Louise's POV
My head shakes automatically as my eyes ping around the area, just trying to comprehend the words that are being thrown at me so effortlessly, as if this isn't an already strange conversation to be having. With every single person my eyes locked on to, I started to see details I never saw the first time my view circled around and over them. Like the fact that every single one of them has wings as well. They are also of all different ages and races, and are somehow all smiling at me. No judgment or indifference, just happiness. Well, except for the main judge at the center of everyone and directly in front of me.
"Good fit for what? I don't even know what THIS is. All of you look pleasant enough, but I am not signing up for anything until I know exactly what I am getting into." I state in utter confusion as I look around, wanting to run back home, but since I have no idea where I am at, I know that would probably be impossible. Especially with the blinding fact that I am dead. So I think that closes the idea of going back at all. I can't get the fear out of my body, but as I continue to pace, I do notice that all the people look very understanding of my panicking.
Maybe they have been through the same. "This.. Honestly.. Is another dimension." She starts as I interrupt, just assuming I know what this is, even though I am the one asking the questions. "Purgatory?" She smiles but shakes her head. "No, not exactly.. We are, I guess you could say, an extension of Heaven.. We are divine beings that live an alternate life than the angels.. But we have a very special task.. To bring people together." She explains as best as she can to me, while I can't seem to stop my head from shaking and my eyebrows from furrowing.
"Ok that's nice for all of you, but what does that have to do with me? I am not this being that you all are, and I can't even get myself a date, so I don't know how to bring other people together." I state with confusion consuming me, so I'm sure it's all over my features. "Actually, you can be made into a being like us with our approval. But give yourself a little more credit, my dear. You're a natural at this. Beings with these natural capabilities that you have are few and far between. You're a rarity," she declares, as if I should know what that means in this instance, but I am still not following.
I think that she can see this on my face so she shakes her head, then reaches forward and pulls something from the top of her desk. When her hands raise I can see that it is a paper. She straightens it before clearing her throat, to I assume explain how I am a 'natural'. "In the span of your 27 years of life.. Did you know.. That you have brought together 110 couples? 110 in your lifetime! And 6 in one night! One night!" she squeaks out in excitement as I receive more applause than before, getting louder by the second.
The people's smiles are growing just as much as the woman's in front of me is. I think about this as I shake my head. That can't be right, can it? "What? No I haven't. That can't be possible. Can it? 110?" I ask while outwardly denying her comments as she giggles and waving my comment off as she snaps her fingers with that same list is instantly appearing out of thin air and right in front of my face. My eyes ping back and forth over the couples I have brought together that I didn't even know I brought together.
I know almost every single name on the list. My mouth drops open, knowing that I see the numbers, but that high of a number is hard to believe. It is even noticed that at the very end are my group of girlfriends with men and even my sister. I would assume all the men I introduced to them tonight. I watch the paper zip back across the room to her as she takes it into her hand, reading silently to herself as her smile widens in approval. I look over at Annalee as she gives me two thumbs up while her smile grows. I send a small smile right back to her before I am glancing back at the woman who is still reading the paper as she pushes her glasses back up before they fall off of her nose.
She finishes skimming over the list as she says. "Well it says right here that you have brought together 110 couples and these numbers never lie.. In one way or another, you have helped bring people together for the better good of their lives. Making you a natural being to love and partnership. So you now have an opportunity that we are presenting to you, a promotion of sorts.. You have the one and only offer to become one of us.. That's if you accept, but you will not have another shot at this if you refuse." She declares as I feel my eyebrows touching after those words.
"One of you? But that's my problem. You have failed to mention what exactly you are," I declared, causing her to scoff and hit her forehead lightly as if to hit the thought into her head. "Oh I am sorry, I have gotten so caught up with this and the exciting news of meeting a 'natural' being that I forgot to do just that, excuse me and my excitement, my dear. Well, to put it plainly we're cupids.. Of course. Whom else brings people together with love?"
My mouth drops open once more, contemplating the words coming from her mouth. "You're cupids? All of you? And you want me to be one too?" I clarify as she nods while her shoulders shrug. "Well, you could as long as you agree to some things and dedicate your life to this new pathway." I crossed my arms feeling suspicious about how she answered that, but maybe that's just because I am new to all of this. I have the strong urge within me to ask the one question in my head at the moment. "And what if I don't want to join?" she lets out a deep breath, with sadness trailing over her features as she is shrugging her shoulders once more. She looks as if she would be sad about it, but that she can't force me into anything.
