CHAPTER5

On getting to my apartment, I undressed and went straight into the shower. I wouldn't have believed that my day would end in this manner. A perfectly planned day got wrecked by cancer. Fuck cancer!! After daydreaming about how I would crush the interview and start my new job at a huge company with a huge pay and set my life in motion only for it to remain a dream. I let the tears flow freely in the shower as the water washed it away almost immediately. After an extended period under the soothing cascade of the shower, I came out and headed directly to bed, hoping that sleep would eventually ease the ache of my pain and sorrow. I woke up with a throbbing headache probably caused by sobbing. Well, it's a new day to carry my cross, no amount of crying can change the situation. There is no point crying over spilled milk. I need to take action. After giving myself a pep talk, I stood up and went into the bathroom to prepare for my new journey. Getting a job. I got out of the shower to get dressed. Looking into my closet I picked the blue high-waisted jean trousers ripped at the knee and a white crop top as my outfit for the day. I brought out my pink blazer too just in case I would have to enter a corporate setting. I sat down in front of the computer to search for urgent vacancies, I applied for most of them, closed my computer, and set out for the day. “Excuse me, I saw the vacancy post outside,” I said to the lady behind the desk with a smile as I stepped into the restaurant. "Oh, that should have been removed. We actually hired someone earlier this morning," she replied apologetically, offering a smile as she resumed her task. “Alright, thank you," I replied with a hint of disappointment as I turned to leave. This was the eighth place I had visited in my quest for a job. It seemed luck wasn't on my side today. However, I was determined to secure a source of income, no matter how low the pay was, by the end of the day. It was non-negotiable; I needed to start somewhere. As I was walking down the street, I saw a coffee shop and I was thirsty. I needed to do something about my parchment, so I walked closer to get a coffee. I walked into the shop and went straight to the counter to get my coffee. “ Welcome ma'am, what would you like to order?” a young man looking like he is barely 20 asked. “I would like a latte and a doughnut please,” I responded with a smile. After a moment. “Here you go.” “Thank you,” with that, I went to a table at the corner to enjoy my breakfast with the hope of reenergizing myself to further continue my quest. “I can't believe Tate will just quit like that, without prior notice and he knows we are in our high sales season. How does he expect us to manage through? This is why I don't like employing you these youngsters you are so unpredictable,” a man in his thirties was lamenting to the guy that served me. The young man just kept quiet and was looking down. When the man didn't receive a response he just hissed and left frustrated. After finishing my meal, I stood up and went to the counter. “ I am sorry, I heard there is a vacancy. I would like to apply for the position,” I said calmly to the young man while blinking my eyes like a broken doll. He looked up at me and sized me up and I could hear him say in his mind “Someone as beautiful and elegant as you?” “I am not in charge of that, let me inform my manager,” with that he picked up the phone and put a call through. The man in his thirties, Mr. Andrew came out with a stern expression. “Who is the person applying?” he asked the young man. “I am the one,” I responded before he could. He furrowed his brows because he was surprised, that someone like me could apply for such a job. “ Are you sure you can do this?” he asked skeptically. “Yes, I can” “It's a part-time job and if you're sure you're ready you can resume tomorrow.” with that he left. “Thank you, sir,” I was elated that finally something was working out for me today. That's a win for today, with that I strutted out of the coffee shop while whistling. Stopped a cab and headed to the hospital. “Thank you,” I said as I paid the driver with a smile on my face. I walked into the hospital feeling much lighter as compared to yesterday. I went straight to her ward. I saw her through the glass talking to the nurse while laughing. I was happy to see her laugh which melted my heart. As she turned and caught sight of me, a warm smile spread across her face. "Moon Pie, you're here! Don't just stand there, come in and give me a hug," she beckoned, extending her arms towards me. I went in and hugged her. I greeted the nurse as well and thanked her for caring for Grandma Joyce. “I got a job today at a very nice coffee shop,” I told her with so much excitement. She looked at me apologetically. “I am starting tomorrow, though It’s a part-time job, it's better than none. Remember I told you I will take care of everything, I plan on keeping my promise because I love you so much.” I said that cheesy. After a while of telling her about my day, I told her I needed to get water downstairs as I was thirsty. While walking through the corridor, I saw Grandma Joyce’s attending physician and a man talking but his back was turned towards me. The doctor turned his head in my direction and waved at me with a smile, with that the man turned to see who the doctor was greeting and our eyes locked. I gasped.
