Chapter 11: The Watchers

231 Words
The message appeared everywhere. No matter where humans lived, they saw it. In underground settlements. On military bases. Inside abandoned cities. Even in the smallest surviving communities. SPECIES 001: OBSERVATION COMPLETE. Then another message appeared. EVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENT: UNSTABLE. Elias stared at the screen. "Species 001." Mara nodded. "That's us." "Who are Species 002?" She didn't answer. The objects above Earth remained motionless. They didn't attack. They didn't communicate. They simply watched. For three days. Humanity waited. Then every radio on Earth produced the same voice. It sounded neither male nor female. It sounded ancient. "Observation complete." Elias felt his skin crawl. Mara stood beside him. The voice continued. "Deviation detected." Lena whispered: "What deviation?" Mara answered. "Us." The transmission ended. That same night, the Ascended began fighting. Nobody knew why. Some attacked the others. Some defended humans. Others simply stood in groups and stared toward the sky. Human settlements became battlefields. Haven was no longer safe. Survivors were forced onto the surface. Elias led them through the ruins. Noah moved ahead as a scout. Lena carried medical supplies. Mara stayed at the rear. She had become strangely quiet. Elias finally asked her why. She looked at him. "Because I can hear them." "Who?" "All of them." The Ascended. Millions of minds. Every thought. Every fear. Every memory. Then Mara suddenly stopped. Her face changed. "What?" She whispered: "Someone else is listening."
