Chapter 12: Reclaiming What Was Lost
Three days after the gala, I stood in front of the old Alaric building downtown.
It had once been the headquarters of my family’s empire. Now it looked tired and forgotten, with boarded windows on the lower floors and faded letters on the sign. Most people had stopped noticing it years ago.
Today, I noticed everything.
Elena and Thomas waited with me outside the main entrance. Marcus stood a few steps behind me, quiet but present. A small group of reporters had gathered after we sent out a short statement that morning. I had not spoken to them yet. I wanted them to see this moment with their own eyes first.
I walked up the steps and placed my hand on the cold metal door handle. It felt heavier than it should have.
Inside, the lobby was dusty and dark. Sunlight came through the broken windows in thin beams. I could almost hear echoes of the past — phones ringing, people talking, my father’s voice giving orders.
Elena spoke softly beside me.
“We can start cleaning it up tomorrow. The legal team is already working on transferring ownership back to you. Most of the board members from the old days are willing to return.”
I nodded slowly.
“I want everything documented properly,” I said. “No more hiding. No more pretending this family never existed.”
Thomas cleared his throat.
“There is one more thing. Sophia’s family has gone quiet since the gala. But Victor Lang’s people are still out there. That message you received… it wasn’t empty.”
I already knew that.
The threat was still real. They had lost this round, but they would not disappear quietly.
Marcus stepped closer.
“We have security in place. And more allies are reaching out every day. You’re not alone in this anymore.”
I looked at him. For a brief moment, I allowed myself to feel the quiet comfort of knowing someone had my back without asking for anything in return.
“Thank you,” I said.
We spent the next hour walking through the building. I touched old desks and looked at faded photographs still hanging on some of the walls. With every step, the weight I had carried for years felt a little lighter.
By the time we stepped back outside, the reporters were waiting.
I walked to the front of the steps and faced them. Cameras flashed. Microphones were raised.
I spoke clearly.
“My name is Clara Alaric. For years I lived under another name and stayed silent while others tried to erase my family’s legacy. That ends today. I am taking back what was stolen. And I will make sure no one can take it again.”
The questions came quickly after that.
I answered a few, then let Elena handle the rest.
As the crowd began to thin, my phone vibrated.
Another message from an unknown number.
This one was shorter.
We are not finished with you, little princess.
I stared at the screen for a long moment.
Then I deleted the message and slipped the phone back into my pocket.
Marcus watched me quietly.
“Another threat?” he asked.
I nodded once.
“They can send as many messages as they want,” I said. “I’m done running from them.”
I looked back at the old building one more time.
For the first time in years, it no longer felt like a ghost of the past.
It felt like the beginning of something new.
And I was ready to fight for it.
