CHAPTER 10My telephone started ringing at seven in the morning. I let it ring for a while, then picked it up and it was the doctor. “Straighten me out, will you?” he said. “What happened and what does it mean? Did you find out something about Lorrie?” “Not exactly,” I said. “I told you there’s a cop interested in the case. I think he’s more interested than he ought to be. His name is Clay Saunders. He surprised me last night and found out your name. That’s what happened.” “I don’t see what difference it makes. What could he have to do with me?” “I’m not sure. I’m just trying to avoid embarrassment for you.” “Listen—please don’t run out on me—” “It’s only a question of whether I can be useful,” I said. “What else have you found?” “Not much.
