Chapter 16

991 Words

Alina’s POV Grandma stared at the phone in confusion. Her eyes were sharp even though her smile stayed gentle. I felt my heart drop to my stomach. I slowly stepped out of the warm water, my legs shaky. I picked up the phone with trembling fingers. My hands were wet and slippery from the bath oil, and I almost dropped the phone into the tub. "It's uhm, I can explain…” I didn't know what to say, my head was spiraling. Is this the end of our lies? “Grandma, it's, it's my sister," I said quickly. "Alina. My twin, and sometimes we switch each other’s names for fun. It is silly. You know. Just a twin thing." My voice sounded like it was squeezed through a tight pipe. Forced. Thin. Grandma kept looking at me. She did not say anything. She only nodded very slowly. "Ah. I see," she said.
