We got back to my house and my dad walked out front.
"What happened?" He asked, walking over to me.
"Mate." Was all I could manage to say as I helped Austin out of the truck.
He hasn"t said a word since we left.
My dad looked at him and muttered something under his breath as I walked inside and up to my room.
"Do you have anything you need? Like clothes or something?" I asked, helping him lay down.
"No. I have nothing." He said, looking away.
"Austin." I said, sitting on the bed next to him. "I know life hasn"t treated you fairly. But you"re with me now. And I"ll make sure you"re okay. I promise. Okay?"
"Okay." He nodded, smiling softly.
I need the pack doctor to my room. I sent through the pack mind link.
"Our doctor is going to come look at you. Make sure there"s nothing majorly wrong. Is that alright?" I asked.
"Yeah. Of course." He said.
I nodded and sat there as he fell asleep.
He had blondish, almost brown hair. The most beautiful blue eyes. He looks like he works out, but that"s because of the werewolf genes.
And he"s mine.
I don"t understand why he thought I"d reject him.
I think he"s perfect. Even if he has a few flaws, they"re his flaws which makes them perfect.
I stood up when I heard a knock on the door, opening it and letting our doctor in.
"Thank you for coming here doctor Kane." I said quietly, trying not to wake Austin.
"What"s the problem?" He asked, looking over at Austin.
"He"s Allen"s son. From the Paramount Pack. He"s my mate. He"s been abused for multiple years. That"s really all I know." I said, shaking my head.
"I need his jeans and shirt taken off." He said.
I nodded slowly and walked over to him.
"Austin." I shook him. "I"m going to help you get undressed. Okay?"
He nodded as he woke up, looking around.
His eyes landed on Kane and he inhaled sharply, his eyes getting wide.
"Hey. It"s okay. He"s here to help." I assured him.
He nodded and calmed down, slowly sitting up.
I helped him take his shirt off and then his jeans.
He laid back down as Kane walked over to him.
It"s now a lot more noticeable how good looking he is.
But now I could see just how injured he was too. He had bruises up and down his arms and on his stomach. He had cuts on his face and scars all over his chest.
I growled and shook my head, stepping out of the room.
Adrian. Could you bring over some clothes. Please. I sent through the mind link.
Of course Mak. I"ll be there in a few minutes.
I thanked him as I sat on the floor, trying to calm down.
Allen did this to my mate. And I wanted to kill him.
I wanted to make him pay for the hurt he"s caused him.
But I can"t. Not right now at least.
I stood up as Adrian came up the stairs with a shirt and a pair of sweatpants.
"Here ya go." He smiled softly.
"Thank you Adrian." I said, turning back towards the door
"It"ll be okay Makenna. He"ll be okay." Adrian said.
"But what if he"s not." I whispered.
"Makenna. He"s here now. He has you now. Things will be okay. Just have a little faith." He said quietly, sitting down next to me.
"Have faith?" I looked up at him. "How can I have faith when he"s been hurt all these years while I"ve been living a great life. He"s been hurting while I"ve been getting everything I could ever want. And I"m supposed to just have a little faith?" I ran my hand through my hair, looking back at the floor.
"I"m sorry, Adrian." I whispered. "I just. I don"t know what to do about this."
"Just trust me, Mak. He will be okay. We have the best doctor in the world. Not only that, but we have a pretty great Alpha, too." He said as he stood up, nudging me with his foot. "Don"t worry too much. Just get in there and be there for him right now."
I nodded as he walked back down the stairs.
I stood up and opened the door as Kane was packing his stuff up.
"How bad?" I asked Kane quietly, glancing at Austin.
"He"ll be just fine. He needs some rest and food. But nothing broken. Just bruised and cut." He said. "But Makenna. There"s going to be emotional trauma. A lot of it. He"ll need you now more than ever."
"Do you think he"ll ever be fully okay?" I asked as we stepped out of the room.
"With your help, yes." He nodded. "But it"s going to take some time. Just be patient with him."
"Thank you." I said as he walked down the stairs and outside.
I took a deep breath before going back into my room where Austin was looking out the window.
"Here"s some clothes for you." I said, gaining his attention." The bathrooms right there. You can take a shower if you want."
I handed him the clothes and smiled softly at him.
"Thank you, Makenna." He said.
Hearing my name come out of his mouth sent shivers down my spine.
He slowly stood up and smiled softly.
"Thank you for everything." He said.
"It was my pleasure Austin." I smiled back, wrapping my arms around his waist, gently hugging him.
I heard him inhale sharply before slowly hugging me back.
I backed away and let him go take a shower.
His smell was everywhere and I loved it.
I stared at the wall as tears formed in my eyes. He has so many scars and cuts.
I should"ve gotten to him sooner.
I sat on my bed as tears fell down my face.
I could"ve helped him sooner.
