The haunting howl rolled across the mountains like thunder.
Every wolf surrounding the cabin froze.
The Blood Fang leader's ears stood erect as he searched the darkness beyond the trees. His confident expression slowly faded into one of unease.
"Impossible," he growled.
"They said he was dead."
A second howl answered the first—deeper, stronger, commanding absolute authority.
The wolves surrounding the cabin instinctively lowered their heads.
Inside, Evelyn's eyes widened.
"It can't be..." she whispered.
Malik turned toward his grandmother.
"Who is it?"
She remained silent for a long moment before answering.
"The last Alpha of the Black Moon Pack."
"I thought our pack was destroyed," Malik said.
"So did everyone else."
Outside, the forest came alive. Birds burst from the treetops, and the wind whipped through the pines. From the shadows emerged an enormous silver wolf, larger than any Ethan had ever seen. His fur shimmered beneath the moonlight like polished steel, and a long scar crossed his left eye.
The wolves of the Blood Fang Pack backed away.
The silver wolf stopped several yards from the cabin.
His amber eyes settled on Malik.
Then, to everyone's astonishment, he transformed.
Standing where the wolf had been was a tall Black man in his early forties with broad shoulders, long braided hair, and piercing amber eyes. Scars covered his arms, each one telling the story of a battle survived.
"My name is Asher King," he said calmly.
"I am the last Alpha of the Black Moon Pack."
The Blood Fang leader snarled.
"You should have stayed hidden."
"I did," Asher replied. "Long enough."
His gaze shifted to Malik.
"I was waiting until you were ready."
Malik's heart pounded.
"Ready for what?"
"To learn who you truly are."
---
Inside the cabin, Asher explained everything.
Seventeen years earlier, the Blood Fang Pack had launched a brutal attack against the Black Moon Pack. Their goal was not simply to win the war—it was to wipe out the Black Moon bloodline forever.
Malik's parents had fought until their final breath to protect their newborn son.
"They gave their lives so you could escape," Asher said quietly.
Evelyn lowered her head, unable to hide the tears in her eyes.
"I took you from the battlefield," she whispered.
"You were only a few hours old."
Malik struggled to process the truth.
"My parents..."
"They were heroes," Asher replied.
"They believed you would become the Alpha our people needed."
Malik shook his head.
"I'm not an Alpha."
"You don't know how to lead."
"I can barely control my own wolf."
Asher stepped closer.
"An Alpha isn't born knowing how to lead."
"He becomes one by choosing others before himself."
Ethan watched silently from across the room. He had never seen Malik look so lost.
---
Suddenly, Asher turned toward Ethan.
"You should leave."
The room fell silent.
Ethan frowned.
"Why?"
"Because staying with Malik will put you in greater danger than you can imagine."
"I'm already in danger."
"You don't understand."
Asher's expression grew serious.
"The Blood Moon is approaching."
"When it rises, every unmated Alpha will be forced to answer the Moon's call."
Ethan blinked.
"What does that have to do with me?"
Asher looked directly into his eyes.
"Everything."
He took a slow breath.
"There is an ancient prophecy."
"'When the heir of the Black Moon finds the soul marked by destiny, love will either unite the packs... or drown them all in blood.'"
The room became deathly quiet.
Ethan felt a strange warmth spread across the back of his neck.
He reached up instinctively.
His fingers brushed against smooth skin...
Except it wasn't smooth anymore.
A glowing silver crescent moon had appeared just below his neck.
Malik stared in horror.
"No..."
Evelyn gasped.
"The Moon has marked him."
Outside, the Blood Fang leader smiled as if he had expected this all along.
"So the prophecy has begun."
He raised his hand toward the sky.
"Find the boy."
"Alive."
Before anyone could react, dozens of Blood Fang wolves charged from every direction, smashing through the magical barrier surrounding the cabin.
The blue light shattered like glass.
The protection spell was broken.
Asher transformed back into his massive silver wolf with a deafening roar.
Malik's bones cracked as his own transformation began.
Ethan stood frozen between them.
The battle for his life had begun.
