Chapter 8
The Sea CaveAt first light after a restless night Neil decided to visit Brother Durston. He had dreamt several times in the fitful intervals of sleep of the ceaseless pounding of waves against rock. It was as though the sea were hammering at his skull trying to get in. He struggled to wake each time, aware that he was dreaming even while he was asleep — almost driven to madness by the thud... thud... thud of the waves. He remembered what Mairi had said about dreams. These dreams had the same quality as the one he had had of Callanish and the tall feather-clad priest. Each time he woke he told himself it was only a dream, and each time he dozed off again he took up the dream exactly where he had escaped from it before.
