Thoughts Across the Miles

Dhanush Reddy lay sprawled across his bed, phone glowing softly in his hands, its screen illuminating his intense, thoughtful expression in the dim Warangal room. Outside, the world hummed quietly — the occasional honk from the streets, the faint chatter of neighbors, the rustle of leaves in the breeze. Inside, though, Dhanush’s mind was anything but quiet. Her last message replayed in his head again. Not the words alone, but her tone, her laughter embedded in those words, her teasing cadence. He could almost hear it as if she were in the room with him, looking him square in the eyes, eyebrows slightly arched, lips quirking into that mischievous half-smile that had left him feeling both challenged and unnervingly drawn. Why do I keep thinking about her? he muttered aloud, a hand running through his messy hair. Normally, Dhanush could compartmentalize things — college, friends, racing, his own past — everything neatly filed. But she wasn’t something he could file. She didn’t fit. She didn’t belong anywhere he could control, yet she had invaded every corner of his mind. His thoughts flickered back to Ananya’s words, uttered lightly in jest but with an impact that would reverberate far longer than she intended: “What if she likes you?” At first, he had dismissed it outright. Ridiculous. A Bangalore girl — older than him by a year, confident, fearless, sharp. She wouldn’t. There was no way. But the idea had lodged itself, like a tiny spark caught in dry grass. It flared up every time he thought about her, and soon the sparks became a fire he couldn’t ignore. Every message from Anandi now carried a weight he didn’t intend to give it. That simple, teasing phrase — “ayyyyo, rama… seriously?” — transformed in his mind. Every emoji, every punctuation mark, every carefully chosen word became a potential clue. What if she’s just joking? he asked himself, pacing the length of the room. No… that laugh, that tone… she wouldn’t joke like that if she didn’t want to see my reaction. No… what if she’s trying to see if I care? His fingers hovered over the phone again and again, hovering over the text field as if the right words could unlock a hidden truth he didn’t yet understand. She must be too smart to like someone like me… right? Doubt crept in, gnawing at the edges of his certainty. He could intimidate strangers, command attention with a scowl, crush opponents in fights — but Anandi? She wasn’t impressed by strength, and she had no reason to care for him. Overanalyzing the Smallest Details The day passed in tiny, obsessive increments of thought. During class, his mind drifted. He remembered how she had scolded him over Krishna’s phone — that first interaction, sharp, furious, protective of her friend, yet playful beneath the surface. He replayed the scene countless times: the way her voice had risen, the way her words had landed like precision strikes, and the subtle laughter that followed when the scolding gave way to amusement. He remembered her i********: profile picture, too — the one that had made him tap “Follow” almost instinctively. That mischievous glint in her eyes, the confidence radiating from her posture, the curve of her smile… he couldn’t look away. Every detail had lodged itself in his memory, revisiting him like a looping video he couldn’t pause. He found himself imagining scenarios that had never happened: Walking beside her in Bangalore streets, and her teasing him about something trivial. Watching her laugh at a joke he made, her eyes sparkling, that mischievous grin that made his chest tighten. Sending her a message about something he loved — racing, mechanics, F1 — and imagining her genuinely interested, leaning in closer to read every detail. Each imagined scenario made his heart race and his stomach flutter. It was both thrilling and terrifying. Ananya’s Subtle Influence And then there was Ananya. The influence she had had on his mind was subtle, almost invisible, yet immensely powerful. She had joked, lightly nudging him: “Bro, think about it… what if she likes you?” At first, he laughed it off. “No way.” But the thought stuck, uninvited. Every interaction with Anandi now felt like a potential test of that tiny hypothesis. He started to read between every line of her messages. Every teasing remark, every playful jab, every “ayyyyo, rama” was now a clue, a hint, a potential confession in disguise. Was she testing me? he wondered. Or is this all in my head? No… she laughed at that one comment yesterday… maybe that means something. The Obsession Grows By nightfall, Dhanush’s thoughts were tangled in a web of fascination and doubt. He checked his phone compulsively. “Did she reply?” “Why hasn’t she sent another message yet?” “Did I read too much into that emoji?” “What if she doesn’t feel the same?” He found himself planning what he would say next, analyzing every word she had ever sent, revisiting voice notes, and replaying laughter in his head. Each memory became a piece of a puzzle he desperately wanted to solve. Even during meals, during practice sessions, while chatting with Shresth or Mukul, he caught his mind drifting back to her. “I wonder what she’s doing now…” “Is she laughing at something… thinking about me?” “Does she even notice me the way I notice her?” A Quiet Night, A Restless Heart Eventually, Dhanush found himself lying back on the bed, eyes staring at the ceiling, phone set aside but still illuminating the dim room in tiny pulses of light. His internal monologue ran in circles: She doesn’t even know… I’ve been thinking about her nonstop for days. I can’t just let this go… but what if she doesn’t feel the same? But I need to know… I can’t stop imagining her, wondering about her… The mixture of infatuation, curiosity, admiration, and the faintest hint of fear gripped him in a way that was unfamiliar. He sighed, running a hand through his hair again, heart still racing. He knew something had changed — subtly, irrevocably. Anandi wasn’t just a girl he chatted with anymore. She had become someone he couldn’t stop thinking about, someone whose presence had invaded his mind, his thoughts, his quiet moments. And somewhere deep down, he realized that the brainwashing — the nudge from Ananya — had done its job. It had made him question, reflect, obsess, and care in ways he didn’t expect. The question, unspoken but pressing, lingered in the corners of his mind: Does she like me… the way I think I like her? And that question, small and terrifying, would shape every conversation, every message, every heartbeat in the days to come.
