Chapter 5 – Blurred Lines

1180 Words
Jason didn’t go to sleep. He just sat there, staring at the screenshot. The room was dark, lit only by the dull glow from his phone. He stared at the message until the screen dimmed, then tapped it again. Still there. Talia’s name. Her chat. Her words. I told you I’d handle him. Just wait. He read it over and over until the words blurred. His stomach turned. His chest tightened. His throat burned like he had swallowed fire. He didn’t know what to think. He didn’t want to believe it. But the more he looked at it, the more he started to question everything. The video, the photos, the messages. And now this. A direct message. From her. To someone named Ash. Jason didn’t know who Ash was. But the message was clear. He started thinking about the way Talia looked at him. How she hesitated when she talked about her past. How she always seemed to leave out details. And how every time he got close, something pulled her away. He wanted to trust her. He really did. But doubt was a poison, and tonight, it was dripping through every vein in his body. The next morning, Jason moved like a ghost. The school hallways were loud, but he couldn’t hear anything. He couldn’t focus on faces. The walls felt too close, the lights too bright. Every step felt heavier than the last. In first period, Sean dropped into the seat beside him like always. His voice was quiet. “Coach told me,” he said. “About the scout.” Jason didn’t respond. Sean leaned in. “I’m sorry, man. That’s messed up.” Jason just stared ahead. “Yeah.” “You know I’m with you, right?” Sean said. “Whatever this is, we’re gonna ride it out.” Jason turned his head, looked him in the eye. “Are we?” Sean blinked. “What do you mean?” Jason didn’t answer. Sean looked down. “Come on, J.” Before Jason could speak again, the teacher walked in. Class started. But Jason wasn’t there. Not really. Across the school, Jade stood in front of her locker. As soon as she opened it, a folded note fell out again. It landed softly by her feet. She picked it up quickly, eyes scanning the hallway to make sure no one had seen. It was the third one this week. She unfolded it slowly. You shine without even trying. You don’t need to fake anything. You’re art in motion. And I see you. The words hit her harder than she expected. She didn’t understand why they made her chest flutter. She wasn’t used to being spoken to like this. Not without being looked at. Not without being touched. This... this was different. She folded the note carefully and slid it into her back pocket. Her fingers stayed there for a moment longer, as if she didn’t want to let it go. Her friends were nearby, laughing about something stupid. She glanced at them, then turned back to her locker. She didn’t show them the note. Not yet. During lunch, Jason didn’t eat. He skipped the cafeteria altogether and headed to the back stairwell behind the gym. The place was empty, quiet, untouched. He sat on the steps, his sandwich unopened, his thoughts a mess. Talia found him there. She walked slowly, like she wasn’t sure she should be there. Jason looked up when he heard her steps. She stopped a few feet away. “I heard about the scout.” Jason looked down. “Yeah.” “I’m sorry.” “Don’t be.” She hesitated. “You think I did it.” Jason didn’t reply. “I can see it in your face,” she said. “You’re wondering if I’m the one messing with you.” Jason looked up. His eyes were dull. “Someone sent me a screenshot.” Her eyes widened. “A message,” he continued. “From you. To someone named Ash.” She stiffened. “What did it say?” Jason recited the words from memory. “I told you I’d handle him. Just wait.” Talia took a step back like she’d been slapped. “I didn’t write that,” she said. “Then who did?” “I don’t know.” “Are you sure?” She didn’t answer immediately. Jason stood up too. “Because every time I try to believe you, something else shows up. A photo. A message. A video.” Talia’s voice cracked. “You think I’m lying?” “I don’t know what to think,” Jason said. “But I’m tired of being scared.” She stepped closer. “I’m not doing this to you.” Jason didn’t move. “Then why does it keep happening?” Talia’s eyes welled up, but no tears fell. “You said you believed me.” “I did.” “Then why can’t you now?” Jason looked away. “Because it hurts too much.” She stood there for a long second. Then she whispered, “I thought you were different.” “I thought you were too.” She turned and walked off. He didn’t follow. That night, Jade sat on her bed with the three letters spread out like cards. She read each one slowly, letting the words sink in. She didn’t know who wrote them, but each letter made her feel something real. Something deep. She had always been told she was beautiful, but never like this. Not seen like this. She picked up the third one again. Her fingers traced the messy handwriting. She wanted to know who it was. She wanted to meet him. Whoever he was. Then, without thinking, she grabbed a pen and paper. Wrote two lines. Who are you? Why do you know me so well? She didn’t sign it. Just folded it neatly and placed it in the back of her locker. Maybe he’d find it. Maybe he wouldn’t. She didn’t care. Not fully. But she hoped. At midnight, Jason’s phone buzzed again. Same number. This time the message said, Ash says hi. Attached was a photo. It was Talia, standing at a convenience store. She was smiling at the cashier, holding a snack in one hand, money in the other. She looked peaceful. Normal. The photo was taken from outside the window. Jason’s stomach turned. Another message followed. You think you’re her hero. But you’re the story she’s rewriting. He dropped the phone. Picked it up again. He stared at the photo. Then zoomed in. Tried to find something. A reflection. A clue. Nothing. Only her. And a pain that felt too big to carry alone. He didn’t know who to trust anymore. Not Talia. Not Sean. Not even himself. And as he sat on the floor with his phone in his hand and that message on his screen, he made a quiet decision. He was going to find out who Ash was. Even if it meant losing everyone he thought he knew.
