I turned sharply toward the boarding gate just in time to see Erik striding toward us.
But the moment his gaze landed on me in my flight attendant uniform, panic flashed unmistakably across his face.
"Erik!"
I broke free from Lauren's grip and rushed straight toward him. The whispers and stares from nearby passengers no longer mattered. My entire body was shaking with fury.
"Didn't you tell me you and Mom and Dad were already on your way to Maldura?" I demanded. "Then why are you here? And who exactly is she?"
I pointed directly at Chloe, who was still clinging affectionately to Selina's arm. My fingers had gone numb from how tightly I was clenching them.
Just last night, Erik had held me close and murmured against my ear, "You've worked hard, honey. Once you land, we'll video call on Christmas Eve." Before I left for the airport, he had even carefully helped me pack my flight case himself.
And now he was taking another woman on vacation with my in-laws. So what exactly did that make me?
Erik avoided my gaze instinctively and immediately grabbed my wrist, dragging me away from the crowd.
"Lyd, lower your voice," he muttered anxiously. "This is the airport. Don't make a scene here. It'll damage our reputation."
His voice dropped even further. "I know I'm in the wrong, but Chloe's situation is complicated. She's family too. I'll explain everything later, okay? Just calm down first. Don't let people turn us into a joke."
His hand felt ice-cold. And the force of his grip hurt badly enough to make my bones ache.
"Explain later?" I jerked my hand free violently. My eyes burned with tears, but I refused to let them fall. "You lied to me about going to Maldura, brought another woman to travel with your parents, and let her pretend to be your wife."
I stared directly at him. "And now you want to discuss it privately? Erik, what exactly do you take me for?"
"Keep your voice down!" His expression darkened immediately as he glanced nervously toward the growing crowd around us. "There are people everywhere. Do you really want everyone hearing about our personal life? That won't benefit either of us."
"Our personal life?" I laughed bitterly. "You've already introduced her to your parents, taken her on family vacations, and let her publicly call herself your wife."
My chest tightened painfully. "Did you honestly think this would never be exposed?"
I looked straight into his eyes. "So tell me the truth. What exactly is your relationship with her? Were you really married six months ago?"
Before Erik could answer, Chloe suddenly stepped forward impatiently. "Erik, stop wasting your breath on her."
She crossed her arms and looked at me with open disdain. "Women like this only care about money. The more politely you speak to them, the more shameless they become."
I stared at her coldly, and the smugness in her eyes told me everything I needed to know. She had known exactly who I was from the very beginning, yet still inserted herself into my marriage without a shred of guilt.
And once Erik realized I had no one standing beside me, he stopped pretending entirely. He walked directly over to Chloe, stood protectively beside her, then looked at me with exaggerated frustration.
"What exactly is wrong with you?" he snapped loudly. "Can't you stop harassing us already?" He pointed at me in front of everyone. "We ended things a long time ago. Stop following me around and bothering my family."
For a moment, I genuinely thought I had misheard him.
'Harassing?'
The word echoed through my head like a knife. He was actually calling me the stalker.
The surrounding whispers instantly grew louder. More and more passengers pulled out their phones to record the scene.
At that point, several cabin crew members hurried over. The chief flight attendant grabbed my arm anxiously and lowered her voice. "Lydia, this is affecting departure preparations now. Whatever's happening, you need to resolve it off the aircraft first."
Even the captain walked over with a grim expression. "Because this conflict is now affecting flight safety," he said firmly, "all parties involved will need to disembark immediately. Whether you board again afterward can be decided later."
Erik instantly put on an apologetic smile. "Of course, Captain. We're very sorry for causing trouble. We'll cooperate immediately."
Watching him switch faces so effortlessly made me physically sick. The humiliation and rage burning inside me nearly suffocated me alive.
I forced myself to take a slow breath before turning toward the chief flight attendant. "I'd like to request emergency leave," I said quietly. "I need to settle this matter properly."
She nodded immediately and signaled for airport staff to escort us off the plane.
The moment we stepped into the terminal, Erik struck first. "I'm really sorry everyone," he announced loudly to the surrounding crowd. "This woman has been obsessively stalking me for a long time."
His expression was full of righteous frustration. "She keeps insisting she's my wife even though we have absolutely no relationship. I've rejected her countless times, but she refuses to stop." He pointed directly at me. "She even chased us onto the plane today to harass my family."
I almost laughed from disbelief. What a remarkable performance. Only one year after our wedding, and he had already become a complete stranger.
Chloe seized the opportunity immediately, looking at me with open mockery. "So this is what some flight attendants do now?" she said with a disdainful laugh. "Find a rich man and pretend to be his wife? Good thing my husband was here today. Otherwise, who knows how far this scam would've gone."
Meanwhile, my so-called in-laws stood nearby looking genuinely confused.
Selina looked at me with pity instead of recognition. "You're still young and pretty," she said awkwardly. "Why do this to yourself? My son and his wife are right here. There's no point embarrassing yourself like this anymore."
Richard nodded impatiently beside her. "You can't force someone to love you," he added. "You should leave before this becomes even more humiliating."
At that moment, something inside me finally went completely cold. I understood now. No amount of anger would solve this.
If I wanted the truth exposed, I needed evidence. Otherwise, even if I divorced Erik today, the accusation of being a delusional stalker would follow me forever.
Taking a slow breath, I reached into my bag and pulled out our marriage certificate. Then I raised it high in front of the airport staff and the growing crowd around us.
"You're calling me crazy?" I held up the marriage certificate for everyone to see. "Then maybe someone should explain why this is legally registered."
My eyes locked on Erik. "Go ahead. Take a closer look if you think it's fake."
