Chapter 6

“THAT’S not a big deal.  If didn’t have a car, then I would also be walking around the campus like the other students. Don’t you like my company?” Kurt asked. “I didn’t say that.  It’s just that, I don’t want to impose myself on you.”  Barbie could not believe that Kurt would be willing to walk just to accompany her.  Is she that important to Kurt?  What did he see in her?  Does he also treat other girls the way he treats her?  “I’m not complaining.  The truth is, I’m happy tonight because you are with me.” He smiled when he looked at her. Barbie could feel the burning sensation on her cheeks.  Probably, her cheeks had turned red.  Her heartbeat was racing a while ago and now it became faster. She could not utter any word. She could not even believe that one of the most good-looking guys in Saint Matthew University was holding her hands tonight. Even his smile was captivating.  She can’t decide if she should be happy about this or be worried.  Is Kurt serious about his words? “There they are.  They might have been waiting for us ages ago.” Kurt’s words interrupted her thoughts. “Who are you referring to?” Barbie was puzzled. “I am talking about my friends. They’re already in front of Dorm 5.”  His eyes were looking forward. When Barbie turned to what Kurt was looking at, she noticed his car which was parked in front of the gate of Dorm 5.  Enrico was standing beside the car together with the other guy. Tsk! They might have been waiting for quite some time now. “Finally, you’re here.  Thanks to you, we can now go home.”  Enrico greeted them with a smile. Barbie felt uneasy by what Enrico had said.  Maybe it’s her fault that they had waited for a long time. “My apologies, if I had kept you waiting,” Barbie said sincerely. “Hush! Don’t mind them.  They are used to going home late,” Kurt interrupted. She turned to Kurt.  “But it’s my fault.  I should be guilty of making you wait. You and your friends’ home are far from here, most especially you.  You’re staying outside the campus, right?” “No problem.  I have my car.  Don’t worry about us.  C’mon, you should get inside now.  You might be scolded by your houseparent if you stay longer.” Kurt was reminding her as he handed her bandurria. “Thank you very much,” she said happily when she took the bandurria. Kurt was also smiling when he nodded at her. Barbie turned to Kurt’s friends.  “I have to go,” she said and bid them good night. They all bid her goodbye. “HEY, WHY did the rehearsal take so long?  It’s already late,” Genevieve greeted when she saw her.  They entered their room at the same time. Genevieve was carrying a dipper containing her toiletries.  She might have gone to the washing area. Barbie looked at her watch.  It’s already eight forty-five. “The rehearsal ended at eight-thirty,” she explained.  Then she went straight to her bed.  She put her bandurria under her bed. She sat at her bed and turned to Genevieve.  “Have you eaten dinner?” She already knew the answer but she just wanted a confirmation. “What do you think?  I just brushed my teeth.”  Genevieve raised the dipper she was carrying.  “I can no longer wait for you.  Besides, there is a curfew at the kitchen so, I had to eat alone.  I don’t want to get hungry while waiting for you.” Barbie kept quiet.  She understands what her friend was implying. There is a rule at the dorm that says, use of the kitchen is only until eight in the evening. While the dining area is open until eight-thirty. “I’m sorry about that.  Have you eaten dinner?” Genevieve asked as she sat beside her. Barbie shook her head. “Wait, I have something in my cabinet.  I will just give it to you.” Genevieve put the dipper under her bed.  Then she opened her cabinet.  She took out something and placed it beside her.  It was a pack of crackers. “Take whatever you can eat,” Genevieve said. “Thank you.  Can I get two?  I am already starving,” Barbie explained while opening the pack. “It’s okay.  You need that.  You might not be able to sleep on an empty stomach.” Barbie smiled.  What Genevieve said was true.  She was not used to starving herself.  Her mind will not work if she is hungry.  She could not even sleep without eating dinner.  That is why she always keeps a biscuit on her cabinet so, she can eat anytime.  But her supply runs out so, she accepted Genevieve’s offer of food. “How was the rehearsal?” Genevieve asked. “The rehearsal went smoothly.” “Did you go home alone?” Barbie chewed her food before she answered.  “No, you will be surprised if I tell you who brought me home,” she smiled. Genevieve’s eyes widened.  “Huh?  Then who was that?” She did not answer at once.  Instead, she took her personal water jug and drank from it.  After she was satisfied, she faced her friend. “Can I finish my food first?  I will tell you all about it later.” “Okay,” Genevieve answered.  She took her shoulder bag and brought out a notebook. While Barbie was eating silently, she kept looking at her friend. If Genevieve was not doing anything, then she keeps herself busy with her books and notes.  She is intelligent and studious, too. “Those who are still reviewing their lessons, stay at the study hall.  I am going to turn off the light.”  They heard the student assistant’s announcement. When Barbie looked at her watch, it was already nine in the evening.  It is already lights off in all rooms.  She turned to Genevieve. “C’mon, let’s go outside,” she stated.  She drank water before getting off her bed.  She and Genevieve just got off their bed at the same time the light went out.  She went outside the room and Genevieve followed her. “Do you know who brought me home?”  Barbie asked when they were seated at the study hall. “Who? Let me guess.  One of the members of Rondalla?” “No. Kurt brought me home,” Barbie declared.  She had already expected that her friend will be surprised.  But she could not believe her reaction. “Oh…!” Genevieve’s mouth was opened.  She was not only surprised.  But she was dumbfounded.  “How did that happen?  You left your phone!  I was the one who took the plug out from the outlet.  You left your phone charging.”  Her eyes were almost bulging. “I intentionally left my phone.  It was already low in battery so, it was no use.  I just forgot to tell you about it.  But what has my phone got to do with Kurt?  Can you not believe what I just told you?” “That’s obvious. You already know what’s the use of the phone.  Or you used it before you went out and just didn’t want to tell me about it?” Genevieve said in disbelief. Her mind was suddenly in deep thought.  What was her friend saying? What does the cellphone get to do with…Oh, no! She smacked her own forehead when she understood what Genevieve’s words were implying. “I didn’t call Kurt just like I told you before.  But when the rehearsal ended, Kurt was already waiting outside the music room.  He came to fetch his friend, Enrico, who was also a member of the Rondalla.”  Barbie tried to explain. “You and this Enrico went out at the same time then Kurt saw you, is that it?” “Yeah,” she said while nodding her head. “So, you went back to the dorm on his car?” “No.  But we walked while…holding hands.”  Barbie was not supposed to tell this but she could not contain the happiness, excitement, and the throbbing of her heart while in the company of Kurt.
