Chapter 14 The Eye is ClosedAs though to a signal Neil jerked awake. At first he could see no reason for his waking. One moment he was deeply asleep and the next every faculty was alert. The stale darkness of the cottage was oppressive. He lifted his head and scanned the room. He heard no sound, saw no movement, yet he was convinced that something had changed. He remembered the last time he had slept in this room and how he had woken in the small hours to follow Mairi across the moors to Callanish. He sat up quickly and looked across to the wooden bed where the two young women lay.
