Whispers

Sunlight streamed through the tall windows of the study, casting long shadows across the dark wooden floor. Shelves stretching from floor to ceiling lined the walls, filled with ancient treaties, weathered scrolls, and maps worn by the passage of time. At the center of the room stood a broad desk, cluttered with unfinished reports, sealed letters, and a detailed map of Vareth. Elara stood before the window. Her back was to the room. Her eyes rested on the blue rooftops of Nerethis beyond the palace walls. Her fingertips tapped an uneven rhythm against the stone windowsill. Each tap... A silent echo of the impatience building inside her. At last, she broke the silence herself. "This is starting to get on my nerves." Cassian looked up from his desk. He closed the document in his hands and carefully set it aside. "What are you talking about?" Elara slowly turned to face him. "You." A frustrated smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "How can you stay this calm..." She shook her head. "...when everything is falling apart?" A faint smile appeared on Cassian's face. But he said nothing. His silence... Only fueled her frustration. She began pacing across the study. The sharp sound of her boots echoed against the polished floor. Waiting... Standing still... She had never been good at either. Not on the battlefield. Not within the palace walls. She had always been the one to make the first move. Because to her... Waiting had always meant weakness. Abruptly, she stopped. She drew a slow breath. Then turned back to Cassian. "So..." Her voice softened despite herself. "What would you do?" Cassian remained silent for several seconds. The question hadn't surprised him. But he knew she wouldn't like his answer. Slowly, he rose to his feet. He walked around the desk and stopped before the window. Below, ships were docking at the harbor. "Do you want the honest answer?" Elara gave a quiet nod. Without taking his eyes off the city, Cassian answered. "I would wait." Two simple words. Elara's expression fell immediately. Cassian noticed. But he didn't take them back. "Because right now..." "...he's on edge." He folded his arms across his chest. "If everything happened the way we believe..." "...then Dorian is afraid of you." Elara frowned. "Afraid of me?" This time, her voice carried no anger. Only disbelief. Cassian nodded. "Yes." "He announced your death." "He declared that he would remarry before the kingdom had even finished mourning you." "He claimed that Fire had chosen him." A brief silence settled over the room. "None of that was a coincidence." He walked back to the desk. Placing one finger on the map, he pointed to Vareth. Then he slowly traced a path toward the Duchy of Lavara. "The fact that he intends to marry the Duke of Lavara's daughter..." His eyes never left the map. "...tells me everything about his plan." Without realizing it, Elara stepped closer. Cassian continued. "You know the Duke of Lavara." "For him..." "...power comes before family." "I doubt Lady Isara was ever asked whether she wanted this marriage." Elara's jaw tightened. Because every word he spoke was true. "Dorian needs time." Cassian stepped away from the map and turned toward her. He approached slowly. Stopping only a few paces away. "The smallest rumor that you're still alive..." His eyes locked onto hers. "...would bring everything he's built crashing down." Silence settled over the study once again. Outside, only the distant cries of seagulls drifted in from the harbor. This time, Cassian's voice softened. "My Queen..." Elara never looked away. "No matter how hard you try to stop water..." "...it always finds another path." "If it meets a rock..." "...it flows around it." "If it finds a wall..." "...it carves its way beneath it." "Even if it takes years..." "...it always reaches the sea." A cool breeze swept through the open window, stirring the crimson strands hidden within Elara's black hair. For the first time... Cassian saw something beyond her anger. He saw her exhaustion. "You need to become like water." "Appear still." "But never stop moving." "Your strength hasn't fully returned yet." He paused. Then continued. "Anger is a powerful weapon." "But only..." "...when the one wielding it hasn't lost control." His gaze never wavered. "If you let hatred guide you today..." His voice grew firm once more. "...this time, you may truly die." Elara said nothing. Her fingers no longer tapped against the stone. She simply stared out through the window. For the first time... She wondered whether waiting wasn't an act of cowardice after all. Perhaps... The bravest decision a ruler could make... Was sometimes to do nothing at all. After leaving the study, Elara returned directly to her room. The wound across her abdomen