The devastating truth

1695 Words
Mateo’s POV Two Days After The Injury… The private office inside my penthouse is dead silent, save for the low, monotonous hum of the laptop screen glowing on my mahogany desk. Liam stands beside my chair, his jaw set in a hard, grim line that tells me whatever is on the USB drive in his hand isn't good. "It took some heavy financial persuasion and a direct threat from our legal team," Liam says softly, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "But I finally managed to bypass the hotel’s primary security network. My tech guy recovered the raw, unedited CCTV backup files from the night of the incident. The hotel management explicitly tried to delete these frames to protect their VIP reputation, but we got them." "Play it," I command. My chest tightens, a sudden, dark wave of impending dread washing down my spine. Liam steps forward, his fingers tapping the spacebar of the laptop. The security footage begins to play in grainy, high-definition black-and-white. The camera angle is positioned directly down the corridor outside the hotel suite. The timestamp reads exactly one month ago—the night I allegedly drank myself into an uncontrollable, animalistic fury. My eyes widen, my breath locking tight in my throat as a familiar figure appears on the screen. It isn't a hotel maid. It is Skyler . My toxic, obsessive ex-girlfriend whom I had spent the last four months desperately trying to cut out of my life. I watch the screen, my blood turning to pure ice as Skyler stands right outside my door, whispering frantically to one of the regular private bartenders. She glances around nervously before slipping him a heavy, thick white envelope of cash. Then, with a practiced, chilling calmness, she pulls a small, clear vial of liquid from her designer handbag and presses it into the bartender's palm. The man nods, hiding the vial in his apron, and walks back toward the bar setup being rolled into my room. "What... what is that?" I whisper, the words scraping against my raw throat. "Keep watching, Mateo," Liam says grimly. The footage fast-forwards. The digital timestamp skips ahead by fifty-five minutes. The screen shows Skyler returning to the hallway, flanked by a man holding a concealed professional camera—a hired paparazzi photographer. She steps up to my suite door, her hand reaching out to turn the brass handle, expecting it to swing open. But it doesn't. The heavy door is locked tightly from the inside because I had already collapsed. On the screen, Skyler 's expression twists from smug triumph to sheer, frantic panic. She bangs her fists against the wood, whispering harshly to the photographer before realizing her calculated trap has completely backfired. Fearing the hotel security guards will spot her accomplice with a camera, she turns on her heel and flees down the service elevator, leaving me entirely alone. "Wait," I murmur, squinting at the screen. "If she left because it was locked... how did the other girl get in?" "Watch the timestamp, Teo. Look at what happens ten minutes later." On the monitor, the heavy oak door of my penthouse suddenly cracks open from the inside. My stomach drops as my own figure appears on the footage. I look entirely unhinged. I am leaning heavily against the doorframe, my shirt torn open, my face contorted in an expression of absolute, terrifying distress as I look left and right down the empty hallway. The poison was already ravaging my system; I must have heard Skyler 's frantic knocking through a haze of delirium, fighting my way to the door only to find an empty corridor. Too weak to even pull the heavy wood closed behind me, I stagger backward into the shadows of the suite, leaving the door completely unlatched. Twenty minutes later, a young, slender girl in an oversized hotel uniform appears at the end of the hall, patiently pushing a room service tray. The girl with the name badge that read ANNA. I watch her knock politely. When the unlatched door drifts open under the weight of her knuckles, she hesitates, looking around before stepping inside to deliver the glass of water I had frantically dialed the front desk for right before my body gave out. She didn't know anything about Skyler . She didn't know about the drugs, or the money, or the twisted games of the elite. She was just a night-shift employee doing her job, walking straight into a living nightmare because I had left that door open. The office suddenly feels too small. I lean both hands against the desk. For several long seconds… I can't breathe. She wasn't chasing fame. She wasn't chasing money. She was just trying to save my life. I close my eyes. All I can remember is the sound of my own voice. “There's your payday.” The words make me sick. "Oh my god," I choke out, my vision blurring as a cold sweat breaks