Chapter 20: The Factory Of Broken Promises

The map lay unfolded across the chapel altar. One destination. One final clue. The Sterling Glass Factory. Nathan Blackwood folded the map carefully and slipped it into his jacket. He looked around at Lena Brooks, Olivia Grant, Mrs. Eleanor Hayes, and Victor Blackwood. "We leave immediately." Victor stepped forward. "Nathan... don't rush into this." Nathan's voice was calm but firm. "Richard Sterling has Daniel." "If we wait, we may lose him forever." Lena reached for Nathan's hand. "Then we go together." Nathan looked at her for a long moment before nodding. "Together." --- Night had fallen by the time they reached the abandoned Sterling Glass Factory. The enormous building stood like a ghost at the edge of Ashwood City. Broken windows reflected flashes of lightning. Rust covered the old iron gates. A faded company sign still hung above the entrance. STERLING GLASS INDUSTRIES Victor stared at the building. "I never thought I'd come back here." Nathan noticed the pain in his grandfather's eyes. "What happened here?" Victor sighed. "This is where Aaron discovered someone had been secretly selling Blackwood patents." "He confronted Richard." "And from that day..." "Our families became enemies." --- Inside the factory... Daniel sat tied to a metal chair. His wrists were sore, but his spirit remained unbroken. Richard Sterling entered carrying an old wooden box. He placed it on the table. "You've been wondering who you are." Daniel looked at him steadily. "I don't need you to tell me." Richard smiled. "No." "But you need this." He opened the box. Inside were baby photographs, hospital records, and a tiny knitted blanket embroidered with the initials D.B. Daniel's heart skipped a beat. "They're yours." Richard leaned closer. "You are Daniel Blackwood." "The child everyone forgot." Daniel's voice remained steady. "They didn't forget." "They were kept away." Richard's smile faded. "You sound just like Aaron." --- Meanwhile... Nathan and the others quietly entered the factory through a broken side door. Olivia whispered, "The power is still running." Nathan looked up. "Someone wants this place operational." Lena pointed toward muddy footprints on the dusty floor. "They're fresh." Mrs. Eleanor Hayes nodded. "They lead downstairs." --- As they descended into the basement, they heard voices. Richard's voice echoed through the corridor. "The Blackwood family stole everything from me." Daniel replied calmly, "No." "Greed stole everything from you." Richard's face twisted with anger. "You know nothing!" Daniel didn't flinch. "I know that people who speak about revenge every day stopped living years ago." Richard raised his hand to strike him— "That's enough." Nathan's voice thundered through the room. Everyone turned. Nathan stood at the entrance. Lena was beside him. Victor, Olivia, Mrs. Hayes, and two security officers followed behind. Richard slowly smiled. "I knew you'd come." Nathan stepped forward. "Let him go." Richard laughed. "You've become just like your father." "And that will destroy you." --- Before anyone could move, a hidden alarm sounded. Steel doors slammed shut throughout the basement. The exits were sealed. Olivia rushed to one of the doors. "It's locked!" Richard calmly removed a remote control from his pocket. "This factory was rebuilt with emergency security systems." "No one leaves until I'm finished." Nathan stared at him. "What do you want?" Richard looked at Victor. "I want the truth." Victor frowned. "You already know the truth." Richard shook his head. "No." "I want them to hear it from you." The room fell silent. Victor's shoulders slumped. He looked at Nathan. Then at Daniel. Finally, he spoke. "Fifteen years ago..." "Aaron discovered that Richard wasn't acting alone." Nathan frowned. "There was another traitor?" Victor nodded slowly. "Yes." "And that person was..." A loud gunshot echoed through the factory. Everyone ducked. The bullet shattered a glass pipe above Victor's head. Water poured into the room. A masked figure stepped out from the shadows, holding a pistol. Even Richard looked stunned. "You..." The masked stranger removed the mask. Victoria Sterling. Her eyes burned with desperation. "I'm tired of living in everyone's shadow." Richard stared at his daughter in disbelief. "Victoria, what are you doing?" She pointed the pistol at both Richard and Nathan. "I'm ending this." "If there are no heirs..." "There will be no empire to fight over." Lena instinctively stepped in front of Nathan. Nathan pulled her behind him. "No!" Victoria's finger tightened on the trigger. At that exact moment... Daniel kicked the chair backward, crashing into Victoria's legs. The gun fired. The bullet struck a steel support beam. A deafening c***k echoed through the factory. The ceiling began to tremble. Chunks of concrete rained down. Olivia shouted, "The building is collapsing!" Nathan rushed toward Daniel while Lena ran to help Victor. Richard stood frozen, staring at the crumbling ceiling. For the first time in years... Fear replaced his anger. As the walls shook violently, Nathan finally reached Daniel and cut the ropes binding his wrists. The two cousins looked at each other. Without saying a word... They embraced. The promise that had survived fifteen years had finally reunited the Blackwood family. But their reunion lasted only a heartbeat. A massive steel beam snapped overhead. It crashed toward Lena. Nathan turned in horror. "Lena!" End of Chapter 20 By Jasmine
