Chapter4 Banquet
On a private paddock in New Jersey, a tall, strong man was in full hunting wear.
The sun was casting a long shadow over the meadow - a shotgun, which was held high on his arm, was sliding swiftly.
"Bang Bang!"
Along with the deafening bangs, two red fumes of smoke spread in the air, fast and accurate.
Vito was amazed with admiration and shuddered at the thought of his boss' marksmanship when he’d been with the cruise director a few days earlier.
"What’s he up to again?" asked Abel, raising a question first off.
The two disc targets were flying through the air at the same time from different directions.
“Bang Bang!”
Hit again, no miss.
Vito rubbed his ear, which still had ear pain and numbness from the shock. He walked over to Abel and answered, “The banquet to celebrate the Wings Group's collaboration with us has been arranged. Everything done precisely as per your instructions.”
Abel grunted and threw the gun to Vito.
As the sun shed the light on the private plane in the distance, silver wings glittered white like dagger blades.
He silently tightened the bandage on his arm. The edge of the metal buckle went across the gloves, leaving a faint trace.
“What happened on the cruise ship and in the apartment was beyond the pale. That’ll be the last.”
He turned, took another new rifle from the waiter, and loaded the gun.
Vito followed him quietly with a pale face, promising in a low voice, “No worries, boss. I'll take care of it, and report back to you.”
“Report?” Abel stopped, “Moles are always handled by me, you forgot?”
“But Mr. Evans...” Vito hesitated.
He knew that Abel hated to be betrayed. So he always dealt with traitors personally.
But if Marks Evans was involved, everything would become very troublesome. He thought Abel would therefore break the rules he set for this time.
“Just distract him.”
Abel raised the gun and commanded, “In addition, prepare my sniper rifle.”
Lock and load.
“Bang!”
The cork popped out of bottle. The muffled sound mixed with fresh fruit aroma.
Elektra looked at Wendy who was sitting on the ground - she had stayed drunk for three days, sighing and groaning.
Abel Hill did not hesitate. After the engagement party, he officially locked them both in the apartment. Apart from the housekeeper who delivered food and cleaned the room every day, they were actually bereft of right to go out and shop.
Wendy was kept busy for a few days. She finally became tired. She accepted the reality, and turned to drink to drown her sorrows.
Elektra couldn’t bear it anymore.
She reached out and took the bottle from her hands, saying softly, “Get your bloody self together.”
Wendy lifted the corner of her mouth mockingly. Without saying a word, she leaned forward to get another bottle of wine.
The phone on the table lighted up. Someone’s name was popping up the screen.
Elektra saw that it was Mrs. Evans' call.
As Wendy held the champagne in pause, her expression froze for a moment. She then picked up the phone and went away.
Taking advantage of this moment, Elektra grabbed the lighter hidden in the cabinet, and went toward the roof terrace.
She’d been waiting to hear from Mylan these days, and would always feel unsettled.
A few seconds after the card was installed, a small red dot popped up in the mailbox.
Elektra opened it and found that Mylan finally sent the information of Nano.
She didn’t know when Abel would test her again. Time was pressing.
She looked behind, making sure that no one was there. Then she opened the file, read ten lines at a glance to browse through.
At this time the sound of footsteps was heard from the stairs - Wendy again.
Elektra had to quickly take out the communication card, and slipped it into the lighter cover.
Zap! The fire started, and she lit a cigarette.
Wendy said nothing.
She just stood and looked at her for a while. Her eyes fell on the cell phone that she had turned off, and on the cigarette that she had just lit, with an incomprehensible sense of mockery.
“What?” Elektra turned to her, with a calm tone.
Wendy pouted and handed the mobile phone to her, “There is a banquet tomorrow set in Abel Hill’s manor. You better accompany me there.”
“OK.” Elektra nodded.
Wendy began to complain, “And there’ll be a hunting after the banquet. Don’t forget to ask Vito to send two sets of hunting equipment.”
*
Next morning Elektra accompanied Wendy on the private plane to New Jersey.
It was sunny after the rain. There was a rainbow on the horizon, dazzling and fabulous.
The plane stopped at a huge seaside manor. It was an old-fashioned colonial Victorian building with a special helipad on its back.
It was said that the two hills behind it were the property of Abel Hill. The sunny side was a winery, and the other side was used for hunting pleasure.
The banquet was held on the estate.
Wendy wore a tight-fitting fishtail gown tonight.
Deep V backless design, bright and invitingly red, with her shaggy hair and retro red lips makeup. She stole the show in the Lion City Celebrity Circle.
Vito was already waiting down stairs. When he saw Elektra following Wendy, he frowned and didn’t look very friendly.
For the sake of the occasion and the escort, the bodyguard sometimes needs to be slightly groomed to meet the requirements of the banquet. Elektra was forced to give her support, and had a light makeup.
