Adrian laughed at me as I rummaged through my closet, looking for the outfit I had bought last month specifically for this day.
"Adrian shut up and help me!" I yelled, throwing a shoe at him.
"Okay okay!" He came over. "What does it look like?"
"It"s a pair of light jeans and a white button up shirt." I said, flipping through the hangers. "I hung it up after I got home so I would be able to find it but I have too many clothes!" I groaned in frustration.
"Why does it have to be that outfit? It sounds pretty plain to me, just grab a different shirt and a pair of jeans." He shrugged.
"No Adrian. I can"t. The shirt was a button up. It"s supposed to be professional looking! You know how my mom is! She wanted me to wear a dress, but wearing a dress is a definite no. So agreed on this outfit after an hour of trying to convince her."
"Why didn"t you wear a dress?" He asked.
"If I wear a dress it"ll make me seem more feminine. And then the alphas that will be here will think it"s okay to call me Luna. But I"m an Alpha, not a Luna." I growled.
He nodded and we continued to look in silence.
"Is this it?" He asked, holding a hanger out.
"Yes!" I yelled, grabbing it from him and hugging him.
He chuckled as I quickly threw my clothes off and slipped into the jeans and shirt.
Adrian and I have been best friends since we were really young, so getting changed in front of him isn"t something I stress about.
I grabbed my white flats from my closet and ran downstairs where my mom and dad were waiting.
"Right on time." My dad said, smiling at me. "Happy Birthday."
"Thank you guys." I said, sitting down and slipping on my shoes.
"What took you so long?" My Mom asked.
"Well," Adrian walked down the stairs. "First she made me help curl her hair. Then she took forever to decide if she wanted makeup on. She opted for no, thinking she"d look too feminine. Then, it took us forever to find her clothes." He said, shaking his head at me. "She"s a mess."
"You"re an ass." I said, punching his arm.
My mom and dad laughed at us as Adrian rubbed his arm.
"Everyone will be here very soon. I"ve just been informed they have crossed the border." My dad said, waving for us to follow him.
Our house was enormous, but mainly because most Alphas have a lot of children. In my moms case she could only have one. Me.
So they decided to knock down some walls and combine a lot of the back rooms into one big room which we use to host all of our parties.
"Everything is set up." My dad said. "There will be seven alphas here tonight. Jackson, Elijah, Tyler, David, Allen, Ben, and Lucas. They"ll all be bringing their children and some will have their Luna"s come as well. Be careful Mak, they are all looking for reasons you shouldn"t be Alpha, along with hoping that you"ll be mates with one of their sons."
I nodded and looked around at all of the decorations and food that was out.
"I know how to handle myself dad." I said.
"I"m just preparing you Makenna." He said. "Some of these alphas are unpredictable bast-"
He was cut off by the doorbell ringing.
"I"ll get it." I said.
Adrian followed me as I walked to the door and opened it, smiling at everyone who was standing there.
"Hello." I said, opening the door wider. "Please, come in."
I lead them all back to where my mom and dad were waiting.
"Thank You All For coming." I said, looking out at all of the people that were here. "As you all know, I"m 18 now. Which means I"ll be taking over the role as Alpha of this pack and Queen of Wolves. I hope you guys can accept that. I assure you I will be as great of an Alpha as I can be, I"ve been trained by my father for multiple years now and I have faith in myself."
They all clapped and then it began.
One after another, they came and brought all of their sons.
I talked to multiple Alphas as they introduced me to their sons, hoping I"d be their mate.
They all had the same look of disappointment when they realized they weren"t my mate.
"Hello Makenna." Jackson said, walking over to me. "These are my two sons, Simon and Noah."
"Hello." I smiled, shaking their hands. I saw the disappointment in Jacksons eyes as he realized neither of his sons were my mate.
After talking to them both for a few minutes I learned that Simon would be the Alpha in a few months, but Noah is only 16.
"I hope you don"t mind Jackson, but I"d like to talk to Alpha Makenna." Alpha Allen came over.
"Of course not," Jackson smiled. "Happy birthday Makenna." He said before turning and walking away with his sons.
"Hello Alpha Allen." I said, smiling at him.
"Please call me Allen." He said, shaking my hand.
Adrian had wondered off earlier, making a comment about "too many alphas in one place" or something like that.
My dad walked over giving Allen a look.
"Nice to see you again Allen. How"s the pack doing?" My dad asked.
"Everyone is quite well. I brought my three boys." Allen said, gesturing to the three boys next to him.
"Where"s the fourth one?" My dad asked, looking around.
"Oh. Austin?" He asked.
My dad nodded ad Allen rubbed the back of his neck.
"He wanted to uh stay home. Look after everything for tonight." He said, glancing around nervously. The three boys that were with him all looked at each other as one of them mumbled something.
