Chapter 7: Secrets and Second Chances

1032 Words
The moon hung high in the sky, its silvery glow casting shadows across the forest path as Olivia made her way to the outskirts of the pack. She had been escorted by one of the guards, given strict instructions not to ask questions. The command had come from Christopher himself, and though no reason was given, Olivia didn’t press it. She had learned long ago that in a pack, obedience often outweighed curiosity. Still, her mind raced with questions. Why now? Why here? She glanced up as they finally reached the house. It was nestled deep in the trees, far from the main pack grounds. The house was... breathtaking. Not overly large, but built with rich, dark wood, tall windows, and clean stone pathways. It radiated warmth and solitude, an oasis of peace. When the guard left her at the doorstep, Olivia lingered a moment before stepping inside. The interior was just as striking. Cozy, yet modern. Everything was well kept and clean lines, leather furniture, earthy tones. The scent of cedar and pine hung in the air, and beneath it, a faint but unmistakable scent that made her pulse quicken. Christopher. She ran her hand along the smooth wooden railing of the staircase, wondering how often he stayed here. It didn’t feel like a vacation home. It felt... lived in. As she sat on the plush couch in the living room, her thoughts turned back to the man himself. She remembered the way his fingers had brushed her arm when he helped her up from the infirmary earlier that day. It had been the lightest touch, barely there but it had sent a shiver up her spine. A strange tingling sensation she couldn’t explain. She remembered how her heart raced when his eyes locked with hers. How her breath caught when he spoke her name. Was it possible? Could he be her second chance mate? She had heard whispers of it back in her old pack rumors passed around fires and during latenight patrols. Second chance mates were rare, elusive. Most werewolves only got one shot at true love. If they lost their mate, they were often destined to live the rest of their lives alone. But sometimes, fate offered another chance. It was never guaranteed. And it was never simple. Olivia curled her knees to her chest on the couch, staring out the window into the quiet woods. Was she imagining it? Reading too much into fleeting moments? And if she wasn’t ,what did it mean that Christopher had sent her here, hidden her away? Was he protecting her? Or hiding her? Back in the heart of the pack, Christopher stood alone in his office, his jaw tight and his hands buried in his pockets. The night was still, but his thoughts were anything but. He’d made the call on instinct. Jake had smelled something. Had been convinced he’d found his mate. And Christopher had known instantly who he was talking about. Olivia. The realization had hit him like a freight train. The moment Jake spoke of the scent, Christopher had known. He’d felt it himself faint tingles when their skin met, the way his wolf stirred when she entered a room. But unlike Jake, he had kept his mouth shut. Because if Olivia was Jake’s mate... it was over. Christopher would lose her before he ever had the chance. And yet he’d done the unthinkable. He had hidden her. Not just from an alpha, but from his alpha. A treasonous offense. If Jake ever found out, Christopher could be exiled. Or worse. But even knowing the stakes, he couldn’t bring himself to let her go. He told himself he just needed time. Time to figure things out. Time to be sure. But the truth was, he was afraid. Afraid that she wasn’t his second chance mate. Afraid that she was Jake’s. And most of all, afraid of what that would mean for him. He had spent years standing at Jake’s side. Loyal. Unquestioning. The perfect beta. But for her... he had crossed a line. He scrubbed a hand over his face and sat heavily in the chair behind his desk. His wolf paced restlessly beneath the surface, sensing his unease. “You’re a damn fool,” he muttered to himself. But it didn’t change what he’d done. Or what he was willing to do to keep her safe and close. Jake stood outside his cabin, his arms crossed over his chest as he looked out into the night. The wind was picking up, carrying with it the familiar scents of the forest. And yet, the one scent he was desperate to find remained elusive. He inhaled deeply, hoping just for a moment that it would come again. But nothing. He sighed and lowered his head, closing his eyes. Was he going crazy? He’d been so sure. That moment when the scent hit him it had felt like everything he’d been waiting for. His mate. His other half. But now... Now he was starting to doubt everything. Stress. That’s what Christopher had said. The pressure of the alpha summit, the constant threat of rogue attacks, the burden of leading a pack maybe it was all getting to him. Maybe he wanted to find his mate so badly that he had imagined it. But deep down, a small voice in the back of his mind whispered otherwise. You didn’t imagine it. You know she was here. He clenched his fists and turned back toward the house. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was being kept from him. That someone maybe even Christopher wasn’t telling him the whole truth. And if that was the case... he would find out. Far away, Olivia stood at the window of the house, her fingers resting lightly on the glass as she gazed up at the moon. She didn't know what was happening. But she could feel it. A shift. A pull. Something that would change everything. And as the wind howled outside, carrying with it the faintest echo of a growl, she felt the unmistakable sensation of being watched. Not by Christopher. Not by a guard. But by something else. Something ancient. Something dangerous.