"Makenna?" I looked up as he walked out of the bathroom with the clean clothes on. "What"s wrong?"
"Nothing. Don"t worry." I shook my head.
"I know I"ve been in an attic most of my life, but I do know what a mate is. And I know how to treat one. I don"t want you to cry. Talk to me. Please." He sat next to me.
"I should"ve found you sooner." I whispered.
"Makenna no one knew." He said, putting his arm around me. "Not even our pack. Don"t blame yourself. Please."
I nodded and stood up.
"I"m gonna go get some food." I said quietly before going downstairs.
I walked into the kitchen and saw my mom sitting at the counter.
"Hey sweetie. How"s it going?" She asked, looking at me.
I just shrugged as I sat down next to her.
"Come on. Talk to me." She said, smiling softly.
"He"s got so many scars, mom." I said quietly, looking at her. "So many bruises. So many cuts."
"That doesn"t make him a bad person Makenna. He"s still your mate." She said.
"I know mom. I"m not upset he has them. Well, I am. But not for those reasons." I said.
"Then what is it?" She asked.
"I wasn"t there for him." I whispered.
"But you"re here now Makenna. That"s what counts."
"No, mom." I shook my head. "He was hurt. A lot. But I wasn"t there for him. And I don"t know how to help him."
"You help him by being you." She said, wiping a tear that had fallen down my face. "He needs you right now, Makenna. You just need to be there for him. Be there whether it"s to listen to his problems, or distract him from them. He"s not okay. He isn"t going to be okay for awhile. But he"ll get through this. Especially with you by his side."
I nodded and hugged her.
I made a few sandwiches and went back up to my room.
"Do you like peanut butter and jelly?" I asked as I opened the door.
"I"ve never had them." He said quietly.
"Well they"re my favorite sandwich." I smiled, sitting on the bed next to him.
He took one off the plate and took a bite.
"They are pretty good." He nodded, smiling at me.
"I made a few of the for you." I said, holding the plate out.
"I can"t eat that much." He said, looking at me with wide eyes.
"Why not?" I asked, pulling the plate back to me.
"I"ve never really eaten more than an apple." He said quietly, looking away.
"Oh." I said.
He nodded and continued to stare at the floor.
"Austin." I said after a few minutes of silence. "I want you to know that I"m here. I know life been hard for you. But I"m here to make it easier. I"m sorry I wasn"t there before, but I"m here now. And I want to do everything I can to help."
"I have scars, Makenna." He said, looking at me with tears in his eyes. "Not only physical, but mental."
"I don"t care about that, Austin." I said, shaking my head. "I don"t care about the scars. I"ll always be here. Whether it"s to listen to your problems, or distract you from them. I don"t care about your past. What I care about is our future."
"Really?" He asked as the tears started to fall from his eyes.
"Really." I smiled, holding my pinky out.
He hooked his pinky onto mine and smiled back.
"Thank you." He said as I wiped the tears from his face.
"For what?" I asked.
"For finding me."
I took the plate back down after the sandwiches were gone.
I washed the plate and sat it in the strainer.
"So?" My dad asked, walking into the kitchen.
"So what?" I asked, looking at him.
"How is he?"
"He"s not okay." I said. "But he will be."
"That"s good." He nodded, opening the cabinet.
"What are you looking for?" I asked as I watched him rummage through the cabinets.
"Honestly?" He shut the cabinet, looking at me. "Nothing. I just wanted to be nosey and see how everything was with the boy." He chuckled.
"The boy has a name." I giggled, shaking my head. "Austin."
"Eh." He shrugged, grabbing an apple from the counter.
"Goodnight, Mak." He called over his shoulder as he left the room.
I stood there for a minute before going back upstairs.
Austin was in bed asleep already so I went into the closet and changed into my shorts and a tank top.
I slipped my running shoes on and quietly went downstairs.
I slipped out the back door and ran to the woods.
I"m not sure how long I ran, all I know is that I kept running.
I ran until I couldn"t feel my feet, until I was out of breath.
I ran until I felt okay again.
Only then did I stop, sitting against a tree.
I sat there for awhile, thinking about everything that had happened today as I tried to catch my breath.
I have my mate now.
He"s not okay yet, but he will be.
I slowly stood up before running back towards the house, this time a bit slower.
After going back to my room I looked at the time and changed into a pair of sweatpants and a tee shirt.
12:34 am.
I sighed as I grabbed a blanket, laying down on my couch.
I had started to get comfortable when I thought Austin had said something.
"Austin?" I said quietly.
He didn"t say anything so I got up, walking over to him.
He was sleeping.
I smiled softly and went back to the couch.
He looked so peacefully, like nothing had ever happened to him.
Like he wasn"t carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders anymore.
He"s going to be okay. I"m going to make sure of it. Because he"s my mate and he deserves happiness. I"m going to do my best to give it to him.
I smiled to myself before closing my eyes.
