Chapter 14: Lines in the Sand
The next morning, I made my first real move in the open.
I called a press conference at the Alaric building. It was small, but the important people came. Reporters, a few old business partners who had once worked with my father, and several members of the board who were still loyal to the family name.
I stood at a simple podium in the freshly cleaned lobby and spoke without notes.
“From today, the Alaric Group will begin operating again under its original name. We will honor the legacy my parents built and protect it from anyone who tries to destroy it. This is not about revenge. This is about truth and justice.”
Cameras flashed. Questions came quickly.
I answered them calmly and directly. When someone asked about Julian and Sophia, I simply said, “They made their choices. Now they must face the consequences.”
By afternoon, the news was everywhere.
That evening, I returned to the safe house later than usual. Marcus was already there, waiting in the small living area. He had food on the table, but he looked serious.
“You made a strong statement today,” he said. “But it also put a bigger target on your back.”
I sat down across from him.
“I know. But I’m tired of hiding. If they want to come for me, they can do it while I’m standing in the light.”
Marcus was quiet for a moment. Then he spoke again, his voice softer.
“I’ve watched you carry this alone for weeks. You don’t have to anymore. I’m here. Elena and Thomas are here. There are others who want to help. Let us.”
I looked at him. The steady way he always showed up. The way he never asked for anything in return. Something warm and unfamiliar stirred in my chest.
“I’m trying,” I said quietly. “It’s not easy for me to trust people anymore.”
“I know,” he replied. “But you can trust me.”
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
It was Elena. Her voice was urgent.
“Clara, you need to come to the building right now. Someone broke in. They didn’t take anything valuable, but they left a message.”
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of message?”
Elena hesitated.
“They wrote it on the wall in your father’s old office. It says: ‘This is just the beginning. The real trap is still waiting for you.’”
I ended the call and stood up.
Marcus was already grabbing his jacket.
“I’m coming with you,” he said.
We drove through the city in silence. When we arrived at the Alaric building, police lights were flashing outside. Elena met us at the entrance.
We went straight to my father’s old office.
The words were written in red paint across one entire wall. Big, angry letters that covered the fresh paint we had just applied.
Marcus stood beside me, reading the message.
“They’re trying to scare you,” he said.
I stared at the wall for a long moment.
“They’re not scaring me,” I answered. “They’re making me angry.”
I turned to Elena.
“Get the security upgraded. I want cameras on every floor and people watching twenty-four hours a day. And call Thomas. I want to know every person who has access to this building.”
Elena nodded and left the room.
Marcus looked at me.
“What are you thinking?”
I took one last look at the threatening words on the wall.
“I’m thinking it’s time we stopped reacting,” I said. “It’s time we started hunting them instead.”
Outside, the city lights glowed in the dark.
For the first time since this all began, I wasn’t just trying to survive.
I was ready to end it.
