Episode 3 : Shadows and Demons

1754 Words
Rayan stands at the edge of the corpse-filled valley, her body bleeding, her heart pounding hard. The foul stench of toxic gas fills her lungs, but she holds herself together. Before her, the masked woman in the red cloak aims her gun at her, her eyes hidden behind the mask gleaming with caution and suspicion. Silence blankets the scene, broken only by the sound of the wind, charged with dread, and the moaning of the decomposing corpses beneath their feet. "Are you one of the Savior's soldiers?" the masked woman asks, her tone sharp as a blade, as if trying to cut through Rayan's secrets with her gaze. Rayan, despite the blood trickling from her thigh, lifts her chin defiantly. "The Savior's soldiers?" she replies with a mocking smile. "If you thought I was one of them, you wouldn't have pulled me out of that wretched valley. I'm only here to cross this cursed land. And you — why are you wandering around a place like this? You seem to know more of this region's secrets than you're letting on." The masked woman tilts her head slightly, as if studying Rayan's words. Then she slowly lowers her gun, though her hand stays ready to move. "I'm here because I lost my way, same as you. This land is no place for the weak. But you survived those skeletal creatures... that's no small thing. Who are you?" Rayan watches her warily, her eyes tracking the woman's every movement. Instead of giving her real name, she says in a calm but firm tone, "My name... is Aria Naive." The name leaves her mouth like a shield, protecting her true identity and adding a layer of mystery. "And you? Who are you?" The masked woman lets out a soft laugh, as if impressed by Rayan's cleverness. "Aria Naive? A rare name — bold, even. Alright, if you want a name, call me... Kai. Just Kai." She holsters her gun in one smooth motion, then adds, "I'll help you get out of this cursed region, but after that... our paths part. This world shows no mercy to those who trust too easily." Rayan nods, but her eyes never leave Kai for a moment. "Agreed. Let's get out of here first." The scene shifts from Rayan and Kai to... Far away, beneath a starless black sky, a man in a dark purple cloak sits on an ancient wooden chair, carved with strange shapes resembling twisted spirits. Darkness wraps around him like a second cloak, the only light coming from his eyes, glowing an eerie purple. Beside him, demonic creatures gather — a horrifying hybrid of deer and wolves. Their bodies are covered in thick black fur, their eyes red as blood, their fangs gleaming silver under the pale moonlight. Their long legs end in sharp claws, and their voices blend the howl of dogs with the unsettling cry of deer, charging the air with dread. The man raises his hand, and the demons suddenly freeze, as if obeying a silent command. In a deep, chilling voice, he says, "Kill the masked woman, Kai. She's a threat that cannot be tolerated. But... avoid the soul hunter. Do not engage her, whatever it costs. She is not like the others." The demons let out terrifying sounds, a mix of wolf howls and deer shrieks, then race off with supernatural speed, their bodies moving like shadows. The ground trembles beneath their feet, the scraping of their claws against rock sounding like graves being dug open. The man in the purple cloak remains seated, hands clasped together, his eyes gleaming with a wicked light, as though he can already see everything that's about to unfold. Back to Rayan and Kai Rayan and Kai walk with great caution through the dark valley, decomposing corpses surrounding them on every side. The sky above is thick with gray clouds, emitting white light with a faint red flicker, as if the sky itself were bleeding. The foul stench of toxic gas fills the air, but Rayan seems unaffected, her steps steady despite the blood staining her clothes. Kai, walking beside her, suddenly turns to her and asks, "How can you breathe through these toxic gases? What kind of human are you?" Rayan smiles slyly, her eyes gleaming with cunning. "I'm not entirely human. Half jinn, half human. That's what lets me endure what others can't. The gases? Just a foul breeze to me." Kai tilts her head, as if analyzing Rayan's words. Then she asks carefully, as though setting a trap: "And what brings a woman like you to a place like this? No one enters this land without a reason... or a mission." Rayan laughs lightly, but her eyes never leave Kai. "A reason? Maybe I'm just a lost wanderer looking for trouble. Or maybe I'm running from something worse than these corpses. What about you? A masked woman with a gun, roaming through demon territory... sounds like your story is more interesting than mine." Kai falls silent for a moment, then says, "Hmm... clever. Fine, I won't question you further for now. Let's focus on getting out of here first." Suddenly, Rayan stops, her hand darting to draw her katana. Kai looks at her in shock, thinking Rayan is about to attack her, and quickly draws her gun. But before