Chapter 1: Destiny’s First Move

1048 Words
I am Kaal, the silent observer of destiny, and the unseen force that pulls the strings of the universe. I have come to tell you a story. It is not a tale of heroes or righteous men. It is a story that crosses the absolute limits of darkness. It is a chronicle of obsession, written in blood, born from a tragedy that shattered the natural order centuries ago. Humans believe they have free will, but they do not understand destiny. When the universe decides that two souls are bound, it will burn the world to the ground to bring them together. Our story begins in the isolated, mist-choked highlands of Scotland, at Dunbridge University. Long before it was filled with naive students and textbooks, this sprawling, gothic stone fortress was an ancient castle. Its towering spires pierce the gray sky like jagged teeth, and the surrounding Blackwood Moors whisper with secrets that human ears are too fragile to hear. The heavy, iron-wrought gates of the university groaned open, and Cole entered the campus. To the untrained eye, Cole Vance was merely a striking, brooding new transfer student, perhaps twenty-one years old, dressed in dark, expensive layers to ward off the biting Scottish cold. But beneath the flawless, pale marble of his skin beat the heart of an apex predator. He was seven hundred and seven years old—a terrifying amalgamation of cold, calculating vampire intellect and raw, possessive werewolf aggression. For centuries, he had felt nothing but a hollow, gnawing emptiness. As he walked through the sprawling stone courtyard, the icy wind whipping his dark hair, a sudden flash of movement broke his cold reverie. A heavy leather sports ball came hurtling through the damp air, aimed directly at his head. It was a girl who had hit the ball toward him. She was young, vibrant, and entirely careless. This girl was Freya. A normal human would have been struck, perhaps knocked to the cobblestones. But Cole was not human. Without breaking his stride, he raised a single, pale hand. He caught the ball instantly, his supernatural reflexes snapping into action with terrifying, effortless speed. The impact made a sharp smack against his palm, yet his arm didn't flinch a single millimeter. Freya, realizing her mistake, jogged over to him quickly. Cole turned his bottomless, dark eyes toward her, and the moment he looked at her face, a strange, electric jolt of shock rippled through his frozen chest. He stared at her, his ancient mind suddenly reeling because her face looked inexplicably familiar. There was something in the slope of her jaw, the shape of her eyes—a ghost of a memory from a lifetime he had buried centuries ago. "I'm so sorry!" Freya gasped, pausing to catch her breath. She looked at his hand, her eyes widening in amazement. "Wow. Nice catch. Your reflexes are incredible." Cole forced his hardened features to remain impassive. He shoved the phantom memories deep down into the dark abyss of his mind. He tossed the ball back to her with a fluid motion. "It's okay," he murmured, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that seemed to chill the air around them, and he turned to walk away. But as he navigated the labyrinthine stone corridors of the ancient castle, he remained lost in deep thought, his mind plagued by the encounter. Why did she look so familiar? he thought, his heightened senses humming with an unexplainable anxiety. Where have I seen those features before? His dark introspection was interrupted when he finally met up with Declan in one of the long, arched hallways. Declan Vance was human—warm, grounded, and blissfully unaware of the true depths of the monster he called a brother. Declan greeted him with a relieved smile and guided Cole through the university to his new, isolated room on the fourth floor. The room was massive, featuring a roaring stone fireplace and a large gothic window that looked down over the sprawling courtyards. "You can stay here comfortably," Declan assured him, clapping a hand on Cole's rigid shoulder. "It's completely private. No one will ever find out your secret here." Cole simply nodded, staring out the glass at the gray sky. He appreciated Declan's loyalty. The human family had saved him in the woods years ago, and Declan had taken it upon himself to protect Cole's identity in the modern world. Declan checked his watch. "It's breakfast time right now," he said, moving toward the heavy wooden door. "Come on, let's go eat together." Cole had no need for human food, but blending in required participating in their mundane rituals. He followed his brother down the winding, torch-lit staircases toward the grand dining hall. The hall was a sensory overload for a Hybrid. The scent of hundreds of pulsing human veins, the chaotic hum of heartbeats, and the overwhelming chatter echoed off the vaulted ceilings. Cole and Declan navigated through the sea of students and took their seats at a heavy wooden table. Cole sat rigidly, his presence dropping the temperature in their immediate vicinity, his eyes staring blankly at the wood grain. And then, the universe snapped its trap shut. A girl approached their table. "Is this the brother you were talking about?" a voice asked. The sound of that voice hit Cole like a physical blow. It was a soft, melodic cadence that bypassed his ears and struck directly at his soul. It was a voice he had not heard in seven hundred years. A voice he had wept over in a burning village. A voice he had buried in the cold earth. Slowly, agonizingly, Cole lifted his head. He looked at Ivy, and his immortal heart, which rarely beat, slammed violently against his ribs. He was completely paralyzed by shock. It wasn't just a resemblance. It wasn't just a trick of the light. Standing before him, wrapped in a thick university sweater instead of medieval silk, was Isolde. The exact same piercing eyes, the exact same lips, the exact same soul he had mourned for centuries. Unable to control his own body, driven by an ancient, overwhelming force, Cole began to slowly, shakily stand up from the table, his dark eyes locked entirely on the girl who had just shattered his reality.