Catty eyes were the highlighted feline beauty - heroic, charming but lethal.
Soft vs rigid, bright against shadowy, she and Wendy were truly the eye candy duo in the ballroom.
They followed Vito into the manor, where a faint baroque chamber music wafted from French windows. The feast had started now.
At the end of a long corridor, the two doors of the drawing room were pushed open: bright music, aromatic smell of Champagne and whiskey, and the crystal chandelier overhead, which refracted countless spots of light…
It’s the sheer hedonism that makes you drunk.
Elektra promptly recalled this phrase.
Almost all the invitees arrived, with the key figures from Navoi and Wings. The media participants were co-located in the outfield.
Wendy put on her poker face from the beginning and refused to cooperate with the media guys’ photographic work. She went straight through the guests to her seat and sat down.
“Mr Evans is over there.” Elektra walked over to remind her, and pointed to the media interview area at the entrance.
“Yeah,” Wendy said perfunctorily, not even looking back.
Mark Evans noticed her. He declined the media and came over.
“Where's Mr Hill?”
They didn’t t see each other for months, but the first question from Mark was about someone else.
Wendy smiled. “Don’t you think it’s better to make a phone call yourself, instead of asking me?”
Mark’s face sank visibly.
They were still in public. Mark couldn’t overreact, but only turned to Elektra angrily, throwing a tantrum, “Why the hell you’re always late for everything, eh? You are busier than me?”
“How can I?” Wendy continued, “Mr. Evans is busy with business, personal matters, rolling two beds at one night. How can I be busier than you?”
Mark Evans was so angry that he lost his breath at once. Before a slap on Wendy’s face, a tall figure from the side of the three crouched down.
"Mr. Evans," the man said in a clear and gentle voice, "Mr. Hill's plane has arrived. He’s coming right away."
Elektra looked up, and saw the man behind Mark Evans.
A typical Oriental look, delicate and white, with a pair of frame glasses, gentleman-like, but the physiognomy is clean and neat.
Mark Evans calmed down a little.
He turned away with a straight face, and introduced, "This is the Director of the Legal Department of Wings' New York branch, Vincent."
"Getting to know each other, all right?" he said, looking at Wendy with a commanding tone.
“Nice to meet you. Just call me Vincent.” The man reached out his hand.
Wendy ignored him. The atmosphere was suddenly embarrassing.
Standing next to her, Elektra had to reach out to save everyone’s skin.
After nodding and smiling, they knew a thing or two about each other.
There was a commotion in the crowd.
The lights dimmed and the music faded. Amid the applause and the limelight, the man walked calmly to the front desk.
Abel Hill was dressed in a white shirt and black suit. With a dark gray waistcoat, he looked broad and slim, very stylish. There was not a sign of sinister which could be found in him at all, completely different from that night in the apartment.
But wherever he was, he seemed to be stingy with any expression on that handsome face of his.
Even with so majestic a look, he was still an ice sculpture without any emotion.
The party didn't last long.
The two protagonists gave speeches and answered the questions by the attending media procedurally. With guests dispersing one after another, the ceremony was over.
What remained was the private affairs of the two families.
Elektra followed Wendy and put on her hunting clothes. In a distance from the manor, about one kilometer away to the estuary, they met Mark Evans and Abel Hill.
Armed with their gear and bodyguards, they set off into the forest.
Abel Hill led the team in front all the way, barely spoke a word.
The atmosphere between Mark and Wendy was also weird. A line of people walked silently.
Suddenly, a dark red burst into view at the mouth of the river: a fawn.
Probably not experiencing this species of intruders before, the fawn was more curious about the group of people instead of being afraid. When it heard the footsteps, it just stood with his head sideways and looked at them.
Abel Hill raised his gun.
Bang!
The bullet shot out and rang through the valley. The birds on both sides fluttered away. And the fawn, who was drinking, was nowhere to be seen.
Mark Evans looked at Wendy next to him, said furiously, “What the hell are you doing?"
Wendy winked her fawn-like eyes and said innocently, “Hunting.”
Mark Evans was too angry to speak a word.
He glanced at Abel Hill who had withdrawn his gun, and said in a low voice, “You're not supposed to join this expedition to show off your marksmanship for fun man! Didn't you see that Mr. Hill has already raised his gun?”
“Yeah,” Wendy asked. “Since we're hunting together, do we have to see who comes first?”
Mark gritted his teeth, face livid.
Elektra used to see this family dispute. Since Abel did not want to interfere, she could only moved over and pulled Wendy's clothes.
Wendy squinted at her and sneered, “I thought it was fine if someone had a dog staring at me, but I didn't know he was so keen to be someone else's dog.”
“Bah!” A loud bang.
Without a word, Mark Evans raised his hand and slapped Wendy in front of everyone.
