Chapter 4 The DreamThe village was quiet — the one muddy street deserted — when Neil finally arrived. He walked Flame quietly to the long low cottage of Mairi’s parents. Not knowing what the situation would now be, he decided he would try to attract Mairi’s mother’s attention without alerting her father to his presence. He was sure Braden’s sympathies would be more with the mob than with his daughter. He remembered a tune he had whistled the evening before. It was a tune handed down from the days of the Viking raids: a signal the islanders used as a warning or to let captured Islanders know that help was near.
