Chapter Seventeen: The Breaking Point

1040 Words
I wake in the dead of the night, my pulse hammering in my ears relentlessly, and the blankets around me like ropes holding me down. I struggle against the sheets and comforter, my body breaking out in an icy sweat as fragments of my nightmare come flickering into my conscious mind. I just know that it couldn't have been only a nightmare, as much as I wished it was. It was my inner wolf, my Alpha sense of my mate telling me the horrifying truth. Something had broken in the precarious balance of Soren's life, something drastic and obvious in its source. I remember enough of my vision to know that Jason was a dead man, already growing cold in his grave, for what he had done to my Omega. He was going to be rended limb from limb, and I will feast on his organs for harming my True Mate. I know that no court of law would ever blame me for his murder, not when that disgusting bastard had harmed my mate over and over again. I stumble my way down the stairs from my home, pulling on a pair of flour spotted jeans and a shirt that had at least smelled fresh, my sole intent to get out of the building as quickly as I could. Soren needed me and I hadn't been there to protect my sweet Omega. I wasn't going to allow him to suffer for a single second longer than it took for me to find him, wherever he was. Just as I manage to slide on a pair of shoes, the landline for my bakery rings shrill in the silence of the early morning darkness. I rush to my office, stumbling over a few of the cafe chairs on the trip, and I wrench the door almost clean off its hinges as I scramble to answer the line. A Deeper part of my mind told me that this was Soren, and I can't refuse his call for help. "Soren?" I gasp into the old fashioned receiver, my chest heaving as the other person on the line whimpers in pain and fear. I nearly lose control of my form, going as far as my teeth becoming true fangs in my mouth, the pricks of pain nothing I even register in my mind. "Soren, let me come to get you, I can't let you stay with Jason a second longer." " Aiden..." Soren's soft sob has me nearly in agonized howls, and I chew on my lip as I wait for him to finish what he needed to say. I know he's in pain, and scared, and I long to soothe the agony in both of our souls. " Aiden, can you please come over and get me? I don't have anyone else to call." " Absolutely, honey," I soothe, picking up my keys from where I had dropped them neat my feet. " You're going to be okay, Soren, I promise. I'm coming to get you and your things, and we'll go somewhere safe, away from him." I feel a crushing relief fall on my chest as the siren of a police officers patrol car whoops in the middle distance, because I know now, at least, I can focus more on caring for my injured Omega, rather than tearing my enemy to pieces. "Honey, can you please tell me where you are?" I ask gently, as Soren's soft sobs echo across the phone line. I know he's safe at least, that he wasn't in any immediate danger, but I still needed to get to him relatively quickly, before he gets worked up. Not that he isn't worked up now, but as his Alpha, I know I can prevent a Faint, if he starts to have any effects of the traumatic experience. I just need to get there in time. "I'm on the corner of Avery and Fifth," Soren sniffles, and I can practically see him trying to hold himself together by sheer force of will alone. I make a reassuring rumble in my chest, loud enough to be heard over the line, and Soren Whines softly in his need. "Please, Alpha, I don't know anyone else like you."  " I'll be there in maybe five minutes, alright?" I keep my voice soft, but later it with a gentle helping of my Alpha authority, just enough to calm my Omega and pull him back from the edge of the cliff. I swallow thickly against the tightness in my throat, and I don't doubt that Soren had been devastatingly victimized this night by Jason. I don't want to see the bruises, or the other injuries I know had been inflicted upon my Omega, but so help me, if Jason had broken bones, I'll show him exactly how sharp and large my fangs are. "Hurry Aiden," Soren whispers, another Whine echoing in his voice. The very fact that my mate was in such pain and stress that he physically projected it into his voice told me volumes of what had been done to him. "I need you, Alpha, please." "I know, baby," I tug on a jacket not for my own comfort, but for Soren's, so that he could be comforted with a caring Alpha's scent surrounding him. I know even if for some reason he still is unaware of the Call we have to each other, he still feels soothes by my presence, and I hope he would be soothes by my scent as well. "I'm going to come over and get you, okay? I'll take caref of you, hon. I promise."  I smile brokenly as I hear Soren's faint thanks over the line, and as soon as the line goes dead, I crash my way back through the maze of dining sets, and lock the door of my bakery firmly shut behind me. Avery was only a few streets to the north, and it intersected Fifth street maybe a block to the east. I began to run, the cold stars above lighting my way as I poured every ounce of my strength into reaching my wounded Omega. It was a race against the clock, to save my True Mate from any further pain and sorrow.
