Suddenly, I could breathe again. Just as the fangs sank an inch into my fur and pierced my skin, they were ripped off me and the entire weight of the wolf was gone. I scrambled to my feet and watched a large, black wolf battle the rogue. The battle lasted a minute and then it was over. The rogue lay, vanquished at the black wolf’s feet.
I met its brown eyes with mine and felt a curious warmth speared through me and heat me up from the inside out. I wouldn’t turn my eyes away. No, I couldn’t. I stared into the depths of his eyes, confused as to why I was behaving this way until his words in my head through the werewolf mind link clarified things.
‘Shift so you can heal, Mate”
My eyes widened in shock. My mate? He was my mate?
When I hesitated to transform his voice came in my head again, this time shocking me beyond comprehension.
‘Shift Mate” his words felt like a command to my soul and I began to shift. I knew what this meant and my heart beat erratically inside my chest with the revelation. No other Alpha but the Alpha of your Pack could force you to shift. That meant this was my Alpha, this was Damien. I was mated to Damien? How? How could that have happened? How could we be mated and not know all this time?
As I shifted, he followed suit and we both stared at each other with complete shock.
“No. You are not my mate. You can’t be my mate. I can’t be mated to a filthy betraying Omega!” He spat with anger worse than I had ever heard from him. I took a hesitant step back even though every fibre in my being was begging me to move closer.
“I.. how didn’t we know till now?” I asked, somehow made braver with the mate bond invigorating me.
“You’ve never transformed have you? What the f**k made you transform now?!” He yelled. I flinched and took another step back.
“I just wanted to protect myself. I-“ “Listen here, nothing happened. You are not my mate and you never will be. This Pack will not accept a traitor as Luna. I will not accept a traitor as my Luna. Now get the berries and return to the Pack!” And with that he was gone.
I sank to the floor of the forest as my emotions came crashing down on me. Of all the things that could happen, my mate just had to be a man who hated me with everything he had. A mate was supposed to be my last hope for happiness, someone to take me away from this life and make me smile. And now that was just gone, all because of that person that framed my parents. A burning hatred for the person once more filled me and I wiped away my tears. I quickly searched in the trees till I found some clothes left there by my Pack. People randomly stashed clothes on trees in the Pack’s forest for emergencies, like when they unexpectedly transform and rip their clothes. I put them on and gathered my berries back into the basket. Then I made my way back to the Pack with a heavy heart.
When I had given the berries to the people in the kitchen, I made my way back to my house to see my brother. I knew I still had some work to do but I just needed to see him. My heart was aching and he always managed to make me smile.
I made my way into the house and stopped short, surprised to see Melissa and Devon waiting for me.
“We heard the Alpha called you to his office and we haven’t seen you since so we came to visit. What happened?” Melissa asked.
I sighed and joined them on the old battered couch.
“I left a spec of dust in the meeting room today and he called me to punish me for it”
“Just a spec? Come on, that’s not fair!” Devon said.
“The punishment wasn’t so bad, I just had to pick berries”
“Then why do you smell like blood?” Devon asked, sniffing the air.
“And why are you wearing someone else’s clothes?” Melissa added.
“I um.. I was attacked by a rogue wolf”
They both gasped. “A rogue? My God are you okay?” Devon asked as he held me in a gentle hug I greatly appreciated.
I finally let the tears I’d been holding in fall. Both my friends comforted me as best they could and waited patiently until I was willing and able to tell them what happened.
I related the entire incident to them, including the fact that I was Alpha Damien’s mate and that he had completely rejected me.
“Oh God sweetie I’m so sorry” Melissa said, pulling me from Devon’s frozen hands and into hers.
“He’s your mate?” Devon asked, his voice filled with shock and something else I couldn’t pinpoint.
“Well not anymore since he flat out rejected me” I replied.
“Oh honey it doesn’t work that way. The mate bond isn’t something you can ignore. Once it’s acknowledged when both werewolves are in wolf form there’s no denying it” she said.
