Emma Time Keeper

871 Words
It was an ordinary day when Emma received an email from her company inviting her to participate in a time travel experiment. She had been working at the company for several years and had proven to be a trustworthy responsible employee. The email contained detailed instructions about how the experiment worked and how participants would be sent back in time to explore key events and moments in history. Emma was fascinated by the idea of time travel but also a little apprehensive. She had seen enough sci-fi movies to know that the consequences of meddling with the past could be disastrous. But her curiosity got the better of her and she accepted the offer to participate in the experiment. The day of the experiment arrived and Emma found herself in a bright sterile room with a group of other participants. They were all given special suits and helmets which they were told would protect them from the stresses of time travel. Emma felt a little nervous but also excited to see what the time machine had in store for her. Once all the participants had donned their suits and helmets they were led to a large metallic sphere which looked like something out of a science fiction movie. Emma couldn't help but marvel at its sleek design and futuristic appearance. As she stepped inside she could feel a strange sensation washing over her like a wave of energy. Suddenly the world around her vanished replaced by a blinding white light. When Emma opened her eyes she was standing in the middle of a bustling marketplace. The smells sounds and sights were overwhelming; the traders were shouting and haggling over their wares and exotic animals were being sold. Emma looked down at her suit and helmet which seemed to have transformed into a more appropriate outfit for the time and place though she felt no different. She could feel the excitement building within her and her heart raced as she began to explore the market. She had been sent back to ancient Rome and everything she saw was a marvel. She watched gladiators training for their battles in the coliseum saw chariot races and watched as people went about their daily lives. She was amazed by the sophistication of the city the aqueducts that brought water into the city and the grand architecture of temples and government buildings. Emma soon discovered that the time travel experiment had given her the ability to talk to people in the past. When she approached someone and spoke to them they could understand her perfectly and answer back in their own language. This was a revelation that added a whole new dimension to her adventure as she was able to communicate with the people around her and truly immerse herself in the past. As she explored ancient Rome Emma couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. She had always loved history but to be able to witness it first-hand was an experience like no other. She felt alive in a way she had never felt before and the sense of adventure was intoxicating. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months and Emma continued to explore the ancient city. She became involved in the politics of the time and started to gain favour with some of the more powerful figures in the government. She found herself drawn to a handsome young senator and they began a passionate affair. It seemed that nothing could stop her from fully immersing herself in the time and place and she was happier than she had ever been in her life. But then things started to go wrong. Emma noticed that her skin was starting to feel a little different as if it was ageing faster than it should. It was a small thing at first but soon she began to notice other symptoms such as her hair growing increasingly grey and her joints becoming stiff and painful. She realized with horror that by travelling back in time she had unwittingly entered a world where she had no immunity to the diseases and illnesses of the time. Despite her growing concerns Emma continued to explore ancient Rome hoping to find a way to put things right. But the more she tried to change things the worse they seemed to get. Her relationship with the senator soured and she was forced to flee the city when she was caught up in a political scandal. She had no choice but to return to the time machine and hope to be transported back to her own time. When Emma stepped out of the machine she was shocked to find that years had passed. Her once youthful body had aged dramatically and the world around her was unrecognisable. She had missed years of her life and everything had changed. The time travel experiment had been a success at least in the sense that Emma had discovered an incredible wondrous world of the past. But it had come at a terrible cost as she realised that travelling through time wasn't necessarily something she should have messed with. The effects of her adventure had affected her in ways she could not have predicted.
