Chapter7 Trade

1604 Words
The hunting was ended with displeasure. Elektra was the last one returning to the manor. In the hall, Wendy who had experienced another assassination, was still in a trance. When she saw Elektra coming over, her empty eyes started to brim with life. She fixed her eyes on Elektra but did not speak. Elektra walked past, broke in a circle of people around Wendy. She saw a silver-haired old man dressing Wendy’s wound. He must be the family doctor to Abel. “How is she?” Elektra asked, stooping to look at the old man who seemed somewhat perplexed, “I am Miss Evans’ bodyguard.” The old man immediately displayed an expression of understanding. He then pointed at Wendy's swollen ankle and said, “Fortunately no fracture. Just a soft tissue contusion. It must have been accidentally twisted when she jumped from a height. Nothing serious.” Elektra looked at the swollen feet and frowned. Wendy's disgruntled voice could be heard from above. She was dissatisfied with Abel’s doctor, “So only a fracture can be called a big problem eh? Mr. Hill's doctor is just as interesting as his manor.” Elektra didn’t know what to say about her temper. She was embarrassed, and looked toward the doctor. He did not seem to care at all. He just concentrated on treating Wendy’s wound. “How did this happen?” Elektra asked. Wendy raised her chin angrily. “Ask him. I told him that I can't jump that high. Yet he insisted on throwing me off. So, he really wasn't sent by Mark Evans to kill me?” That's when Elektra remembered Vincent. She looked in the direction of Wendy's chin. Her intended scolding seemed irrelevant when she spotted a large splatter of blood in front of her eyes. Vincent turned his back to them, pulled off his shirt. The bruised back and fleshy shoulder blades were revealed. The bullet must have gone through his back. It was taken out, but there was no time to bandage it. He held it down with a thick gauze, still trying to stop the bleeding. Wendy’s ankle sprain was nothing when compared with Vincent injury… “Where is Mr Evans?” Elektra looked around. She didn’t find Mark and Abel. “Mr Evans went back to Manhattan first.” The clear male voice was ice-cold, like the weather of New York in March - blows the heart cold. Elektra glanced at Wendy. She sneered. It hasn’t been a day or two that Mark doesn’t care about her life. After all, what he would like to use his daughter for has always been resources in exchange for Abel Hill. Like a piece of her heart was pinched, Elektra felt a little sour and swell. She went to sit by Wendy, reaching her hand to hold two of her fingers. * The two spent their night at Abel’s manor in New Jersey. On the next day Vito had to send Wendy back to Manhattan early in the morning. Elektra followed her down the steps when she learned that Abel didn’t intend to let her go back. It was the silver-haired doctor whom she had seen the day before came to meet her. He gave Elektra with a warm smile. "Miss Garner,” he introduced himself in a kinda poor accent, “My name is Bates. I'm Mr. Hill's family doctor. I live here to help Mr. Hill take care of the house when I'm less busy. You can always turn to me if you need anything from now." Elektra was astounded, looking back at Wendy who was standing downstairs. Vito seems to have told her of Abel's decision. They showed a business like look. Wendy was very calm, and looked over expressionless. Elektra knew it was impossible for Wendy to say no to Abel’s arrangements. “I just went to help him with Nano,” Elektra said, walking over to comfort her. Wendy looked at her and shrugged. “Whatever. I'm easier without you keeping an eye on me for my dad.” Despite patent loneliness and displeasure on her face, Wendy still held her chin high. She was just as proud as a peacock. She stiffened her neck and said indifferently, “Anyway, I've exchanged you with Abel for a future redeemable condition.” “What?” Elektra stunned. The woman in front of her pouted her lips. “Every man for himself. Besides, I'm quite curious about how my dad would react if he knew that Abel borrowed you. Would he die of anger on the spot?” “...” Elektra choked to death. The young lady's pride was untouchable, Wendy grunted, “In our contract, it's written in back and white: You're mine. Henceforth you go to help Abel. Don’t forget who is your boss. Or I’ll go to the State Court to sue you! And sell you to somebody else to pay your debts.” “OK.” Elektra nodded and said no more. The helicopter took off. There was a sudden gust of wind. Until the chopper could no longer be seen, Elektra turned around to look at Bates who had been waiting behind for a long time. He stepped aside, and led the way for Elektra, “Mr. Hill is waiting for you in the study.” Elektra nodded and followed. They walked down a long corridor on the second floor to two retro look walnut doors ajar. Bates knocked on the door, “Mr Hill, Miss Garner is waiting outside.” There was no movement inside for a long time. Bates turned around and looked at Elektra. He seemed a little embarrassed. Just as he was about to knock again, there came a faint “Eh” from inside. The voice was low, as if it had been an utterance straight from the lung. Bates turned around and smiled at her. He reached out, pushing the door in front of Elektra. She walked in. A large living room was revealed - whitewashed, decorated with teak furniture, which was very elegant. There was a French window on the front, reflecting the sunset on the Atlantic seashore. The sea breeze waltzed through the hall, rhapsodizing the curtains into dancing and flourishing. Abel stood in the white yarn and afterglow, holding a glass of iced whiskey. He was wearing a white shirt and tie, but was in lazy and casual style. A pair of sleeves rolled up to the elbow, exposing the strong forearm. But whenever he was, that pair of slender hands were always wrapped in a pair of black gloves. Behind Elektra, Bates closed the door and left. She stood still, and did not say anything until Abel pointed to the sofa in front of her. Elektra walked over and sat down. Abel handed her a glass of whisky. “I don't drink.” Her tone was flat. Abel did not show any displeasure of the curt brush-off. He put down his glass, and pulled a folder from the cupboard behind him. He opened it. “In two weeks, Senator Murphy will be hosting a donors' dinner at his Wainscott Villa.” He put the folder on the coffee table in front of him, and handed it to Elektra, “Take this opportunity.” Elektra frowned, picked it up and scanned. Wainscott is a small coastal town, with more than two hours' drive from New York. There are many private villas of the rich and the super-rich due to its high privacy. Recently almost every year, there were Latino women drowned near the shore. If the guess was correct, that's where Murphy chose to dump the body. “OK.” Elektra agreed. Abel showed no facial expression. He leaned over, turned the file to another page. “To ensure that the plan goes smoothly, you will stay here for the next two weeks. Your activities will be restricted to the manor.” After saying that, Abel reached out his hand to Elektra. “Cell phone.” Elektra stunned. Abel continued, “There are telephones in the manor. And your room is equipped with a computer." Apparently it was meant to cut her off from the outside world. And surely it was the only way that she could not contact Nano or Murphy. He still suspected her identity. So it was a better policy to drive her to the corner and get Elektra to do what he wanted. Perceiving what he was thinking, Elektra fished out the mobile phone from her pocket and put it on Abel’s hand. “Over the next two weeks, you're going to learn mixed martial arts,” said he, putting her phone aside and flipping through the files. “No,” Elektra interrupted. “I know how to fight.” As if it were an illusion, she heard Abel sneer. He looked up at her with a teasing look in the eyes. “Miss Garner...” Abel slowed his speech and enunciated, “you seriously think you know how to fight?” Elektra choked with her words and stopped arguing. Two rounds of close-range fighting with the same record of knockout within three seconds, made Elektra turn “yes” into a stone, too heavy to be spat out. She grudgingly said, “I’m going to steal things, not to fight.” Abel ignored her. He closed the folder calmly, as if did not hear her words. Elektra felt somewhat being humiliated. She got up and was about to leave, but the voice behind stopped her. “Change your clothes. I'll wait for you in the ring.”
