Chapter 2

1074 Words
My soul drifted uncontrollably into the bathing chamber. Raine stepped into the pool completely naked, surrounded by rising steam as he leaned back against the edge of the stone bath. His broad chest and back were covered with countless old scars, each one a reminder of the battles he had survived. Eve approached with a towel in her hands. The moment she saw those scars, she instinctively stepped back. Her eyes were filled with fear and disgust. Her fingers trembled uncontrollably. She was afraid of him. How ridiculous. When she watched me being poisoned to death, she hadn't been afraid at all. At that moment, all I wanted was for Raine to turn around and see the hypocrisy hidden in this woman's eyes. I floated beside him and waved my hand in front of his face. When I was alive, I had been terrified of him. But now, I desperately hoped he could somehow sense my existence. My body was still buried beneath the soil in the greenhouse of the family estate. The earth was filled with insects and rodents. Soon, they would chip away what remained of me. If Raine could remember the three years we spent as husband and wife and help me get revenge, I would be grateful. Or if he didn't want to, I only hoped he would at least find my body and burn it. I had always loved sunlight. I didn't want to rot away in the dark underground. But unfortunately, my desperate attempts meant nothing. Raine showed no reaction. He simply closed his eyes and rested. Eve took a deep breath. Then she removed her clothes and bit her rosy lips. Her fingertips gently traced over Rayne's firm, rounded hips, while her full breasts pressed against his back. The tip of her tongue followed the old scar at the back of his neck, slowly moving down toward his chest. In the next second, Raine grabbed her and pinned her against the edge of the pool. His eyes were as dark as the endless northern night. He stared directly at her face. "Your Majesty..." Eve whispered, her voice soft and trembling. "Why are you looking at me like that?" Raine's voice was cold. "I heard that while I was away, you returned to the Linton estate without reporting it to me." The moment she heard that, Eve's legs went weak. She immediately dropped to her knees on the stone floor. "Yes, Your Majesty. My mother suddenly fell ill, so I returned home to take care of her for a few days. Please forgive me." Hearing the word "mother" made my dead soul ache. Back then, my mother had sworn to me that the Linton family would never abandon either of their daughters. But after Eve married, everything didn't go well for her. Then she saw how powerful and handsome Raine had become. She regretted giving up the position of Wolf Queen and wanted it back. And my mother was the one who personally helped her steal it. She pretended to be seriously ill and tricked me into returning home. I wanted to ask her one question. We were both her daughters. Why did she choose to fulfill Eve's desire and ambition, even if it meant killing me? But when Raine heard Eve's explanation, he didn't get angry. He just squeezed Eve's breasts. "Since your mother was ill, it was only right for you, as her daughter, to return and check on her." I froze in midair. I couldn't believe what I had just heard. The Raine I knew would never have spoken to me with such understanding. On our wedding night, he had bitten into my skin and coldly told me that I was nothing more than a gift from the Linton family. He said I belonged to him and had no right to have a will of my own. He said I must never leave the werewolf territory for the rest of my life, and that I should never expect even the slightest bit of mercy from him. During our three years of marriage, aside from sharing a bed, Raine rarely even sat at the same table to eat with me. "Thank you for your kindness, Your Majesty," Eve said, unable to hide her excitement. "I swear I will serve you wholeheartedly and never leave your side again." Eve could barely contain her excitement. She rose and moved closer to Rayne, her gaze filled with affection and anticipation. Rayne's expression changed instantly. His body went still for a moment in the water, as if something unexpected had caught him off guard. The moon broke through the clouds. Its silver light fell directly onto the Wolf King's head. I had heard that during the full moon, the bond between a Wolf King and his destined mate would become stronger. Raine suddenly grabbed his chest. His breathing became uneven, as if he was suffering from unbearable pain. The witchcraft my mother used could block a Wolf King's ability to sense his mate's soul. But I was only a human. I had never even experienced the ritual that would create such a bond. The magic was powerful enough to hide the truth of my death. But under the light of the full moon, cracks finally appeared. I had never seen Raine look like he was in pain before. For the first time, I felt confused. Raine's breathing grew heavier. His eyes were suddenly filled with emptiness, like someone who had lost something precious but didn't know what it was. Then, just as quickly, the feeling disappeared. My mother's spell forced it back down. Eve continued trying to charm the Wolf King, unaware of what had just happened. Raine frowned in irritation. Perhaps he thought it was simply the restlessness caused by his wolf awakening during the 15th night of the lunar cycle. Suddenly, a guard's urgent voice came from outside. "Your Majesty, the border wolf packs have started a massive uprising!" Raine immediately stood up from the bath. He grabbed his robe, wrapped it around himself, and left without looking back. Eve watched his retreating figure. The smile disappeared from her face. All her attempts tonight had failed. She had planned to become pregnant with the Wolf King's child on the very first night of his return, securing her position as the Wolf Queen forever. But all her careful planning had fallen apart. Her nails dug deep into her palm.