no longer burned the way it had during those first days. But every long walk... Every staircase... Was a reminder that her body had yet to fully recover. She settled into the armchair beside the window. Closing her eyes, she let out a quiet breath. Cassian's words echoed through her mind once again. "Be like water." She sighed. Waiting had always been the thing she hated most. Yet for the first time... She was beginning to understand that waiting wasn't cowardice. It was knowing when the time was right. The days that followed began to blur together. She rose early every morning. Took short walks through the palace gardens. And, much to her own frustration, tried to follow the physicians' orders not to push herself too hard. Remaining idle... Was torture. On the morning of the third day... She was strolling through the palace gardens when the elderly royal physician stepped into her path. "Your Majesty." Elara stopped. The physician carefully examined the bandages around her abdomen. After a moment, he gave an approving nod. "The wound is healing nicely." But Elara's first question had nothing to do with the wound itself "When will I be fully recovered?" A faint smile crossed the old physician's face. "That..." He chuckled softly. "...is the question of a ruler." Elara arched an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" "Because no one ever asks me, 'Will I recover?'" He adjusted the bandage one last time. "Kings and queens always ask the same question." "When can I return?" Despite herself, Elara smiled. "You may be right." The physician nodded. "But my answer remains the same." "A little more patience." Patience. Lately... It seemed to be the word she heard more than any other. Most afternoons were spent in Cassian's study. Maps spread across the massive desk. Sealed letters. Reports from the border. The latest news from Vareth. They had all become part of her daily routine. Sometimes they spent hours bent over the same map without exchanging a single word. Cassian read through report after report. Elara listened. The silence between them... Was no longer uncomfortable. Somehow... It had become familiar. One afternoon... Cassian slid a newly arrived report across the desk. "Dorian." Elara picked up the document. She read it in silence. New taxes. Orders to raise more soldiers. Fresh trade agreements with the Duchy of Lavara. New titles granted to noble families who had pledged their loyalty. When she reached the end, she quietly set the report back on the desk. "He's moving faster." Cassian nodded. "Yes." "Because he's afraid." Elara looked at him. "Are you really going to say that again?" A faint smile touched the corner of Cassian's mouth. "I'll keep saying it." "Why?" "Because it's true." Silence lingered between them. "If you forget that your enemy is afraid..." "...you'll miss the first mistake he makes." Elara offered no reply. But this time... She didn't argue either. On the fourth day... Elara stepped into the training yard for the first time. The palace guards were sparring. Steel rang against steel. The sound echoed across the courtyard. She stood quietly, watching them. Almost unconsciously... Her hand reached toward the empty space at her side. She missed the weight of her sword. The training commander noticed immediately and approached her. "Your Majesty." "Would you like a sword?" For a brief instant... The old fire returned to her eyes. She was about to say yes. Then... A sharp ache spread through her abdomen. The reminder was enough. She slowly shook her head. "Not yet." The commander bowed respectfully. "A wise decision." As Elara walked away from the training yard, she whispered to herself, "Not yet." The words no longer felt as heavy as they once had. Because for the first time... She understood that not yet... Didn't mean never. That evening... Cassian stood by the window of his study, overlooking the training yard. His eyes followed Elara as she quietly walked away. The Captain of the Royal Guard stepped beside him. "Your Majesty." Cassian didn't look away from the courtyard. "What do you think?" The captain watched Elara's retreating figure for a long moment. "She's changed." "Compared to the day she arrived..." "...she's a completely different person." Cassian gave a slight shake of his head. "No." The captain turned to him in surprise. Cassian's gaze remained fixed on Elara. "She hasn't changed." A brief silence followed. "She's simply..." "...learning to master her anger." The captain said nothing. At last, Cassian turned away from the window. Because they both understood the truth. A ruler was never at their most dangerous... When they carried a sword. They became truly dangerous... When they learned how to wait. As the days passed, life within Nerevia Palace gradually