"Then you would die, like you were supposed to, and going wherever is intended for you in your afterlife.. We intercepted your death because we were hoping to gain someone with the natural ability to connect others, like you have done. Instead of people being chosen to join us and just learning our ways eventually over trial and error. It seems like an amazing addition for you and for us, since you already know the ways.. Without even trying, you have brought love to many within your life. We just think you would be a great asset, that is if you gave this a chance."
This explanation gets my mind running as my eyes continue to bounce around the room at every smiling face. They are starting to bounce as they start nodding wanting me to join them. When my eyes land back on the woman in front of me, I notice that she still looks sad, as she lets out a deep breath. "But we would never force you to stay. We only want people who want to be here to make an incredible difference on the world as we know it and for the many years to come." she says this with so much understanding that I don't feel forced at all to say yes.
"So if you said no.. We could just give you back to your body to be taken the way most are.. And wash our hands of this.. But since you wished for something more within the moment you got struck, and you have had such a big influence on many lives with love.. We figured we would give you the option to decide for yourself.. Besides I think it's all agreed on our end that you would be a great addition to our team.. But know that not everyone gets this opportunity.. It's your choice what you want to do, but don't think lightly of it.. This is something special that doesn't often happen at all and the option won't be offered to you again." She states this with a heaviness within the words, showing me how serious this really is.
I nervously glanced over at Annalee.. She is smiling and bouncing on her toes, just continuously nodding her head. "Ok.. So what would it mean if I accepted this.. Am I immortal or something? Just meandering around the world, being some kind of little matchmaker?" I ask her as she lets out a deep breath. "If you accept this you will be immortal for the most part." She says before hesitating as I instantly ask. "Most part?"
I Watched as she nods before elaborating. "Yes, you can still die again if you give up your part in being a cupid or if we take away your wings for anything that we have warned you not to do. But only then will you go back to human. You can still get hurt, but you will heal faster. That's a plus." I nod in understanding of that explanation. "Okay, but if I want to stay a cupid I will just be galvanating around the world.. Nothing of mine and only thinking of others? But at least I would still be able to be around my family though right?" I ask clarifying as she shakes her head.
"You will have to leave your family and start somewhere new because you cannot have the past holding you back or them knowing that you can't die or even what you are.. But you can just live life and introduce people as you go through the years.. You can also still live a slightly normal life, you can experience what life has to bring over the years of change and even have a place of your own, pets and lovers if you please.. But taking this life means that you will not be able to have kids though and I'm sorry about that." she declares staring over at me.
I swallow the lump within my throat as I open it to answer, but before I can she puts her hand back up again to continue. "I just want you to know what this entails, so you can make an informed decision. You will just wander where you please. We will provide you with a place to live, no matter where you go and where you see the connection.. and then you connect them.. and it's just that simple. But you have to be as discrete as you can about us and everything we do. We cannot have anyone knowing about us." She declares this with a shrug since she has probably done this many times.
I nod thinking about that and ask. "Well, what about me and my happiness? Can I pick out who I get for life?" I ask as she instantly shakes her head. "You.. don't.. get a love.. exactly.. That's the hard part about our jobs.. We won't get everlasting love, just lovers.. If you understand where I am coming from.. But let me explain, because of how we bring people together, we are always setting people up with others, even without realizing it. So the ones we have found that have given us strong feelings, they always leave us for another.. I think you can relate to that feeling already. So instead of breaking our hearts many times over, we just have fun where we want and leave it at that." She declares this sadly as I watch the other people nodding their heads.
I get sad thinking about how bad that has made me feel in the past, just to know that feeling already, and not knowing if I want that feeling for many years to come. I think she can see the question and hesitation now in my eyes. "Louise, think about this before you make a decision.. Just think of all the people we would be helping to find their true loves. Think about all the happiness and bright futures we would be insuring to so many. Think about what influence you would have, not just on this town but the world if you want it.. You wanted something bigger for yourself and your life.. and this is it." She says this with so much love intertwined around her words, making me smile.
"I do like the sound of that." I say glancing back over to Annalee as her smile grows even bigger, looking face-splitting while she continuously nods with everything I say. "Ok.. I'll accept your offer.. I'll be a cupid." I declare as they clapped once more with it turning into a standing ovation. I can't help but to smile and accept this as if it is some kind of award. I have never been treated like this, and it is fascinating, intoxicating even.
