“Click!”
The response was a sound of a loaded gun.
Abel turned around. Their sight came through the storm, met in the smoky air.
No wonder Vito couldn’t find her. It turned out that she was pulling a Houdini act with him.
Abel's cold sight shifted from her muddy feet to the long wavy hair. He frowned and was surprised find that she was able to make hunting outfit elegant and charming.
Vito rushed up with his men right in time.
The gunners swarmed in and surrounded Elektra at lightning speed.
With the ice-cold sound of guns being loaded, the place was filled with hurried footsteps. The atmosphere became tense all of a sudden.
Everyone held their breath.
Abel put down the gun in his hand and took off the earplugs.
He stood still. With his back straight, the ruthless nature of his was not affected by Elektra's sudden intrusion.
“You don’t really think you'll get out of here alive, just because I'm your hostage, do you?” He looked down, with a little nonchalance in his tone.
Of course Elektra could not be so naive.
Even if she could get away with it today, Elektra would never make it in New York alive in view of Navoi's power in the city.
So from the beginning to point a gun to Abel, her plan was not to blackmail him into letting her be free. Quite otherwise as a matter of fact it was:
“I want to make a deal with Mr.Hill.”
Her cool voice was soft, with a firmness that could not be ignored.
“I know I can't escape today, no matter what. So there are two paths in front of me.”
As she spoke, Elektra slid the gun from his chest to his forehead.
“First, kill Mr. Hill and I'll be buried alongside. Second...”
Elektra’s eyes became razor-sharp, looking straight in the face of the man standing in front, “Allow me to earn myself a chance to explain by the death of Mr Hill.”
Abel turned round, with the look of his eyes becoming darker.
Whether or not she was too daring in doing so, he had to admit that it was a smart move of hers.
She knew his mind, and she knew her own bargain chip. She was absolutely resourceful.
He suddenly became a little interested in her so-called transaction and wanted to hear more.
“The reason for Mr Hill’s direction of this stunt today, I think, is because you suspected that I was Nano's mole, right?”
Abel was silent for a while, which is a sign of nodding.
Elektra continued, “I can prove that I am not.”
“You think I care?”
What an indifference! Elektra was rendered speechless.
He really didn't care, so he even didn't bother to prove it. Today's arrangement was the last face to save because of his cooperation with Mark Evans.
All he wanted from start to finish was to have Wendy marry him without causing any trouble.
If she could survive by proving her innocence in the past, now with her open challenge to Abel Hill's authority in front of so many people, she would definitely die, no matter she was a mole or not.
But in order to be alive, it is not enough for her to only rely on the innocence.
“I can help you remove the Nano family.”
The man's eyelashes half drooped, covering the brilliance in his eyes, making him look very indifferent, as if he was not interested in her proposal.
Elektra did not hesitate.
“The reason why Nano has been able to rise in New York is that they are backed by one of the New York Senators, Stephen Murphy...”
“You think I am ignorant of this?” Abel interrupted her.
Elektra paused, then continued.
“Eight years ago, when Murphy was a New York City congressman, he was investigated for being involved in a date-r**e scandal of a Latino girl under 16. Unfortunately, the evidence pointed to an Italian named Laverty. And he admitted to the crime. So the police finally nailed Laverty, and the case was closed.”
Abel frowned.
“That man, Laverty, is a member of Nano family. He died suddenly in prison. Since then, the Nano family has been involved in more than a dozen of the city's most violent crimes against women. But the weird thing is almost every victim has black eyes.”
“Well,” the male voice was deep, cold and slow, “Even if your conjecture is right, how are you going to prove that?”
“As far as I know, Murphy has never touched the same victim twice. And in view of the frequency of the murders, I suspect he may be a collector of black-eyed women.”
Seeing Abel's sinking reaction, Elektra explained, “Such people often record their crimes, in order to satisfy their hobby of collecting. So as long as I can get close to him, it is highly likely to find evidence.”
“You are going to look for the evidence?” Asked Abel.
Elektra nodded.
Abel stared at her. This time, his eyes were full of wonder, “Why you?”
“Because it can only be me,” Elektra said, “I have black eyes, I have the skills, I'm smart enough, and with guts. Last but not least...”
She continued, “Your life is in my hands. Your agreement to my suggestion is surely a win-win.”
This being said, Elektra keenly aware of Abel’s uneasiness. The dark eyes raise a storm. With her high-handed tone, Elektra felt that she might rough his feathers.
But not until she figured out the reason, Elektra saw a white flash, and at the same time a smarting pain hit her wrist.
“Bang!”
The bullet was fired, but missed.
