After class, I closed my book with a grim expression. In the previous life, I had my parents protecting me every step of the way, so I never really studied. Even high school material felt like a struggle now. Plus, back then I was too busy pouring resources into Gary to help him rise, never bothering to improve myself. That's why I ended up being easily manipulated by him. Having gone through all that, I finally understood: 'Investing in others is worthless compared to making yourself strong. Real power comes from within.' Just then, Gary approached me inopportunely. "Serena, why didn't you want to be my deskmate?" I stared at him, and we both gawked at each other. I couldn't help but laugh. "What's with the interrogating tone? Why should I be your deskmate? Who do you think you are?
