CHAPTER 2 : THE GIRL WITH NO PACK

1011 Words
I couldn’t breathe. Alpha Kael’s question—“Who are you?”—echoed in my head long after the guards dragged the rogue twins away. His voice was cold enough to freeze blood, yet something in his eyes… something unsettled me. No one ever looked at me like that. Like I mattered. I forced myself to step backward, putting distance between us. Distance was safety. But the Alpha took a step forward. “Why are you alone in my borders?” he pressed, eyes narrowing. “Rogues don’t carry healing herbs. And you don’t smell like one.” I swallowed hard. My heart was beating so loudly I swore he could hear it—wolves had sharp hearing, after all. “I… am passing through,” I managed to say softly. “I didn’t know this was your territory.” That was a lie. I knew exactly where I was. I had walked into dangerous land on purpose. But what other choice did I have? I had been running for three years, hiding from a past I refused to remember and a pack I tried to forget. Kael’s wolf eyes scanned me from head to toe. Not lustfully—no, it was worse. It was as if he was dissecting every inch of me, looking for something I didn’t know I had. “You’re lying,” he said. My breath hitched. His gamma and beta stood behind him, watching. The beta—Leon—looked curious. The gamma—Rye—looked annoyed, like I was delaying their dinner. “Alpha,” Leon whispered, “the patrol has found new tracks. We should—” “Later,” Kael interrupted sharply, eyes still locked on me. Why couldn’t he look away? Why did it feel like his stare was peeling layers off me—layers I spent years building? “I won’t hurt you,” he said finally, voice dropping just a little. “Unless you give me a reason to.” A warning and a comfort. Both at once. That was dangerous. I stepped back again. “I don’t want trouble.” His jaw clenched. “Trouble found you the moment you stepped into Bloodmoon territory.” Bloodmoon. I froze. Of all packs… I walked into his. The most feared, the most ruthless… and the most cursed. Rumors said their Alpha killed anything that entered his borders without permission. Rumors said he trusted no one. Rumors said he had no mate. My chest tightened. I bowed my head. “If you let me leave, I will. I won’t come back.” “No,” he said immediately. No? I lifted my gaze, startled. “What?” Kael stepped closer until he stood just a foot away, towering over me. The scent of pine and iron wrapped around me—cold, earthy, unmistakably dominant. “I don’t allow strangers to walk away without answers,” he said. “Especially someone like you.” “Someone like me?” He frowned slightly, almost confused. “You smell… wrong.” My throat tightened. I knew exactly why. A wolf who doesn’t shift. A wolf who doesn’t have a pack scent. A wolf who doesn’t belong anywhere. A broken wolf. “I’m just a healer,” I whispered. Leon’s eyebrows rose. Rye scoffed. Kael’s expression didn’t change. “You saved those pups.” “I couldn’t let them die.” “Most rogues wouldn’t care,” he replied. “Well, I’m not most rogues,” I snapped before I could stop myself. The air dropped. Rye muttered, “You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that.” Kael’s lips twitched—as if amused. But then the hardness returned. “You’re coming with us.” My heart lurched. “What? No. I—” “You’re not safe out here,” he said coldly. That surprised me. “Why do you care?” He paused for only one second. But it was enough for me to see it—conflict flickering in his eyes, as if he didn’t know the answer himself. “I don’t,” he said. “But I need to know who you are.” He turned around and started walking toward the massive black truck parked behind the trees. Leon nodded politely at me. Rye sighed dramatically. I… remained frozen. Should I run? I could. Right now. Into the forest. But then I felt something strange—a tug in my chest. A faint spark. A whisper from deep within my wolf, buried for years. A whisper I hadn’t heard in so long: Follow him. … No. Absolutely not. I clenched my fists. I didn’t trust wolves. I didn’t trust packs. I didn’t trust Alphas—especially not the ruthless Bloodmoon Alpha who ruled with iron claws. But before I could move, Kael looked back over his shoulder. “Are you coming,” he said, “or do I have to carry you myself?” My cheeks burned. “I can walk.” “Good.” I exhaled shakily and forced my feet to follow him, even though every instinct screamed at me to run the other way. But a part of me—a part I didn’t want to listen to—felt something else entirely. Curiosity. Connection. Fearful attraction. And something deeper. Something terrifying. As I climbed into the truck, I caught Kael glancing at me again. His eyes softened for a fraction of a second. As if he recognized me. But that was impossible. I was no one. I had no pack. I had no past. Or so I believed— until the Alpha of Bloodmoon whispered words that shattered the world I built for myself. “You don’t know what you are, do you?” I froze. Kael stared at me like he just uncovered a secret I didn’t even know I carried. A secret worth killing for. And suddenly… I realized something horrifying. Maybe I didn’t walk into Bloodmoon territory by accident. Maybe fate dragged me here. And maybe— it was only the beginning.
