Chapter 4

Where had Roselle truly made a mistake? Was it the second year of college when she started crushing on Chris? Or was it that day in the hospital when she no longer kept her feelings to herself and confessed to him? Because being with Chris was a mistake and she became sure of that when he decided to choose Clara over their daughter. “I'll donate to Clara first. Ava will be fine until I'm able to donate again” Chris said. Roselle's fists curled, her nails digging into her palm, her jaws clenched. With her daughter's blood covering his palm, he chose the love of his life. She meant nothing to him. But the worst part? She had always known this. “You can't do this to us! You can't do this to Ava!” Roselle's voice rose, weak and broken. Ava had spent five years loving him as a father. She had always slept late just to see him, knowing she wouldn't see him the next morning since he goes to work so early. Chris acted like he couldn't hear her, and followed one of the nurses outside to have his blood drawn and donated to Clara. “Ms. Hayde. Let's hope your child hold out until your husband will be able to donate some blood to her” The doctor walked out after his words, leaving Roselle alone with Ava. Roselle settled down into the chair beside Ava's bed. She held her hand, placing her head on it and muttering under her breath. “Please….” She didn't even know what she was pleading for, but deep down, she knew it was for her daughter's safe recovery. Ava's fingers shook slightly in her hand, and she quickly lifted her head. “Ava?” A tear slid down the corner of Ava's eyes. “I don't want to leave you, Mommy” Roselle stood up from the chair, cupping Ava's face and giving her a pretty smile. “You won't leave me, sweetie. You'll be fine” Ava nodded slowly, her lips spreading into a small smile. “I'll hold on like the doctor said. I'll wait until Daddy can give me some of his blood” Roselle's lips parted for a moment. She sank back into the chair with her heart filled with despair. Ava had heard everything. She had heard how her Daddy had pathetically chosen Clara over her. The door opened and that forced Roselle's face to snap. She was shocked to see Chris's grandmother at the door, her face filled with worry. “Granny Vienna” Roselle's voice trembled. She walked over to her immediately and the woman pulled her into a hug. “I saw the news, Roselle.” They broke the hug. “Are you okay? Did you not get hurt much?” Vienna Hayde. Chris's grandmother and the backbone behind their family business. “I'm fine, Granny. But Ava……” Roselle snapped her face to the back and Granny Vienna rushed towards the bed, her face cladded in shock as she touched Ava's face. “What's wrong with my granddaughter? Why are the doctors not treating her?” Roselle explained the situation to Granny in tears and the woman found it hard to close her mouth when she was done. “You mean he chose to save that vile woman first?” Granny Vienna looked over at Clara's bed with disgust. “Christopher Hayde!” She yelled. “Where the hell is he?” Roselle was shocked at how loud Granny was, the terror in her voice making her body shake slightly. Footsteps echoed loudly and Clara's attending doctor arrived with Chris behind him. Once Chris sighted his grandmother, his face twitched in surprise and he walked towards her. “Grandma. What—” He wasn't allowed to finish his words when Granny's hand ran across his face, a slap landing on his cheeks. Roselle gasped and her hand covered her mouth immediately. The doctors stared in shock, Chris held his face in disbelief, and Granny Vienna fumed in anger right in front of him. “Grandma, did you just slap me?” Chris's voice trembled and his words dropped slowly. “You are an ungrateful fellow, Christopher!” Granny pointed a finger at him. “A foolish one at that!” “You donated blood to a wench that had nothing to do with you and left your daughter to die?” Roselle didn't want to make a fuss out of what had happened and she definitely didn't want the matter to escalate into what she wouldn't be able to handle, but at that moment, Granny Vienna was unstoppable. Like a Porsche with no brakes. “There seems to be a misunderstanding, Grandma. Ava is not going to die, I'll make sure to save her” Chris explained. Roselle scoffed before Granny could respond. Words burned on her tongue, wanting to be spoken but she refused to speak. She chose to stay silent instead of confronting him because she knew it wouldn't change anything. He'd already donated to Clara, and the doctor was here to take her out for treatment. “Get lost, Christopher. I don't want to see your pathetic face for any moment longer” Chris didn't understand why his grandmother was so worked up. He believed he hadn't done anything wrong, because even though he had chosen to save Ava secondly, he was still going to donate his blood to her. He obeyed his grandmother's command, leaving the ward without a word while Clara was wheeled after him. “Get the attending doctor, Roselle” Granny Vienna ordered and her tone still showed how angry she was. “I'll donate my blood to Ava” Roselle's eyes widened in shock and her breath stopped for a moment. Did she hear Granny right? Did she really just say she will donate to Ava? “You are O-Negative, Granny?” Roselle croaked. “Of course” Granny's face tilted the back slightly with a frown. “What are you waiting for? Get the doctor quickly” Roselle dashed out of the room hurriedly, finding the doctor and returning back to the ward in a few minutes. If Granny donated her blood, then her daughter could live. But when she opened the door to the ward, her eyes widened in surprise, face cladded with confusion. The room was empty and filled with silence. Her daughter was no longer on the bed, and Granny was no longer standing there. Both of them were gone.
