The decision
At first in the morning, the sound was like cars were driving really loud. The longer Adriana lay in bed, the more she could hear voices and cameras clicking.
The voices were loud and angry.
Andriana slowly opened her eyes.
For a moment she did not know where she was.
Then she saw the ceiling and the curtains. She remembers it was at Lucas' mansion. She thought about the scandal and the contract.
Her stomach felt tight so she sat up and looked out the window.
There were a lot of reporters and cameras outside the gate.
Security guards were trying to keep them back. Adriana could still hear them shouting.
"Miss Vale!"
"Is the child Luca Deveraux's son?"
"Are you getting married?"
Andriana felt her chest get tight so she stepped back from the window.
Then she heard a knock at the door.
"Mommy?"
It was Daniel's voice.
Adriana quickly opened the door. Daniel was standing there in his pajamas.
"Morning," she said gently.
Daniel did not smile, and his eyes looked unsure.
"Why are people yelling outside?" he asked.
Andriana's heart sank. She pulled Daniel close.
"They are reporters," she said.
"What is a reporter?" Daniel asked.
Andriana explained that reporters are people who ask questions on television.
Daniel frowned. "Why are they asking about me?"
Andriana felt hurt. She said they were just curious.
"About what?" Daniel asked.
Andriana brushed his hair back. Said, "About our lives."
Daniel looked toward the window. A flash of light hit the glass.
He asked, "Are they looking at me?"
Andriana's throat got tight. She said, "No."
Just then a loud shout from outside and Daniel jumped and grabbed her sleeve.
"Why won't they go away?" he asked.
Andriana held him tighter. "I am here." She said.
Footsteps came from the staircase and Luca appeared at the end of the hallway.
He was already dressed in a suit. His eyes looked sharp when he saw Daniel.
"Security is trying to move them," he said.
Daniel looked up at Lucas. He asked, "Why are they here?"
Luca paused before saying, "Because people want to know about you."
"Why?" Daniel asked.
Luca said, "Because you are important."
Daniel just frowned and said, "I am just me."
Lucas' face softened a little.
Daniel looked at him carefully, studying him in the way children do. Then another loud shout came from outside.
Daniel flinched.
Andriana felt something twist inside her.
Her son was scared. Luca noticed it too.
His jaw got tight. "Come downstairs," he said.
They went to the living room, where Victor Hale was standing near the window with a tablet.
He looked up. "Well, the story has officially exploded," he said.
Adriana's patience. She said, "My son is here."
Victor lowered the tablet.
Daniel moved closer to Andriana and asked, "Mommy, are they going to come?"
Adriana's heart skipped a beat. She said, "No."
Victor turned the tablet toward Lucas. "The company's stock dropped another four points," he said.
Luca asked about the board. Victor said they wanted a solution before noon.
Then Victor glanced at Adriana. "The marriage announcement would fix this immediately," he said.
The word "marriage" settled in the room, then Daniel looked toward the windows.
Reporters were standing on top of a van trying to film over the gate.
His face went pale. He grabbed Andriana tighter.
"Mommy, I do not want them to see me," he whispered.
Her heart broke. She crouched down immediately. "They cannot see you from here," she said.
"But they are trying," Daniel said.
His voice trembled now. "I do not like it," he said.
Andriana wrapped her arms around him. Her mind was racing.
This was what she had feared. The quiet life she had built for Daniel was gone. The world had found them. It was not going to leave.
Luca watched silently.
Victor spoke again, his voice quieter now. "This will only get worse."
Andriana looked up sharply. "Stop," she said.
Victor continued. "Tomorrow they will go to Daniel's school," he said.
Her stomach twisted violently.
"They cannot do that," she said.
"They will," Victor said. His voice remained calm. "That is how this works," he said.
Andriana felt panic rising inside her.
She imagined cameras outside Daniel's classroom. Reporters shouting his name and children would be whispering. Her son will be hiding from strangers with cameras.
Adriana's chest got tight.
Daniel tugged her sleeve. "Mommy, are we in trouble?" he asked.
Andriana said, "No ". But they already were.
She stood up slowly. The room felt smaller.
The noise outside was louder. Daniel was trembling beside her.
Her gaze moved to the table where the contract was lying.
It was twelve pages long. It all came down to one decision.
Luca followed her gaze. Said nothing.
Victor watched carefully. Andriana took a breath.
This was not about pride or anger, it was about protecting her son.
Daniel looked up at her. Asked, "Mommy, can we go somewhere quiet?"
That broke something inside Adriana because there was nowhere left to go.
She looked at Lucas, the contract, then Daniel.
Finally, she said, "I will do it."
The words felt heavy. Victor straightened up.
"Well that solves problems," he said.
Luca ignored him and asked Andriana if she was sure.
She nodded slowly. "For Daniel's sake." She said
The room fell silent.
Luca walked to the table. He placed the contract in front of Adriana. Set a pen beside it.
Adriana stared at the paper. Her hands felt cold.
This was it. She thought about the life she left behind. The small apartment, the days with Daniel. All are gone.
Daniel squeezed her hand. Andriana whispered, "It is okay."
Then she picked up the pen. The ink moved across the page. The sound felt louder than the shouting.
When she finished, she set the pen down. Luca signed next.
The contract was complete. Victor smiled faintly.
"I will inform the board," he said. He walked out already on his phone.
The room fell quiet again. Daniel looked between Adriana and Lucas.
"Are we staying here now?" he asked.
Luca said, "Yes. " Daniel thought about it.
Then he looked toward the fountain. Said, "Okay."
His simple acceptance made Adriana's chest ache because he did not understand.
She had just tied her life to Luca Deveraux for a year. A fake marriage, a public performance.
She was stepping into a world full of power, secrets and enemies she could not see.
Andriana knew one thing. This decision would change everything. Not just what people read in the news. Something deeper, something bigger, something dangerous.
And inside she felt the truth clearly. The contract was not the solution, it was the beginning.
