He got her into the deep woods and had drawn his knife. She saw and turned a ghostly white and had actually kneeled to accept a death-blow. He had lost his nerve at that point or recovered his sense, or a bit of both. She was completely innocent and helpless. Everything he knew about good and evil pushed itself into his mind.
