Chapter 2 The Rules Begins

The door closed behind Naomi with a soft click, but the tension she left behind lingered in the room like a shadow that refused to fade. Lara didn’t move immediately. Her fingers still gripped the paper in her hand, but her mind… her mind was somewhere else entirely. “This place isn’t what it looks like.” “And neither is he.” Her eyes lifted slowly. Cahn was watching her. Not casually. Not indifferently. But closely—like he was studying her reaction, measuring it, weighing it. “Focus,” he calmly. The single word snapped her back. “I am,” she replied quickly, though said her voice betrayed a slight tremor. “No,” he said, stepping closer again, “you’re distracted.” Her breath caught. There was no point denying it. Not when he could read her that easily. “I just…” she hesitated, then chose her words carefully. “I didn’t expect that.” “Naomi?” She nodded. A pause. Then something shifted in his expression—subtle, almost unnoticeable, but there. “Expectation,” he said slowly, “is a weakness you need to get rid of.” Lara frowned slightly. “You keep saying that.” “Because it’s true.” He moved past her, back toward his desk, but his presence still filled the room completely. “You expect things to go a certain way,” he continued, “and when they don’t… you lose control.” His fingers tapped lightly against the desk. “I don’t lose control.” The way he said it wasn’t defensive. It was absolute. Lara swallowed. Of course he didn’t. Everything about him screamed control. His posture. His voice. The way he looked at her like he already knew her next move before she made it. “Then what do you do?” she asked quietly. He looked at her. Directly. Intensely. “I take it.” Her heartbeat skipped. The words weren’t loud. But they landed. Hard. He gestured toward the chair in front of his desk. “Sit.” Lara obeyed. This time, without hesitation. A small detail… but not one he missed. “Good,” he said. That one word sent a strange warmth through her chest. Why did his approval matter? She didn’t even know him. Yet somehow… she wanted to get it right. Wanted to meet whatever standard he had set. Cahn opened a file and slid it across to her. “Your tasks for today,” he said. “Simple. Straightforward. No mistakes.” She nodded, scanning through the pages. Emails. Scheduling. Document organization. Normal work. But under his watch, even the simplest things felt… intense. Like they mattered more than they should. “Any questions?” he asked. Lara hesitated. Then: “What happens if I make a mistake?” Silence. Not immediate. Not casual. Intentional. Cahn leaned back slightly, his gaze never leaving hers. “You learn.” Her brows pulled together slightly. “That’s all?” His lips curved—just barely. “No.” He leaned forward. “And you remember not to repeat it.” The air between them tightened again. Her pulse picked up. There was something in his tone. Something unspoken. Something that made her wonder if “learning” meant more than just correction. Hours passed. Or at least, she thought they did. Time felt… strange in his office. Slower. Heavier. Every movement she made felt like it was being observed. Measured. Even when he wasn’t looking directly at her… she could feel it. That awareness. That presence. She focused on her tasks, typing carefully, double-checking everything. She wasn’t about to give him a reason to criticize her. Not today. But still— Her mind kept drifting. To Naomi. To that message. To the way Cahn had said “I take control.” “You’re distracted again.” His voice cut through her thoughts like a blade. She froze slightly. “I’m working,” she said quickly. “Your mind isn’t.” She looked up. He was closer now. When had he moved? Her breath hitched slightly. “I’m fine,” she insisted. “Lara.” Her name. The way he said it—low, controlled—sent a subtle shiver down her spine. “Look at me.” She did. Slowly. And immediately regretted it. Because his gaze… It wasn’t just observant anymore. It was intense. Focused. Almost… consuming. “You won’t survive here if you keep letting things get into your head,” he said quietly. “I can handle it,” she replied, though she wasn’t entirely sure anymore. Another pause. Then— “Prove it.” Her breath caught. “How?” He straightened slightly. “By doing your job,” he said simply. “Without hesitation. Without distraction.” The rest of the day passed under that same pressure. And strangely… She didn’t hate it. If anything— She felt sharper. More aware. More… alive. Like something inside her was waking up. Something she didn’t fully understand yet. By the time evening came, Lara was exhausted. Mentally more than physically. She gathered her things slowly, unsure if she should leave without saying anything. “Leaving?” She turned. Cahn was watching her again. “Yes, sir.” A pause. Then he nodded once. “Tomorrow. Earlier.” “Of course.” She hesitated. Then: “Did I… do okay?” The question slipped out before she could stop it. Silence followed. For a second, she thought he wouldn’t answer. Then— “You didn’t fail.” Her lips parted slightly. That wasn’t exactly praise. But somehow… It felt like something. She stepped out of the building, the cool evening air hitting her face. Her chest rose and fell slowly. That place… That man… It was a lot. Too much, maybe. And yet— She was already thinking about going back. Her phone buzzed. Unknown number. Again. Her heart skipped as she opened the message. “You’re learning fast.” Her stomach dropped. Another message followed immediately: “But you’re still not ready for what’s coming.” Lara’s fingers trembled slightly. She looked up, scanning the street around her. People moved normally. Cars passed. Nothing seemed out of place. But still… She felt it. That same feeling from before. Like someone was watching her. Closer this time. Her phone buzzed again. One last message appeared. “Next time… he won’t go easy on you.” Lara’s breath caught. Her eyes widened slightly as she slowly lowered the phone. Because deep down… She wasn’t sure if that warning scared her— Or made her want to go back even more. I
