CHAPTER 12“Hello, Dingo,” I said. “Yeh—hi.” “What’ve you got?” “Oh nothin’—I was just—” “Passing by.” “Yeh.” “How’s Big Danny?” He shrugged. I leaned against the door and waited. You ask these characters questions, it only confuses them. “—Russo—” he said finally. “What about it?” “Teresa.” “All right. Teresa what?” “You wanna see her?” “I don’t know. Should I?” He shrugged some more. It was like an all-over twitch, as if somebody were tickling the soles of his feet. “Does she want to see me?” I asked. “Yeh.” “Is she working tonight?” “Nah.” “Can she get over here?” Another shrug. “All right,” I said. “Nine-thirty tonight. You put her in a taxi. I’ll pay for it when she gets here. And I’ll send her back.” “Okay.” I waited. “Is that all?” I asked. “Yeh, I guess so.”