"Austins the youngest. But he"s the most responsible." Allen said.
Hearing that name gave me chills.
Austin.
There was something about it, but I couldn"t quite put my finger on it.
His name sounded safe, but I"m not sure why.
"Makenna." My dad said, snapping me out of my thoughts. "You remember Alex, Damion, and Harrison, right?"
I nodded and smiled at them.
I had met them three when I was 13, but now that I think of it I"ve never met Austin. I think he"s a year older than me. Maybe two.
I know that Alex and Damion are twins. They"re both 22 and neither of them want to be the Alpha. Harrison is 20 so he will take over whenever his dad gives it up.
Normally you"d pass the role to your child when they turn 18. But a lot of alphas now like to wait until they"re son finds his mate. My dad didn"t want to wait for that.
"How old is your other boy now?" My dad asked.
"He"s 19." Allen said.
"How"s he doing?" I asked. "I"ve never met him."
"Uh yeah. He"s doing fine. He just likes to stay home." He shrugged, looking at his watch. "Well, its a long drive home. We better get going."
I nodded and watched as he quickly left the room.
Soon after, the rest of them bid their farewells, heading back home.
Right after they all had left my dad walked up to me and shook his head.
"What did Allen say to you?" He asked.
"Not really anything before you came over." I said. "Why?"
"I don"t trust him. He"s always acted weird. Especially when you mention Austins name. I think he"s hiding something." My dad said.
"He did act strange when you mentioned him." I nodded.
"There"s been rumors amongst his pack that he beats the kid. Allen"s mate, Elizabeth, passed away giving birth to Austin. Everyone says that Allen has really changed since then. He"s become a lot more cruel and cold." My dad said, shaking his head. "But there"s been no proof of it so we can"t really do anything."
"I wouldn"t be so sure of that dad." I said.
"Happy birthday." My Mom said, walking into the room.
"Thank you Mom." I smiled.
"Makenna." She said, taking my hand in hers. "I know this is a little scary. But I believe you"ll not only be an amazing Alpha, but an amazing queen as well. Your father and I will be here to help you along the way. But you"ll do great Mak. I believe in you."
She kissed my cheek and hugged me tightly.
"You"re going to do great thi this Makenna." My dad said. "I know you can do this."
He pulled me to him and kissed my forehead.
I walked up the stairs and to my room.
"I love you guys!" I yelled before closing my door and collapsing in bed.
"Knock knock." Adrian walked in a few minutes later.
"I thought you went home." I looked up at him.
"I can"t leave yet." He said, sitting down on my bed. "I owe you your birthday present." He smiled.
I sat up and groaned.
"I told you not to get me anything." I said, playfully glaring at him.
"Well too bad." He said, shrugging at me as I rolled my eyes.
He pulled a small box out of his pocket and handed it to me.
I stared at him and he sighed, shaking his head.
"Just open it." He said, nudging me with his arm.
I sighed before taking the lid off.
I looked up at him as my mouth fell open.
"It"s beautiful." I whispered, staring at the necklace that the box held.
There was a gold wolf charm that looked like it was howling attached to a gold chain.
I carefully took it out of the box and smiled.
"Thank you Adrian." I said, looking at him.
He took the necklace from me and put it around my neck, clasping it shut.
"Look." He said, holding his wrist up.
He was wearing a bracelet with the same wolf charm on it.
I smiled even bigger and hugged him.
"You"ll be a great Alpha." He smiled. "I believe in you Makenna Rose. We all do. And I"ll be here to help you. Not only as your Beta, but as your best friend. I always will."
After about an hour of talking Adrian stood up.
"Adrian." I said.
"Yeah?" He stopped, looking back at me.
"Austin. There"s something about that name, I"m not sure what. But I need to find out." I said.
"We will Makenna. For tonight get some sleep." He said before leaving.
I sighed and flopped back, fiddling with the wolf charm as I laid there. Adrian and I have always been close. When we were about ten he used to say he hopes we"re mates, but we both know that it"s better this way. He"s my best friend and I"m happy we aren"t mates. I need him as my Beta more than I need him as an Alpha. He"s sweet and everything, but I don"t look at him in a romantic way at all, I don"t think I ever could. He"s too much like an brother to me.
Besides, we both already know we aren"t mates and we were both young when he said that. I think he"s just as happy as I am that we aren"t mates.
I laid in bed, doing what I do most nights, eating and thinking.
I think a lot about multiple different things. But tonight was different.
I couldn"t stop thinking. Especially about tonight, about Austin.
He"s special to me, I just need to find out why.
I feel like I need to protect him, even though he might not need protecting. Something seemed weird about what Allen had said tonight, about how he acted.
Whenever Austin was mentioned he got nervous. He then quickly left.
Something was definitely going on and I have to figure it out, no matter what it takes.
