Chapter 15 The gunshot echoed through the abandoned mine. The lantern exploded into shards of glass, plunging the chamber into darkness. Amora instinctively ducked. “Ethan!” “I’m here,” his voice answered from somewhere beside her. Another shot ricocheted off the rocky walls. The sound echoed through the tunnel. “They’re inside the mine!” one of the attackers shouted. Ethan grabbed Amora’s hand. “Stay close.” The elderly woman lifted a small flashlight from her coat pocket and switched it on. Its narrow beam illuminated a narrow passage hidden behind a collapsed mining cart. “This way!” she whispered. “There isn’t much time.” Without hesitation, they followed her. The passage twisted sharply before opening into a small underground room. The woman pushed a rusted metal cabinet against the entrance. For the moment… They were hidden. Only then did she turn to face Amora. “My name is Evelyn Harper.” “I was Noah’s history teacher.” Amora blinked. “You taught him?” Evelyn smiled sadly. “I taught him to ask questions.” Her smile faded. “And that was exactly what made him dangerous.” ⸻ Outside their hiding place, footsteps echoed through the mine. The attackers were searching every tunnel. Ethan lowered his voice. “You said you know why they’re after us.” Evelyn nodded. “Because Noah didn’t just uncover corruption.” “He uncovered an organization.” Amora frowned. “What organization?” Evelyn hesitated. “They call themselves The Raven Circle.” The name sent a chill through the room. “The Raven Files…” Amora whispered. “They’re named after them?” “Yes.” Evelyn looked at the notebook in Amora’s hands. “Samuel Walters gave you the only surviving copy.” Ethan leaned forward. “Who are they?” “They’re not a gang.” “They’re not a political group.” “They’re something far more dangerous.” She took a slow breath. “They’re the people who truly control Blackwood.” ⸻ Silence settled over the room. Amora struggled to process what she had heard. “You mean… business owners?” Evelyn shook her head. “Business owners.” “Politicians.” “Lawyers.” “Developers.” “And people sworn to uphold the law.” Ethan exchanged a glance with Amora. “The page…” He remembered the loose sheet that had fallen from the Raven Files. “The traitor wears a badge.” He hadn’t told Amora about it yet. Not because he didn’t trust her… But because he didn’t know who else might hear. ⸻ Evelyn reached into her coat and removed a faded photograph. She handed it to Amora. “This was taken the summer before Noah disappeared.” Amora looked down. Her breath caught. The photograph showed Noah standing beside Evelyn… And a much younger Ethan. They were smiling outside the Blackwood Gazette. “You really did know each other,” she whispered. Ethan nodded quietly. “Noah was my best friend.” He looked away. “I never stopped looking for him.” Amora stared at him. “You blamed yourself.” “I still do.” “If I’d listened to him that night…” His voice broke. “…he wouldn’t have gone into the forest alone.” For a long moment, no one spoke. Then Amora reached over and gently placed her hand over his. “It wasn’t your fault.” Ethan looked at her, surprised. For the first time since they had met… The walls he had built around himself began to crack. ⸻ A sudden explosion shook the mine. Dust rained from the ceiling. “They’re using explosives,” Ethan said. “They’re trying to collapse the tunnels.” Evelyn hurried to the back wall. “There isn’t much time.” She knelt beside an old wooden chest hidden beneath a canvas tarp. Inside was a stack of journals. Letters. Maps. And one leather-bound diary. She handed the diary to Amora. “This belonged to your father.” Amora’s eyes widened. “My father?” “I thought he died in an accident.” Evelyn’s expression darkened. “That’s what they wanted everyone to believe.” The room fell silent. She looked directly into Amora’s eyes. “Your father wasn’t killed by chance.” “He was investigating the Raven Circle long before Noah.” Amora felt as if the ground had disappeared beneath her. “My father knew?” “Yes.” “And when Noah discovered the truth…” Evelyn’s voice trembled. “…he continued the investigation.” Another explosion rocked the chamber. The walls cracked. Small stones tumbled onto the floor. Ethan grabbed the diary and the Raven Files. “We have to move!” Evelyn pointed toward a narrow tunnel at the back of the room. “It leads out of the mine.” “What about you?” Amora asked. The older woman smiled gently. “I’ll slow them down.” “No!” “They’ll kill you.” “They’ve been trying for eight years.” She placed a small brass key into Amora’s hand. “Keep this safe.” “What does it open?” Evelyn smiled through her tears. “The place where your father hid the final truth.” Before Amora could ask another question, Evelyn pushed them toward the escape tunnel. “Go!” Reluctantly, Ethan pulled Amora into the darkness. Behind them… The elderly woman closed the heavy iron gate. A loud metallic clang echoed through the mine. Then came the voices of the attackers. “We found her!” A gunshot rang out. Amora screamed. “Evelyn!” But Ethan held her tightly. “We have to keep going.” With tears streaming down her face, Amora ran deeper into the tunnel, clutching the brass key that might finally unlock the answers her family had died to protect.
