CHAPTER 11: EPILOGUE: 6 month later

255 Words
6 months later. "Mr. Sterling, your 2PM meeting is cancelled," my secretary said. "Good," I said. "I’m leaving early." The entire office knew why. Sterling Tower. 40th floor. My office was different now. Two desks. Two coffee mugs. And a photo frame. In the photo: Me in a tux. Isabella in white. Both of us laughing. Both of us real. My phone buzzed. Wife ❤️ "Hey," I answered. "Jake," Isabella said. She sounded excited. "The hospital just called." My heart stopped. "And?" "Mom’s checkup was perfect," she said. "Doctor said she’s 100% healthy." I closed my eyes and exhaled. "Thank God." "I told you," Isabella said, laughing. "You did this. You saved her." "We saved her," I corrected. "Together." There was a pause. "Come home early?" she asked. Soft. "I’m leaving now," I said. "What do you want for dinner?" "You," she said. Then giggled. "And jollof rice." I hung up smiling. That night, we were on our balcony. Abuja lights below us. Isabella was in my shirt. Her head on my chest. "Remember when this was just a 1-month contract?" she whispered. "I try not to," I said. "I almost lost you." "You didn’t," she said. "Because you chose me." I kissed the top of her head. "So what now, Mrs. Sterling?" She looked up at me. Eyes shining. "Now we live," she said. "No contracts. No secrets. No fake." "Just real," I finished. She nodded. "Just us. Forever." And for the first time in my life, I believed in forever. THE END
