Without a word, Mark raised his hand and slapped Wendy in front of everyone.
The blow was heavy. Wendy stumbled, and fell straight into the shallows.
All the people were stunned. Mark didn’t get it over. But before his foot touching Wendy, he was stopped by Elektra.
“Mr. Evans,” her tone was calm.
Elektra looked up at Abel, who stayed out of the matter from the beginning, then reminded Mark.
Thinking of the family reputation, and of a quarrel between father and daughter being not something glorious after all, Mark gritted his teeth angrily and stopped.
Abel was completely unaffected. He didn't even look at them, just put away the gun and was off with Vito.
Mark followed.
They faded off. Soon there were only Elektra and Wendy in the empty Valley.
The atmosphere was a little oppressive.
Elektra didn’t speak. She went over to drag Wendy up. Wendy didn’t cooperate and pushed her a bit. Elektra ran out of patience. She grasped Wendy’s wrist backward, gave her a twist, then dragged her out to the shore.
“Let go of me! Let Go! Umm...”
Elektra threw her to the ground, then looked at her coldly.
“f**k off!” Wendy threw a temper at Elektra, and took a stone to hit her.
Elektra stood still, silent for a moment.
She then crouched down to look at her, “I do not serve Mr. Evans. Following you is only part of my job. Your hatred to Mr Evans is your business. You can hate anyone Miss Evans, but you shouldn't hate the whole world for it. You shouldn't make yourself a laughingstock because of it.”
She was not good at comforting others. Those words were the best she could do.
Seeing that Wendy restored her mood stabilized finally, Elektra began to check her injuries.
There was a red patch on the ankle, which must have been scratched when she fell down just now. The wounded skin was bleeding. Elektra was not sure whether there was any soft tissue being injured.
“Can you move?” Elektra asked.
Wendy tried to lift her feet, but soon withered away again and bit her teeth tightly.
“Hurt?” Elektra gently touched her ankle, but only in exchange for a burst of hissing pain.
It hurt for sure.
Elektra looked around. Abel and Mark have gone far. She could not carry Wendy back.
Fortunately, this forest is Abel's private paddock. There’re no wild animals to be worried about.
Elektra decided to leave Wendy here and went back to get help.
March in New Jersey was still cold, let alone in the forest valley.
Elektra gave her dry clothes to Wendy, carried her stuff and left. It began to develop a tendency to rain, immediately after she left.
If it rained, there’d soon be floods in the valley. With injuries on her foot, it was inconvenient for Wendy. Staying on the bank could be a potential danger, and Wendy didn’t have a thing to shelter her from the rain either.
Thinking of these, Elektra decided to leave her equipments to Wendy. She turned around and went back again.
Oddly enough there was only the empty river valley, without a single soul.
Elektra found the place where Wendy used to be - only a string of water footprints.
She's...?
Her nerves suddenly became tense - Elektra almost immediately knew that Wendy was faking injury to fool her deliberately.
“What Mark Evans gave you, I'll double it. You help me kill him.”
Elektra recalled the sentence Wendy said in her apartment, jokingly in a sense though. A cold sweat broke in creeping on her back.
The forest was dense, and she got a gun!
Without further delay, Elektra unloaded her excess equipments, took her compass and gun, then picked up Wendy’s trails to track down.
As soon as the grass were replaced by the higher bush, the trace left by Wendy was hardly recognizable.
Behind her came the rustling sound of footsteps. Elektra lowered herself, hiding under the bush.
A few men with guns seemed to be tracking something. They had earphones on their head, and scattered away after a short chat.
Elektra frowned with the heart almost jumped in her throat.
While on the other side, Abel Hill had already waited for a long time.
He stood at the high point of the hunting ground, bent over and set up the R11 sniper rifle.
"Found her?" He asked.
With the black gloves pressing the intercom headphones, Abel put earplugs in his ear.
A moment later after a positive answer from the other end, Abel raised his arm, then pressed his side face on the barrel.
*
“Wendy Evans!"
The moment she saw her, Elektra almost burst into anger.
As expected, after Wendy sent her away, she tracked Mark Evans secretly with a gun.
Wendy fancied heading into the forest like a hare. The dense branches soon buried her figure.
Elektra bit her teeth tightly and followed up.She ran much faster than Wendy.
As soon as she was close enough to her, Electra threw herself forward, holding Wendy firmly down on the ground.
"Ouch. Let go of me!" Wendy struggled to break loose madly.
“Bang!”
A muffled noise burst behind them.
The sound was not loud - like someone had fired a shot under a quilt.
Wendy was stupefied and did not move any more. At the same time, they turned around and found the spark on the oak tree not far away.
Someone shot them in the back?
And it seems that the owner of the gun even put on a silencer to protect his location.
Not until Elektra figured it out, there were more voices coming towards them.
Through their occasional chat, Elektra noticed that they were trying to identify their target’s direction.
