The Contract The silence inside Luca Deveraux's mansion was really different from the world outside. Outside the gates, cameras were flashing, reporters were shouting and rumors were spreading like crazy on the internet. Inside, everything was calm. Too calm. Adriana stood near the glass window looking at the gardens, her arms wrapped around herself. The quiet made her feel uneasy. It felt like the stillness before a storm. Daniel was outside with one of the security guards laughing as he tossed pieces of bread into the fountain pond. A bright orange fish darted through the water snapping at the crumbs. For a moment, watching him laugh made her feel a little better. It eased the tightness in her chest. Then reality came back. This was not their home. They were inside the mansion of a billionaire whose name was in the headlines that morning. Somehow her son had become the center of it all. Behind her, Luca walked slowly across the marble floor. His movements were calm and controlled. Andriana noticed the tension in his shoulders. He looked like a man carrying a problem that was too big for one person. But she did not care. Her life had already been turned down because of him. Across the room, Victor Hale stood near a table scrolling through something on his phone. The glow from the screen reflected in his glasses. He looked up after a moment. "They are still there," he said. Adriana turned slightly. "Who?" she asked. Victor gave a smile. "The media industry," he said. He walked toward the window, glancing outside at the iron gates. "Three news vans arrived twenty minutes ago. Two reporters are trying to climb the wall," he said. Her stomach dropped. "They cannot do that," she said. Victor shrugged. "They can try," he said. Daniel's laughter floated through the doors again, completely unaware of the tension filling the house. Victor watched him thoughtfully. "Kids make headlines," he said quietly. Adriana's body stiffened. "Stop talking about my son like he is a story," she said. Victor's gaze shifted to her. "Miss Vale, your son already is a story," he said. Lucas' voice cut through the room before she could talk. "That is enough," he said. Victor turned calmly. "You asked me to be honest," he said. "I asked you to find solutions," Luca said. Victor slipped his phone into his pocket. "The board wants stability, " he said. "They will get it," Luca said. "They want it today," Victor added. The tension in the room grew thicker. Adriana suddenly realized she was standing inside a battlefield she did not understand. This was not about her or Daniel. This was about money, power, control. Victor leaned casually against the table. "The investors are nervous," he said. "They think the scandal will get worse." Luca said nothing. "They believe you have lost control of the narrative," Victor said. Andriana stepped away from the window. "My son is not part of your narrative," she said. Victor's expression did not change. "That is not how the world sees it," he said. The doors opened and Daniel ran inside, cheeks flushed with excitement. "Mommy, the fish are huge," he said, holding his hands wide. Andriana forced a smile. "That is nice sweetheart," she said. "Can we come here again tomorrow?" he asked. The question hit her harder than it should have. She had no idea what tomorrow would look like anymore. Before she could talk, Luca stepped forward. "You can feed them whenever you want," he said. Daniel's face lit up. "" "Yes." The boy ran back outside. Victor watched him go. "Adorable," he said softly. Andriana wanted to throw something at him. Instead, she crossed her arms and looked at Lucas. "Why are we here?" she asked. Luca did not answer immediately. He walked toward a table near the staircase where a dark leather folder rested. When he opened it, the faint rustle of paper echoed through the room. Andriana felt dread settle in her chest. Victor noticed the folder. Smiled faintly. "Ah… you are going with that solution," he said. Luca ignored him. He removed sheets of paper. Place them neatly on the table. The title made Adriana's breath catch. Marriage Agreement Her heart began to pound. "You are serious," she said. "Yes," Luca replied. Victor gave a chuckle. "The board will love it." Adriana stared at the document. A legal contract is twelve pages long, well detailed. Precise and every condition clearly outlined. Twelve months of marriage. Public appearances. Media interviews as a family. Living arrangements inside the mansion. Financial compensation. Strict confidentiality clauses. Her fingers trembled as she flipped through the pages. This was not a suggestion. It had already been planned. "You prepared this in advance," she said. "I anticipated the situation," Luca replied. Victor stepped closer. "Investors love marriage. Stability. Responsibility. Family values." Andriana slammed the papers down. "This is not stability," she said. Her voice shook. "This is manipulation." Victor tilted his head. "Survival." Luca spoke quietly. "The scandal needs to be controlled." "And your solution is to fake a marriage?" she asked. "It will calm the media," Luca said. "And the investors," Victor added. Andriana stepped back trying to breathe. This could not be real. Victor spoke again. "The media will lose interest if the story becomes predictable." She turned sharply. "How is this predictable?" Victor smiled. "Billionaires take responsibility for his son and marry his mother. It is a fairy tale." "It is a lie," she said. "People enjoy lies," he replied. Luca stepped forward. "This protects Daniel." That hit her hard. "You do not get to use him," she said. "I am not using him." "Yes you are." Her chest tightened. "You vanished for five years." "I did not know he existed." "And suddenly you care?" "I care because he is my son." The words hung heavily in the air. Daniel's laughter drifted in again from outside. Adriana closed her eyes briefly. Her son deserved peace and safety. Not cameras and reporters waiting outside his school. When she opened her eyes, Victor was watching her closely. "There is another factor," he said. "What factor?" "The board." Lucas' gaze sharpened. "Victor." "They are discussing replacing Luca as CEO." Adriana blinked. "What?" "They believe the scandal has weakened his leadership," Victor said. "That discussion is premature," Luca said coldly. "Not to them." Victor glanced at the contract. "This would solve that problem." The realization settled slowly. This was not about media attention. It was about power. If Luca lost control, someone else would take over. Daniel could become part of that fight. Her stomach twisted. "This is insane." Victor's smile widened slightly. "Welcome to politics." She looked back at the contract. The paper felt heavier now. More dangerous. Agreeing meant stepping into a war she barely understood while Refusing meant leaving Daniel exposed. Across the room Luca watched her carefully. He did not pressure her. He did not argue. He simply waited. That made the choice harder. Outside Daniels laughter echoed again. Bright. Carefree. Unaware that his future depended on this moment. Andriana looked down at the contract. For the time the path forward did not look clear. It looked dangerous. Something deep inside her whispered a terrifying truth.
