Chapter 8: Allies and Enemies
I did not go back to the mansion that night.
Instead, I returned to the safe house. Marcus was already there when I arrived. He had maps and documents spread across the small table. Two other people were with him. Both were older than us. Both had known my family before everything fell apart.
The woman’s name was Elena. She had worked for my father as his assistant. The man was called Thomas. He had been one of the family’s lawyers. They had stayed hidden all these years, waiting for any sign that someone from the Alaric line had survived.
Elena placed a new folder in front of me.
“Sophia’s family has been trying to take what was left of your parents’ businesses for years,” she said. “They used different names and different companies, but it was always them. When they realized you were still alive and married to Julian, they sent Sophia to finish the job.”
I looked at the documents. Names and dates connected everything. Sophia had not been a random woman who caught Julian’s eye. She had been sent with a purpose.
Thomas spoke next.
“We still have people loyal to your family. Not many, but enough to help. If you give the word, we can start moving against them.”
I felt the weight of it all settle on my shoulders. This was no longer just about Julian and his betrayal. It was about finishing a fight that had started long before I ever met him.
Marcus stood beside me. He did not say much, but his presence was steady. I was grateful for that. In a world where almost everyone had turned out to be an enemy or a liar, he had stayed.
“Thank you,” I said to all three of them. “We move carefully. We do not give them any reason to run yet.”
Elena nodded.
“We will wait for your signal.”
It was almost morning when my safe phone rang. The number on the screen was one I recognized.
Julian.
I answered but did not speak first.
His voice came through, low and tired.
“Clara… we need to talk. Alone. I want to make a deal.”
I stayed quiet for a moment.
Marcus watched me from across the room. He gave a small nod.
“I will meet you,” I said finally. “But not at the mansion. And not alone.”
Julian was silent for a few seconds.
“Fine,” he said. “Tell me where.”
I gave him the name of a quiet restaurant on the edge of the city. Then I ended the call.
Marcus was already making arrangements.
“I will have people there,” he said. “They will not be seen, but they will be close. If anything feels wrong, we pull you out.”
I looked out the small window of the safe house. The sky was starting to turn gray with the coming morning.
Julian wanted to talk about a deal.
He still did not understand that the only deal left on the table was the one I had already decided to make.