“Well that’s not entirely fact is it?” Devon asked. They launched into an argument about the complexities of the mate bond and I rose to get myself a glass of water. I touched the fridge and suddenly I was no longer in the kitchen. No, I was but it looked different. It was arranged in a different way.
I looked around and saw my parents seated on the dining table. They were talking but it was like I was immersed in water. I could barely hear them.
I tried desperately to make out their words.
“.. isn’t who he.. don’t trust.. I know...”
I strained to hear better, to put their words together.
“.. single silver eye.. bad.. crazy... Celeste..”
And then just as suddenly as the image appeared, it vanished. It felt like I was resurfacing from deep waters. I took a deep breath through my mouth to gulp in air like I was starved of it. The air was however too much too soon and I began coughing.
Devon and Melissa immediately stopped talking and came to me.
“What’s wrong sweetie?” Melissa asked.
Hell if I knew. Since I was little, I had these little over imaginations. I would touch an object and fixate on it and dream up something that happened around it or that could happen. I could never understand why it kept happening but my parents told me I simply had an overactive imagination which I shouldn’t bore anyone else but them with. So with that in mind, I replied:
“Nothing. Just choked a little bit”
“Be careful okay. Wanna come sit?” Devon asked. I nodded and released my death grip on the fridge.
They stayed and comforted me for a few more minutes and then they left. I made my way to Owen’s room to check up on him.
“Come in” he said as a reply to my knock.
“Celeste, you’re back!” He exclaimed with a bright smile on his face that melted all my worries and reminded me of why I was enduring everything.
He pulled me into a hug and I held him close for a minute or two before I let him go.
“Is something wrong? Did something happen?” He asked, ever intuitive. I ruffled his brown hair and met his eyes.
“No hon, I’m fine”
“That’s what you say when you’re not fine. Did they hurt you again?” He asked, eyes so identical to mine narrowed in suspicion and anger.
“No Owen, really. I’m fine”
“If you wanted to lie to me perhaps you should’ve cleaned yourself up before coming in here. My smell may not be so good because I haven’t reached transformation age yet but it is good enough that I can smell the blood on you”
I sighed. Sometimes he was too smart for his own good and I was too dumb for mine.
“Fine I tripped a little”
He raised a brow. “I’ll do you one better. This house is old and the walls paper thin. I heard your entire conversation”
I gasped in shock.
“You were eavesdropping?” I asked accusingly.
He blushed. “No I just happened to overhear. Now do you wanna tell me how you actually feel?”
I sighed and sank into his bed.
“Well I feel awful and I’m tired and I just want to go to bed”
“Then take a nap. I’ll finish the rest of the day’s chores”
I sat up immediately. “No. Absolutely not”
He groaned. “They’re my chores too Celeste. You can’t keep protecting me. I’m grown up now, it’s my turn to protect you”
“You’re only fourteen Owen. That’s not grown up”
“You started this work when you were eleven” he countered.
“Touché. But you are not going out there. I won’t let them abuse you like-“ I stopped abruptly. He narrowed his eyes.
“Like they do to you?”
I sighed. “Just let it go Owen. My answer is no”
He nodded. “Fine. Just lay down for a little bit then. Just for five minutes and then you’ll go continue”
I sighed and leaned my head against his headboard.
He slipped his covers over me, and that was the last thing I remembered.
Where was I? I didn’t know. It was dark, so dark. I could hear things whizzing by my head with alarming speed and all I could do was pray that none of them would hit me.
Suddenly I saw a light in the distance. I began slowly and carefully making my way toward it. The closer I got, the brighter it was. When I finally got there, I saw that the light was coming from above. It was an opening in what looked to be a cave. I began trying to make my way to it, climbing the walls carefully. When I finally made it to the top, I reached for the last stone but was abruptly pulled out of the dream and into reality
.
I looked up into the anger filled light brown eyes of Alpha Damien.
