CHAPTER 3: THE RECOGNITION BANQUET

900 Words
The hall was already full when I stepped in. Voices. Laughter. Power. All of it wrapped in gold and deception. For a split second, everything slowed. Eyes turned. Whispers followed. So this is what it feels like… to be seen. Not as a mistake. But as a spectacle. “Announcing—Chloe.” The name echoed across the hall, unfamiliar on their tongues, yet heavy enough to silence the room. I walked forward slowly, each step deliberate. Measured. Unshaken. If they expected hesitation… they came to the wrong person. At the far end, my so-called family stood like royalty greeting a guest. No. Not a guest. An exhibit. Selina stood beside them, radiant in a gown that screamed perfection. Soft colors, elegant design—carefully chosen to make her look like everything I wasn’t supposed to be. Refined. Graceful. Accepted. Her eyes met mine. And she smiled. Game on. “Welcome,” the woman—my mother—said, her voice carrying just enough warmth to fool the crowd. “Tonight, we acknowledge our daughter… Chloe.” Polite applause filled the room. Empty. Calculated. I smiled faintly. Let them clap. They’d remember me for something else soon. The night unfolded like a performance. Guests approached. Compliments laced with curiosity. Questions wrapped in judgment. “Where were you raised?” “Do you understand our customs?” “Can you truly stand beside Alpha Kael?” Ah. There it was. The real question behind all of them. Are you worthy? I answered each one with calm precision, giving them just enough… but never everything. Because mystery? Is power. Then Selina made her move. Of course she did. “Why don’t you join me?” she said sweetly, drawing attention effortlessly. A small crowd gathered. Perfect. She turned to me, smile soft but eyes sharp. “I thought it would be nice for everyone to see… how you carry yourself.” Ah. A test. Public. Calculated. I stepped forward without hesitation. “Of course.” Music began to play—soft, elegant, controlled. Selina moved first. Graceful. Perfect. Every step practiced. Every turn flawless. The crowd watched, impressed. Of course they were. She had been preparing for this her entire life. Then it was my turn. Silence fell. Expectation thick in the air. I took a step forward. Then another. And another. Not mimicking her. Not competing. But owning every movement like it belonged to me. Because I wasn’t dancing to impress them. I was reminding them— I don’t need to fit into your world. I can dominate it. By the time the music stopped… The silence was louder than applause. Selina’s smile had disappeared. Completely. Humiliation. Clean. Precise. Public. But I didn’t stay. Because I could feel it. That shift. That subtle wrongness in the air. Danger. Without a word, I turned and walked out toward the garden. The cool night wrapped around me instantly. Quiet. Dark. Perfect. Then— A sound. Soft. Almost nothing. But I heard it. Behind me. I didn’t turn. “Bad choice,” I said calmly. The first attacker moved. Fast. Deadly. Silent. I stepped aside just enough, grabbing his wrist and twisting— Crack. He dropped before he could make a sound. The second came from the left. Knife. Predictable. I caught his arm mid-strike, drove my knee into his ribs, then slammed him to the ground. The third hesitated. Smart. But not smart enough. “Run,” I told him quietly. He didn’t. Mistake. Three seconds later— He was on the ground too. Unconscious. Broken. Done. Silence returned. Heavy. Satisfied. I straightened slowly, brushing invisible dust from my dress. Calm. Unbothered. Like nothing had happened. From the shadows… Someone watched. Unmoving. Unseen. But not unnoticed. My gaze shifted slightly—not directly at him, but close enough. Acknowledging. I know you’re there. A low voice broke the silence. “…Interesting.” I didn’t react. Didn’t turn. “Watching instead of helping?” I said lightly. A pause. Then footsteps. Slow. Confident. Dangerous. He stepped into the faint moonlight. Tall. Commanding. Eyes darker than the night itself. Alpha Kael. So the rumors were wrong. He wasn’t incapable. He was controlled. Calculated. And far more dangerous than anyone realized. His gaze moved over the scene—the fallen men, the lack of panic, the complete absence of fear. Then back to me. “…You’re not what they said,” he murmured. I finally turned, meeting his eyes fully. “And you watch your future Luna get attacked,” I replied, unimpressed. “Interesting leadership.” A flicker of something crossed his expression. Amusement. Dangerous. “You handled it,” he said simply. I stepped closer. Not intimidated. Not careful. “You enjoyed it.” Not a question. A statement. Silence stretched between us. Thick. Charged. Then— A faint smirk touched his lips. “Maybe.” There it was. Truth. Raw. Unfiltered. I held his gaze for a second longer before stepping past him. “Next time,” I said calmly, “try not to send weak ones.” I didn’t look back. Didn’t wait. Because I already knew— He was watching. And this time? Not out of curiosity. But interest. Behind me, Kael’s voice came, low and certain. “…This will be fun.” And for the first time since I arrived— I smiled. Because finally… Something here felt worth breaking.