across my forehead. "What did I do? What the hell did I do to her?" She didn't abuse me. She didn't sell me out to the press. She found a famous athlete dying on a Persian rug, and instead of running away, she stayed. She saved my life. And the next morning, I woke up with my cynical, paranoid mind, threw a stack of dirty bills at her chest, called her a parasite, and watched her weep. "There's more, Teo," Liam says, his voice dropping into a register of deep pity. "The hotel management actually had no idea anything was wrong. They thought the girl who worked that night was the person registered to the badge—a woman named Anna Vance.." I look up, my chest heaving. "Then how did you find out?" "I ran a background check on Anna Vance myself," Liam explains, tapping his leather notepad. "The real Anna Vance isn't a hotelier or a housekeeper. She is a registered nurse at Cooperswell General Hospital. When my security team tracked her down and interrogated her, she broke down and confessed. She had been secretly letting a desperate, broke girl pull her hotel night shifts under the table because the girl needed quick, untraceable cash to pay for her grandmother's intensive care bills." My heart drops into a cold, bottomless abyss. "And where is she now, Liam? Where is the girl?" "The hospital discovered the illegal shift-swapping after our inquiry and fired Anna Vance on the spot. We tried to trace the girl through the hospital's patient logs for the grandmother... but we were too late. The grandmother, Victoria Jacob, passed away that very night. The hospital records list the girl as the primary caregiver and next of kin, but she signed everything under her grandmother's surname to keep the billing off the grid. The corporate files only have her real first initial. An 'R'." Liam pauses, taking a heavy breath. "By the time my men got to their registered apartment address in hospital, the neighbors said the granddaughter had already packed a single suitcase, took Victoria's ashes, and completely vanished into thin air. She cut her phone line, deleted her socials, and erased her own existence. She left no forwarding address, no bank details, nothing." An 'R.' A girl whose name starts with 'R,' whose grandmother died the exact night I destroyed her innocence. She was grieving, lost, and entirely vulnerable, and I took advantage of her deepest tragedy. I stripped her of her dignity and her final, sacred moments with the only family member she had left in this world—all because my arrogant, celebrity pride couldn't see past my own face. She saved my life, and in return, I destroyed hers. "Liam," I whisper, my voice dropping so low it barely carries across the desk. I don't look at him. I can't take my eyes off her grainy silhouette on the monitor. "Call our legal team. Now." Liam stabilizes his posture, sensing the shift in the air. "For the search?" "No. For Skyler ." A cold, venomous calm settles over the frantic panic in my chest. "I don't want the public to know about the drugs or anything that happened in that room. If the media starts digging into what Skyler used on me, the press will turn it into a circus and destroy my career anyway. We handle this in the dark. I want her life dismantled quietly, without her ever knowing what happened or who is behind it. Strip her family of their high-society connections, blacklist her from every endorsement contract in this country, and target her assets. Make her a pariah by midnight, and let her think she got away with it while her world collapses around her." "Consider it done, Mateo. And what about... the girl?" I slowly close the laptop screen, cutting off the black-and-white footage, plunging the office into a deeper shadow. "She didn't want my money, Liam. She didn't want a settlement. She took her grandmother's ashes and fled because I made the city toxic to her very breath." I look down at my hands, the same hands that had thrown cash at a girl who had just kept my heart beating. "I thought I was searching for her to protect my reputation. To stop a scandal." I let out a harsh, broken laugh that tears at my throat. "But there is no scandal coming. She just wants to forget I exist. I don't deserve her forgiveness... but I am going to spend every single dollar I possess to track her down anyway. Hire the best trackers in the country. We search every square inch of Cooperswell, and if she's not there, we search every single town beyond it. Not to buy her silence. But to make sure she is safe from the storm I put her in." I lean back against the cushions, staring out at the blurred grey skyline. The leg brace locks my knee in place, an artificial cage, but my mind is already burning through the rain-soaked streets of Cooperswell. She saved a monster. And now, the monster has to find a way to become a man.