The trunk of the tree was shot through. The leaves tumbled down.
A powerful force suddenly approached. Elektra felt a tight pull - her hand had been hurled by Abel to the side of the stone wall.
The pistol fell off. The back struck a hard stuff. The pain followed the cold sweat to attack her whole body.
Abel's hand went up to her throat. His cold gloves opened wide like a snake biting her neck.
With his body blocking in front of Elektra, Abel looked down at her.
“You're wrong, Miss Garner,” he said in a low voice.
“My life has never been in the hands of others, and I don't accept any cooperation under duress either.”
Breathing was compressed; the stifling air was palpable.
Her mind went blank. Gunshots were echoing in her ears. Suddenly, the touch of blood on her hands was real and distinct.
Electra attempted to calm down. When confronting such an opponent, she understood any slightest slip-up would let her die.
Unexpectedly, the hand on the neck quivered slightly, as if it was an illusion.
Elektra looked up silently and saw the storm in Abel's eyes had quietened down a little. After the cold was gone, came forth a little trance from it.
A sense of déjà vu. from her eyes, Abel saw the deceased that could not come up elsewhere.
"I'll give you one last chance."
After a long while, he suddenly opened his mouth. But his voice was no longer as cold as before, "Think carefully about what you want to say."
Elektra was cornered by the phrase.
From Abel's reaction, he should be interested in her proposal. Or she would not be alive by now.
So the question is, why?
Why does he give up to work with her.
She can't trade his life for hers. But Abel doesn't take any threat or whatever either.
So what's left of her?
Are all these just enough for Abel to drop off his guard and cooperate with her of his own accord?
Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock...
The sounds of the mechanical watch on Abel's wrist seemed to have coincided with her heartbeat now, quite nerve-wracking.
Suddenly it dawned upon Elektra.
Abel Hill couldn’t have checked her before he started.
He might have found nothing, otherwise he wouldn't have given her a chance to explain.
But as a man who lives in the midst of war and deception, Abel must have a flair to detect lies.
In that case...
Better take advantage of a disadvantage - truth mingled with lies could be more convincing sometimes.
Elektra raised her head. They had eye contact: frank and firm.
"Mr Hill," she said through the gritted teeth, "Your suspicions are right. I've been in the industry for less than two years, and I have an ulterior motive for getting close to Miss Evans..."
These words exploded like thunder, every word clanging.
All the people don't dare to make a sound, only carefully pay attention to Abel.
But he did not show the anger of being deceived. As the fog gray eyes were slightly squinting, his facial expression was not supposed to be interpreted.
Elektra took a deep breath and finally exhaled, "I did it for revenge."
"My relative was killed in Little Italy a few years ago, in a shoot-out by the Nano family. Because there was no evidence, the police couldn't file a case. The murderer got away with it. I had no choice but to resort to external force."
"Miss Evans is my stepping stone. And you, Mr Hill," Elektra looked at him and said indignantly, "You are the external force I have to borrow.”
As soon as this word came out, the already quiet atmosphere dropped dead, almost to the freezing point immediately.
Perhaps no one would have thought that a woman, facing an enemy many times more powerful than herself, standing on the edge of a precipice, would give her own defense to voice - I'm gonna use you.
Darn honest and straightforward.
Gently, a burst of dull laughter came, cutting through the frozen air.
Elektra felt the tremor in her chest, as Abel's body was almost close to hers.
The hands around her neck loosened and she was finally able to breathe. Elektra noticed the
weakness from her limbs. She couldn’t help but fell to the wall against her back.
“Remember."
Her face was picked up again by the cold gloves. Abel look at her, and continued: "This is what I call ‘the cooperation’.”
With the same motivation, and the equal level of ability.
He offered no shelter, nor could be blackmailed into doing anything.
A servant was surely not what he asked for, and he didn’t stand a threat either.
What he wanted was a close ally.
Only such a person was qualified to stand in front of him talking about cooperation with him.
“Boss!” Vito ran up behind him with a look of indignation.
“Are you really going to let her go just like that?”
“Or?” Abel turned around coldly, with a look sharp enough to cut Vito alive.
“...” Vito rubbed his neck and shut up.
There was the sound of rain washing everything away. The wind whipping up miscanthus, black hairs; the windbreaker flying in the swirl of storm.
“Continue to check her.” Abel added, with a stomp before stepping out.
He looked back at the high rock where he had been ambushed.
The heavy rain was fogging up the air, and nothing could be visible now.
Abel frowned and squeezed the fingers that had touched Elektra’s neck.
He suddenly noticed that on right side of her neck, there was a port-wine stain as red as ruby.