she can move, a decisive strike from Rayan's sword slices off the head of a hideous demon emerging from beneath the ground. Its head — a grotesque blend of deer and wolf — rolls across the ground, black blood bursting like a fountain, splattering Kai's mask, clothes, and gun. Rayan shouts, "Kai, stay close to me, don't move away!" The ground shakes, and from beneath the corpses, more than twenty demons burst forth, their bodies twisted, their eyes glowing red like embers, their fangs gleaming like knives. Rayan, in an inner monologue with herself, thinks, "Their intent is to kill Kai... damn them!" The battle between Rayan, Kai, and the demons begins... The fight erupts like fire in a dry forest. Rayan stands like a whirlwind, her katana moving with stunning speed, severing the demons' limbs and tearing through their bodies. Every strike of hers is precise, as though she's dancing a dance of death. Black blood scatters through the air, the howls of the demons filling the space, mixed with Rayan's furious screams and the steady fire of Kai's gun. Kai fights alongside her, her gun firing bullets that pierce the demons' heads with lethal precision. But the demons don't stop — they keep emerging from beneath the ground like worms, their numbers growing by the moment. One of them unleashes dark magic, a blood-colored strike that shoots out like a blade, tearing through Kai's bag and destroying her equipment. Her mask cracks, and toxic gas begins seeping into her lungs. Rayan screams, "Kai, hold on!" as she cuts down another demon, but the demons keep multiplying. Suddenly, a massive demon rises from beneath the ground, its eyes glowing with black magic. It unleashes a magical, blood-red strike that hits Kai's mask directly — the mask shatters, and Kai collapses to the ground, choking on the toxic gas. Rayan, her fury igniting like fire, charges at the demon that struck Kai. With one decisive blow, she severs its head, black blood spraying like rain. The other demons suddenly stop, staring at Rayan with eyes full of hatred, then let out a terrifying laugh, like the cackle of hyenas. Suddenly, they burrow into the ground and vanish, leaving behind an eerie stillness. Rayan rushes toward Kai, who is coughing up blood, her eyes bleeding, her body convulsing from the poison. "Hold on, Kai, we're getting out of here!" Rayan cries, her voice full of desperation. Kai shakes her head weakly and says in a broken voice, "Even if we get out... my body's contaminated. I'll cause another epidemic, I'll destroy nature... everything living." Blood drips from her eyes, nose, and ears, her body trembling. Rayan looks at her. Kai, in a weak voice, says, "Take my small bag... it has my home's location. My little sister is there." Then she convulses, and stops breathing. Rayan grips her sword tightly. "............." With one swift strike, she stabs Kai's heart, ending her suffering. Blood flows, and Kai's body goes limp. Suddenly, a brilliant white glow rises from Kai's body, her soul emerging as pure energy, shimmering like starlight. Rayan looks at it and whispers, "Rest now, Lady Camellia. I'll save your sister, just as you saved me." She extends her hand, drawing the soul into her sword, as though sealing a sacred promise. Rayan takes the blood-stained red cloak from Kai's body and puts it on as a symbol of a new vow. She carries the small bag and makes her way out of the place, looking around her at her surroundings. Suddenly, the ground begins to change — green grass sprouts up among the corpses, and the sky splits in two: one half clear blue like the sea, the other half dark red like blood, blending together in a strange, captivating sight. Rayan pauses, taking in this strange transformation, then turns and continues on her way. Leaving the Region After hours of walking, Rayan emerges from the Star Region, arriving at a dirt road lined with green trees. Suddenly, a small bird with shimmering blue feathers lands on a nearby tree. It tilts its head and asks in a curious tone, "Do you have water, human?" Rayan looks at it and says, "Sorry, I don't have any water." The bird nods and flies off without another word. Rayan keeps walking until she suddenly stops. She draws her sword and raises it high, and a light bright as the sun bursts from it, filling the place with warmth. Kai's soul — or rather, Camellia's — appears before her, her white glow shimmering like a star. Rayan whispers, "Rise to the heavens with the free spirits, Camellia." The soul ascends with tremendous speed, vanishing into the sky like a shooting star. Rayan opens the small bag and finds a device resembling a phone. She opens it, and a digital map appears with an app called "Home." She taps it, and coordinates appear, pointing to Camellia's house. Rayan looks at the map and says, "Alright... I'll find your sister." Then she continues on her way, the red cloak fluttering behind her, her sword gleaming beneath the blue sky, as she moves forward toward her unknown fate. ⟪To be continued⟫
