Then another message appeared.
EVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENT: UNSTABLE.
Elias stared at the screen.
"Species 001."
Mara nodded.
"That's us."
"Who are Species 002?"
She didn't answer.
The objects above Earth remained motionless.
They didn't attack.
They didn't communicate.
They simply watched.
For three days.
Humanity waited.
Then every radio on Earth produced the same voice.
It sounded neither male nor female.
It sounded ancient.
"Observation complete."
Elias felt his skin crawl.
Mara stood beside him.
The voice continued.
"Deviation detected."
Lena whispered:
"What deviation?"
Mara answered.
"Us."
The transmission ended.
That same night, the Ascended began fighting.

Others simply stood in groups and stared toward the sky.

Elias led them through the ruins.

Mara stayed at the rear.
She had become strangely quiet.
Elias finally asked her why.
She looked at him.
"Because I can hear them."

Her face changed.
"What?"