returned to its familiar rhythm. Servants moved quietly through the corridors. Guards changed shifts with practiced precision. Advisors hurried from one chamber to another, their arms filled with reports and sealed documents. But one thing had changed. Silence... Changed the moment Elara walked by. That morning... Two young maids were whispering to each other in one of the palace corridors. "Did you really see her?" "Shh!" Just then, Elara rounded the corner. Both women startled. They immediately lowered their heads. "Your Majesty." Elara acknowledged them with nothing more than a slight nod. Without breaking stride, she continued down the corridor. Silence lingered behind her for only a few seconds. Then the whispers returned. "Was that really her?" "Are you sure?" "They said she's the King's guest." "A guest?" "I think she's much more than that." By then... Elara was already too far away to hear them. But she could feel it. People's eyes were beginning to change. Later that afternoon... As she stepped out of Cassian's study, she crossed paths with two royal advisors. The conversation between them stopped instantly. Both men bowed respectfully. Neither spoke a word. As Elara passed, she caught them exchanging a glance from the corners of their eyes. Curiosity... Was the emotion people hid most poorly. Toward evening... While walking through the palace gardens, a young guard stepped aside to let her pass. "Your Majesty." Elara paused. She studied his face. He couldn't have been more than twenty. The excitement in his eyes was impossible to conceal. "May I ask you something?" The young guard blinked in surprise. "Of course, Your Majesty." "Why do you call me Your Majesty?" For several seconds, the guard remained silent. As though carefully searching for the right answer. "Because..." He cleared his throat. "...you still walk like a queen." Elara didn't answer. She simply inclined her head in quiet acknowledgment. Then continued on her way. The young guard watched her until she disappeared among the trees. That evening... The palace kitchens buzzed with activity. Cooks prepared the evening meal. Servants hurried between tables carrying trays and steaming dishes. In one corner of the kitchen, two young maids lowered their voices. "I saw her again today." "Really?" "Yes." "What was she like?" The woman paused, searching for the right words. "She wasn't what I expected." "What do you mean?" "When you hear the stories people tell about her..." "...you expect someone far more intimidating." "Isn't she?" The maid slowly shook her head. "No." "She just..." She hesitated. "...looked lonely." The two women fell silent. At that moment, the elderly head cook passed by, grumbling as he went. "Less talking. More working." The maids immediately scattered. But by then... Their conversation had already reached other ears. The following morning... The harbor bustled with life. Fishing boats returned to shore. Merchants unloaded crates from newly arrived ships. As two sailors strained beneath the weight of a heavy cargo chest, one lowered his voice. "Did you hear?" "Hear what?" "They say there's a secret guest staying at the palace." The other sailor chuckled. "Everyone's talking about that." "So who is she?" The first man shrugged. "No idea." "But they say the King himself is protecting her." An elderly merchant passing by caught the end of their conversation. He said nothing. He simply continued on his way. By afternoon... The rumor had already reached the marketplace. "The woman in the palace..." "Who is she?" "Some say she's a foreign noble." "I heard she's an aristocrat." "I heard..." "...she's a queen." With every retelling... Another detail was added. The truth... Changed from one voice to the next. But one thing remained the same. Someone was being hidden inside the palace. And now... The entire city knew it. As the evening sun painted the rooftops of Nerethis in shades of crimson... Cassian stood before the window of his study, looking out over the city. He was silent. Yet the silence brought him no peace. A knock echoed through the room. "Come in." The Captain of the Royal Guard entered. One look at his face was enough. "Your Majesty..." Cassian didn't turn around. "What is it?" The captain hesitated for only a moment. Then he spoke the words Cassian had been expecting. "It isn't just the palace anymore." Cassian slowly closed his eyes. The moment had finally arrived. "The city has begun to talk." Silence settled over the room. Cassian opened his eyes and looked out across Nerethis once more. One by one... The city's lights flickered to life. Almost too quietly to hear, he murmured to himself, "So..." "It begins." Because rumors... Were like water. Once they began to flow... No wall could hold them back forever.