It was the clear Italian accent that told Elektra that they were Mafia guys.
But isn't this Abel's turf?
Is there a mafia family in New York who dares to provoke him in his place?
The more Elektra thought about it, the more she felt strange. She pulled Wendy up with one hand and said in a low voice, “Follow me.”
Then she led her to evacuate towards the valley under the cover of a rock.
“Snap!” A crispy sound of broken branches.
Elektra turned around, only to find that Wendy stood still. Later, she seemed to notice it. With her foot a step away, a broken branch was revealed.
“...” Elektra was speechless.
But there was no time to complain, for soon someone has stopped their way.
The Man was in fighting outfit, tall and strong, Elektra never saw him before.
Both of them stunned.
In a fraction of a second, he drew his gun on Elektra. She rolled to the side. The bullet scratched her arm hitting the rock behind. Sharp pieces suddenly flew everywhere.
The man did not badger Elektra, but pointed his gun directly at Wendy.
“Lie down!” Elektra roared.
With a leap, she almost flew from the ground. Legs wrapped around the man's neck.
Tighten up, turn around, get down on one knee!
“c***k!”
Her action was neat and clean. With her clothes spreading out, she looked like a butterfly fluttering its wings.
“Umm...” the man groaned a bit and fainted.
Wendy sat against the rock, her arms clasping round her knees. She was shocked to find the man falling down in front of her.
At the same moment, a little red spot blipped quietly between her eyebrows.
Elektra was startled.
It's too late.
Whether she pounced on, or reminded Wendy to dodge …
It's too too late.
“Bang!!!”
A violent tremor were vibrating ears - there were white lights flashing in front of Elektra’s eyes.
The expected plasma splashing did not come, but Wendy cried out loud.
And then there was a muffled male voice.
Elektra shook her head, seeing a man in the same fighting outfit.
It's Vincent.
"Go!"
It’s too urgent to ask the whys and wherefores. Vincent protected Wendy and rushed ahead. Elektra picked up the man's gun, covering them at rear.
They avoided the shooting area and hid behind the back of the rock.
Fortunately, the fight was quick and didn't make too much noise. So it took a while for the people following them to find them.
But everything was so weird.
Elektra was wondering how many forces are involved in this chaotic situation.
But at least there’s one thing which was certain.
She closed her eyes and thought about the two bullets that had almost hit Wendy.
From where the bullet landed and its mark, Elektra could probably deduce the location of the ambush.
Turning back, she found the clues.
If her guess was right, the man should have ambushed from behind the rock in the higher position.
She looked up at the hillside from the point where the gun could be mounted. A cold light gleamed in the twilight.
It's a scope!
Sure enough, in this sudden attack today, there was a snake hiding in the dark.
“Take it!” Elektra felt a chill and handed her gun to Vincent.
“You know how to use it?” She asked with a serious expression.
Vincent nodded, took the gun, loaded it skillfully and calmly.
“You stay here to protect her,” Elektra pointed to Wendy who was reluctant to cooperate, checking around quickly at the same time.
“I’ll have a look.”
Without looking back, Elektra rushed out.
The rain was finally pouring down with a vengence.
In the higher place, Abel pushed the branches aside and pressed the walkie-talkie on his left ear, “Where is she?”
The voice sounded cold and heavy. It could give anyone a chill down his spine.
Vito stuttered, looking at the bush and groves beaten by the rain, hesitant with an honest response, “We’re still, still searching...”
The earphones were so quiet that only a faint electric current could be heard. It was like a small insect gnawing at his ears.
Vito loosened his collar anxiously and slowed down his breathing.
The atmosphere froze. A dull clattering sound could be vaguely heard.
It’s the sign of Abel’s running out of patience.
"Easy, boss," Vito coughed.
“There are full of our people. They'll never escape..."He reported mechanically, could not help but turn around, secretly to the direction of Abel Hill.
But this quick look of his instantly shattered the fantasy of finding Elektra to make up the mistakes.
Vito's vision stopped suddenly. He suddenly noticed somewhere behind Abel.
Words stuck in his throat.
Abel, of course, noticed Vito’s anomaly. But it was too late for him to turn around.
The woman's steps were as light as feline walk, completely engulfed by the noise of the rain.
Abel was wearing earplugs and a Bluetooth earphones. He focused on the scope and Vito so attentively that he didn't notice the approaching young lady.
The night of their first meeting flashbacked: the cold moonlight, a pair of indifferent but unyielding eyes…
She stared at him coldly, like a wild rose blooming out of the heavy fog, bright and gorgeous.
The hand gripping the R11 tightened, and the gloves rustled the barrel.
Even if not turning around, at this moment, Abel somehow immediately knew who is the owner of the cold barrel.
For ten years now, from Moscow to New York, she was the only one who could walk here and put a gun to his head.
Suddenly a dull laughter rolled over. Abel put down the gun in his hand, and called her calmly,
“Miss Garner?”
