforcing whatever it was he thought about her. He kept giving her knowing smiles
